Dog Shoots Man: Brigham City Man Recovering From Gunshot Wound Caused By Pet

Dog Shoots Man

First Posted: 11/30/11 07:40 PM ET Updated: 12/14/11 04:38 PM ET

With a best friend like this, who needs enemies?

A Utah hunter is recovering from a birdshot wound in his buttocks caused when his dog stepped on his shotgun on Sunday, The Desert News reports.

The unnamed man from Brigham City was duck hunting with a buddy at the Great Salt Lake. He laid his 12-gauge shotgun on a boat's bow when he got out of the craft, according to the paper. His dog jumped on the bow, causing the weapon to discharge a burst of fire that punctured the man's posterior.

The hapless hunter was setting up decoys in the water when the mishap occurred, TV station KTVX says.

Doctors at a nearby hospital dislodged 27 pellets from the 46-year-old man's buttocks, according to the Associated Press.

Box Elder County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Potter told the AP that the man stood about 10 feet from his hound when he got hit and said he wasn't seriously injured perhaps because he wore waders. He didn't know what breed of dog shot its master, The Desert News said.

The accident recalled the infamous 2006 misfire by then-Vice President Dick Cheney who unloaded birdshot into a campaign donor's face while quail hunting on a friend's Texas ranch. The wounds sent Harry Whittington to an intensive care unit.

If I have to live around people who believe guns are the perfect gift for kids from Santa Claus, or graduation gifts, or as rewards for being born, passing gas, or blinking, it would be nice if I could trust you have the safety engaged or have it unloaded when you aren't having sex with them. Wait a minute, That's not totally fair. I would like to trust that you have the safety engaged when you're not shooting them.

I don't care if this guy was "just" a hunter, or if he "only" put the gun down for a brief moment, the safety wasn't engaged. THAT'S what makes those of us who believe society can cope just fine without a gun a very three feet. There's no such thing as a safe gun owner unless the gun is in the gun owner's hand at all times.

I have gun owners as friends and in my family, but I know 100% that if they set their gun down just long enough to use both hands to climb our of the boat, THEY HAVE THE SAFETY ON or they have unloaded it. This guy is very lucky the dog only peppered his rump. He could have been blinded, paralyzed, or killed.

Call me a liberal anti-second amendment hippie who wants to take your toys away, I don't care. Tell me that the story was about a hunting gun, and hunting guns aren't really the guns in contention when talking about gun rights. It doesn't matter. This was a gun that was not in the hunter's care and control and it was not made safe. That's irresponsible.

There is nothing humorous about reckless gun handling. Even if they are "just regular" hunting guns. I am wound very tightly about gun issues. I don't mind appearing like a lunatic. Look, I live in Texas where it is perfectly fine with prosecutors, grand juries, and police organizations for someone to chase a person down the road shooting at him the entire time because the guy was trying to break into his garage; shooting the person in the back killing him. It's acceptable to shoot and kill someone simply walking across your lawn. You can shoot and kill someone you believe was trying to break into your neighbor's home while he's on vacation when the only thing occurring was a couple teenagers who mistook the home for the home a friend.

I live in a state where you can shoot and kill someone even though you, your property, or your family are no longer in immediate danger. So yes, I am militantly reactive against gun ownership and equally so when the person was simply reckless with his hunting gun. This man could have killed himself or someone else by being reckless. You have to be just as careful with hunting guns even though they are not the type of guns usually at the center of the gun debate.

skokeedaclown, I will try this one more time. A so-called responsible gun owner and hunter, placed his gun down. At that moment, the gun was not in his care and control. That's a HUGE contract violation promised by gun owners. When your gun is not in your hands, thereby OUTSIDE of your care and and control, it MUST ALWAYS have the safety engaged, or the gun needs to be MADE SAFE. IF this accident had killed him, would it matter that he only put the gun down for "a brief second" to crawl out of the boat?

That's why none of his story was funny. Maybe someone else could help me describe the probablem better. My guns are ALWAYS is a safe mode. I either put the safety on, drop the clip, or leave my shotgun opened at the breach. EVEN IF I NEED TO PUT IT DOWN TO GRAB A KLEENEX SO I CAN SNEEZE. My rule is this: "Not in my hand, NOT FIREABLE"  Full stop. Period. The End!!
