14-Year-Old Girl Pepper Sprays Classmates At Harlem's Academy For Social Action, 9 Sent To Hospital

A 14-year old girl pepper-sprayed her classmates at a Harlem high school Tuesday, sending 9 students to the hospital.

Education officials are investigating the incident which occurred at 2:30PM at The Academy For Social Action on West 129th Street (you may remember the C-rated academy for a Principal/Assistant Principal sex scandal last year). One student told The New York Post that the girl sprayed the irritant indiscriminately into the air.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 2:40 PM with a hazmat unit to evaluate 11 students. 9 ended up being transported to St. Luke's-Roosevelt hospital and were treated for minor injuries.

Police at the scene issued the girl a summons (although, as New York Magazine notes, "We're pretty sure she was just imitating something she saw them do on TV").

Self-defense sprays have peppered news headlines across the country recently--from the questionable use of sprays during Occupy Wall Street protests in New York and demonstrations at UC Davis in California, to a Wal-Mart shopper caught up in Black Friday mayhem.

And just earlier this month, 17 students in the Bronx were sent to the hospital after an assailant entered their school and discharged pepper spray.

Democracy Now interviewed one of the creators of pepper-spray, Kamran Loghman, about its recent widespread use, namely by police. "The use was just absolutely out of the ordinary and it was not in accordance with any training or policy of any department that I know of," he said. "I personally certified 4,000 police officers in the early '80s and '90s and I have never seen this before. That's why I was shocked... I feel is my civic duty to explain to the public that this is not what pepper spray was developed for."

Maybe the GOP will deem it a vegetable, so it will be mandated at school lunch. Tastes good on pizza - hey, that's two vegetables right there!

Did anyone tell her that black Friday is over? No more super deals worth spraying for. Save the spray for next year. Ugh. Waste of good spray.

And everyone wonders why there are armed guards inside the NYC public schools.

The incident in the Bronx was the mother of a knocked up student. Now you know where these kids in the NYC public school system get their manners from.

Ah, lighten up! According to some, what she did was no worse than flinging a vegetable--say, like, PIZZA--at them..I mean, pepper spray is pretty much a FOOD product, right?

Or maybe this kid has misguided aspirations of being a cop. I'm sure she will be patted on the back by law enforcement...

She must have been watching FOX Megyn Kelly telling the people it's only veggie juice : ) These are the consequences when the COP's are using military grade toxins irresponsibly, then you have fascists making joke about it !

This is another act of bullying. She felt so scared that she needed to spray the pepper spray OR she was the bully herself. Either way, she's troubled, and its moments like this that you realize how far bullying is being taken.

Apparently pepper spray was meant for police spraying it directly into the eyes of non-violent, peaceful protesters as a form of torture in retribution for displaying civil disobedience in California.

Where is she getting these ideas from, eh? I can't help but wonder.

Must be video games!

My husband was in law enforcement and says the mace or pepper spray is to be sprayed on an attacker's chest so the fumes rise and impair the person momentarily. Not to be sprayed on directly on the face!

What I saw was direct spraying in the face, not just a spritz.
