Flying Squirrel Invades New Jersey Emergency Room

RAHWAY, N.J. -- Firefighters were needed stat after a flying squirrel went nuts in a New Jersey hospital's emergency room.

The squirrel kept launching itself from an 8-foot-high wall-mounted lamp into a glass wall after becoming trapped in a trauma room at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway Tuesday night.

A pair of firefighters threw a blanket over the squirrel and released it into a wooded area outside the hospital.

Padavano believes there may be a nest in the building because it's the second time in two weeks that a flying squirrel got in the ER.

I was glad to hear that the squirrel was released unharmed back into the wooded area outside the hospital. That poor squirrel was obviously very scared and the firefighters did the right thing by
throwing a blanket over it to calm the squirrel down and to avoid possibly being hurt by the squirrel's teeth
or claws. They did a very good deed by releasing the squirrel back into nature.

It's unfortunate that the squirrel was so stressed, but at least they handled him safely. I imagine the patients in the emergency room got some unexpected entertainment from it all. I think they should try to find the nest and take it to a wildlife rehab facility, especially if the squirrel was a mother and there might be babies left behind who need to be cared for. Then they might consider doing a check and seeing if there is some problem with a hole in the building or something that caused the nest to be built there and board it up so no other squirrels have problems.
