Kevin Hogan, High School English Teacher And Alleged Gay Porn Star, Scandal Sparks Mixed Reactions

First Posted: 11/30/11 04:20 PM ET Updated: 12/01/11 01:30 AM ET

Controversy over the alleged gay porn past of a Massachusetts-based high school English teacher continues to swirl, with support split between the employee and the reporter who broke the story.

As The Boston Globe is reporting, Kevin Hogan, who was hired in August to head the English department at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, was placed on administrative leave after Fox News broke the news yesterday that he had acted under the pseudonym "Hytch Cawke" in X-rated movies like "Fetish World" and "Just Gone Gay 8," which were released in 2010.

When confronted with the accusations by Fox Undercover reporter Mike Beaudet, Hogan -- who also served as the school's crew coach -- only responded, “I don’t know what you’re talking about."

The school's business manager responded quickly to the reports with a swift e-mail to students' parents saying Hogan's references had been "superlative" at the time of his hiring, yet opinions on the controversy have been surprisingly mixed. A poll on the Fox News site finds a staggering majority (81 percent) of readers believe Hogan should be allowed to keep his job, compared with a mere 18 percent who feel he should be fired.

Beaudet has taken to his Twitter account in response:

Mike Beaudet
Lots of reaction to our story. Don't agree with all of it, but appreciate the feedback. Working on update for tonight. See you at 6.

Meanwhile, a Facebook page, "Support Kevin Hogan, FIRE Mike Beaudet," already had just over 250 users at the time of this report. "There is no allegation that Kevin Hogan's conduct in his job was other than exemplary," wrote one user. "In fact, this is thinly-disguised sexual orientation discrimination."

It's been a tough year for gay porn stars overall. In August, Florida’s Miami-Dade school district fired substitute teacher Shawn Loftis when it was revealed he act acted in gay porn under the name Collin O'Neal. Earlier today, it was reported that the Executive Director of the Southern California Scholarship Association -- a nonprofit that produces the Miss Hollywood pageant, an official preliminary to Miss California and Miss America -- resigned after it was revealed his partner, Ric Alonso, was a porn star and producer who operated three X-rated websites for gay men.

Kevin Hogan, a private sector employee, can be fired for any reason - including political beliefs expressed outside of the workplace - except those explicitly protected by state law. Were he a public employee, it would be illegal to fire or suspend Hogan due to 1st Amendment protections and because he ***hasn't broken any laws***.

Nobody should be able to be fired for engaging in LEGAL behavior outside of the workplace. Other countries laws' require "just cause" for all dismissals. To suggest that Hogan, a beloved teacher, will improperly influence his students because he has acted in a few porn films with adults in the past is ludicrous.

This is all an attempt to draw gay activity into the cognitive web the masses have been fed re: the Penn State scandal. Homosexuality has nothing to do with pedophilia: the two are unrelated. The $16.1 Trillion secret loans of the Federal Reserve (from 01/01/07 - 06/21/10) are far more scandalous, but have received scant attention. The technique of the conservatives is to reignite irrational biases in the minds of the masses against minority groups, like homosexuals, to accomplish two Fascist goals:
1. DIVERT ATTENTION away from the real forces behind hardship and social decay: corporate oligopoly, free trade agreements, criminal banking syndicates.
2. Pave the way for CENSORSHIP LAWS in the name of child safety that will eventually be used to suppress unrelated political speech that challenges the oligopoly's interests (e.g. Australia's banned website list).

FOX news is trying to make this a gay issue. oh my god look its a gay guy who was a porn star who is gonna influence our kids. this guy could be a great teacher for all we know.

Get real--it isn't the reporter who turned this into a "gay issue." Any rational discussion of the story has been hijacked by people trying to turn it into a gay issue. There are plenty of gay teachers--that is not an issue. How does the questioning of a teacher who has one foot in the hardcore porn world indicate an intolerance for homosexuals--as if porn and being gay go hand and hand. The story is about his porn career.

This is Fox we are talking about. A conservative network. They love to associate gay and lesbians with immorality. And the fact that Hogan worked in the porn industry and is gay is what fox likes because they want to make those kind of connections about gay people to their conservative viewers.

A lot of people have pasts that they may or may not be proud of. All indications point to this guy being a fine teacher and that should be the most important factor of all.

I'm not defending his porn past, simply illustrating that it's just that the past and it may be time to simply let this guy live his life and continue to teach like he apparently does quite well.
09:24 PM on 12/05/2011
What's there to defend? He did nothing wrong. It's a non-issue, or at least it should be.
10:49 AM on 12/05/2011
Just an FYI for those of you pontificating on a situation about which you know very little: Kevin Hogan isn't gay. He is married to a woman, and his porn flick resume is far from limited to the films featured in the news report. He has made both gay and straight porn films. There is more to this story. I'm just getting sick of this being turned into a gay issue. In Greater Boston a gay teacher is a non-issue. It's about his side career and whether or not it conflicts with his role as high school teacher.
06:50 PM on 12/05/2011
Well I think that is exactly what is upsetting people, I think, that this has been turned into a gay issue. Would it have been such groundbreaking news if it was just straight porn? If he has done plenty of straight porn too why was that never mentioned? Probably because Fox assumed gay porn was more shocking.
01:48 AM on 12/06/2011
Any discussion of this matter has been totally hijacked by people who want to turn it into something it isn't. I've seen the actual story and it doesn't even mention anything about it being "gay porn," except that the word gay happens to be in one of the titles. (It's only in the subsequent discussions of the story that the term "gay porn" has been used over and over.) And for that matter, how does the questioning of a teacher who has one foot in the hardcore porn world indicate an intolerance for homosexuals--as if porn and being gay go hand and hand, like it's all one issue As a gay person this kind of grouping by critics is what offends me.

Really people? Ambushed? lol As a gay man my self, this guy is FULLY RESPONSIBLE for what happens to himself!! I would not want this guy doing porn and teaching my kids or any others! He didn't not have to do it, and choose to, and got caught!! Stop your victim agenda on everyone and take responsibility for your actions!

I just e-mailed Fox news in Boston to share my disgust at how Mr. Hogan was ambushed by Mike Beaudet. That was absolutely wrong and Fox and Beaudet should be ashamed of themselves.

I'm not clear how long he's been teaching or when these videos were made, but IMHO it shows poor judgement on his part given his profession. If he had another profession that didn't involve kids I wouldn't be saying this. It's all about his job.

Mr. Hogan sounds like a great teacher but I would have definite reservations about him teaching my kids. I wouldn't want any porn star, gay or straight, teaching my kids. I want them to be taught by people with no shocking skeletons in their closet so they're not having to deal with understanding adult actions, morality or sexuality at an age when they should be worrying about homework, chores and and the upcoming dance. There is plenty of time for them to live with the fact that the world is a complicated place, as we adults all know.

If this was a private home video, that's one thing, but it's not private when he answers an ad and films it with knowledge that it could be distributed. He has been naive if he thought this wouldn't get out at some point.

I feel for him because by all accounts he's a great teacher, but a porn past will not serve him well in an environment where he's working with kids.

Well if this is true or not, it should have nothing what so ever to do if he can teach or not. If it is true, the school should keep him as it could help students who are being bullied because of sexual orientations. High school can be a pretty tough place for young people who are struggling within.

It just should have nothing what so ever to do with teaching. Its right wing evangelical closeted biggots you have to watchout for.

I know, it's scary and frustrating.

I fail to see the problem. Porn is not illegal. He did not have sex on school grounds or with a student. As far as I can tell it sounds like he is a great teacher and the kids like him. A persons life outside of work, as long as it is not harming anyone, shouldn't matter.

First, I'm appalled at how this poor guy was treated and I've already sent a note to Fox about it, signed online petitions in support of Mr. Hogan, etc. However, I do have reservations about a former porn star of any kind teaching my kids. My ONLY problem with it is that now that it has become public, as these things usually do, the kids are forced to deal with an adult situation when I'd rather they were worrying about kid stuff. There is no problem with a great teacher doing a great job until something like this comes out and forces an adult situation on his students. I recall seeing some nasty stuff online once as an adult and it really freaked me out. What does it do to an impressionable teen to see a picture of his teacher smiling over a guy who is covered in clothespins? In my opinion, he just shouldn't have to understand that at a young age.

I know that someone is going to think that I'm biased and close minded but I'm really not. I'm just a mother of an 8 year old who is already asking me some shocking questions and I just want him to deal with age-appropriate issues rather than things like this.
06:40 PM on 12/05/2011
I agree. I think what makes me angry about this is that Kevin was trying to behave responsibly given the circumstances and keep the whole thing from reaching any of the kids he was teaching. Beaudet was the one who brought it out into the spotlight, and made it an adult issue that the kids now have to face. If it wasn't for Beaudet, I really doubt that anyone at the school would have ever known.

Bring the teacher back and fire the dimwitted reporter, who fails to engage in journalism, but "ambush reporting".

Bill O'Reilly hates to be ambushed, yet it is his calling card.....for others.

Fox serves no purpose on this planet but to create hatred, disinformation, and divide our Nation.

Not one single reason to ever ever watch them. Their numbers are high, but the demographics, those 18-49, those who buy products, do not watch them in large numbers.

Fixed income folks who have nothing better to do, that rail at the Government while cashing their Government checks represent many of the viewers.

Fox has not a clue about actual journalism, as this kind of a story and how it was obtained, shows.
03:10 PM on 12/02/2011
How is 80/20 in favor of the teacher a "mixed" reaction? On Fox's own site no less. In an election we'd call it a landslide. Here it's a firm rebuke.

Fox News asserted in a Florida appeals court in 2003 that it was under no legal obligation to report the news factually and that it was free to falsify and distort the news as it saw fit. On February 14, 2003 the Florida Second District Court of Appeals unanimously agreed that there was no law preventing it from doing so.

Why does Fox news still have any credibility?

Hogans integrity as an educator is in no way linked to his partaking pornographic films. They were not filmed during his time at the institution nor did he share that content with the students. Furthermore, these students are underage and presumably would not have been faced with this information, had the ever so honorable FOX news not violated this mans personal privacy.
This news affiliate should be ashamed of itself, it is FOX and the reporter Mike Beaudet that have sexually assaulted the community and these students. Disgusting.
