Dulce De Leche Cheerios: Coming January 2012 To A Store Near You

First Posted: 11/30/11 10:30 AM ET Updated: 11/30/11 10:34 AM ET

We can totally get down with Honey Nut Cheerios. Apple Cinnamon Cheerios have a special place in our heart. And, of course, the original flavor is as good as ever. But when a sample box of Dulce de Leche Cheerios arrived at HuffPost Food HQ, we were a little taken aback. That's right, folks. Dulce de Leche Cheerios. It's traditional Latin American flavor meets classic American cereal. We were all excited to try it.

Unfortunately, our high expectations were dashed as soon as put Cheerios to lips. "I think these would be a great substitute for Rice Krispies Treats -- they seem better suited for a dessert than for breakfast," said one editor. Another went even further, "I am seriously disappointed in Cheerios. I hope the experience of eating these milk caramel loops have not forever ruined my love of dulce de leche." Lastly, one taster thought that these Cheerios "vaguely reminds me of a crunchy version of butterscotch-flavored fluorine at the dentist." Ouch.

Perhaps Cheerios knows that this sweet mix may be best for other uses than breakfast (Haagen Dazs had the right idea taking the ice cream route). Included in our package was a bundle of recipes including a snack mix, popcorn balls and even a cheesecake recipe.

Some props are in order though -- it's a cool, and somewhat bold move to create a flavor that isn't necessary familiar to a lot of American palates. We can applaud the move, but just wished it actually tasted like real Dulce de Leche.

Look for Dulche de Leche Cheerios on store shelves starting January 2012.

Here again, the new product of the moment seems to beg the question, do we really need more processed sugar laden foods? (Not having a box in front of me to peruse the ingredient list, I am only guessing) but caramel? When sugar was first brought to France from India in the 1600's it came under lock and key and was kept in the apothecary because of its addictive properties. The French called it "crack", no joke! Sugar is everywhere and in everything because it's so addictive. I shake my head, and think what is happening? As a nation our health continues to decline, including the health of our children. And, the sugar addiction continues; when is enough, enough? Cathy Silver

Wallaby has a delicious dulce de leche yogurt. Flavor sounds gross in cereal, though. I prefer plain Cheerios with rice beverage and a tad of sugar, though I'm warming up to the apple cinnamon. I was a huge Apple Jacks fan as a kid.

The folks at General Mills should have paid attention to Girl Scout Cookies. They introduced this flavor of cookie about two years ago and the girls can't give them away. The flavor is way too sweet, even for a cookie. The beauty of chocolate is its inherent bitterness. The Cheerio flavor I miss is the one with freeze dried fruit in the cereal. The strawberries were good.

Somebody please give the AOL twits a dictionary. The teaser to this article describes the new flavor as 'delectable', and the article does nothing but criticize the flavor of the cereal.

Cheerios should just stick to making the original Cheerios, and the Honey Nut.

YUCK!!! I have a real problem with flavored Cheerios. They are way too sweet and take away the goodness of the taste. All they do is coat the regular Cheerio and make it flavored. Not good in my opinion.

Let them market it in Mexico and Latin American countries..... If we closed our borders we would not
have enough of them here to bother marketing this product in United States of America.

Caramel Cheerios and Halloween candy, both are junk food for breakfast.

Try Wallaby's dulce de leche yogurt, if it's available in your area. Yummy, and probably especially so if you like the flavor already.
