Michele Bachmann: U.S. Embassy In Iran (Which Doesn't Exist) Would Be Closed Under My Watch

First Posted: 11/30/2011 5:29 pm Updated: 12/01/2011 7:07 am

Michele Bachmann told supporters in Iowa on Wednesday of her lofty plans for American diplomacy, claiming that a Bachmann presidency would mean no U.S. embassy in Iran.

Considering the recent hostility in the Iranian capital of Tehran against the British embassy, the comment might not seem particularly out of place -- if not for the fact that the U.S. hasn't actually had a functioning embassy in Iran since 1980.

NBC's Jamie Novgorod first pointed out the flop in a tweet earlier Wednesday:

James Novogrod
Bachmann tells Waverly IA crowd that were she president, "we wouldn't have an American embassy in Iran." The US broke ties w Iran in 1980.

The Washington Post reported recently on the latest flare-up in Tehran and on the fallout from the infamous Iran hostage crisis in 1979:

Shortly after the Nov. 4 [1979] embassy takeover, the Iranian revolutionary leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, endorsed the militants, and the Bazargan government resigned. U.S. diplomatic relations with Iran were formally severed in April 1980 and have never been restored.

Bachmann has been an outspoken critic of Iran over the past few weeks. Earlier this month she urged the Pentagon to "prepare a war plan" in case of it acquiring a nuclear weapon. She later alleged that the Middle Eastern nation had threatened to launch nuclear warheads at the U.S. and Israel. PolitiFact deemed that claim "False."

On Tuesday, she told Glenn Beck that the U.S. was facing a "new axis of evil," composed of Iran, Syria, North Korea, China and Russia.

Bachmann, go home. You have already pulled out of the race. Don't bash Obama on foreign policies. At least he knows we don't have an embassy in Iran. GOP never aknowledge any thing good done by the President. Hear this - We are out of Iraq, Osama Bin Laden is dead (Bush couldn't do it in 7 years), No more "don't ask don't tell" plocity in the military - should I go on?, GOP are going to lose in 2012. Why, they are bunch of morons especially McConnell and Boehner. Always bashing the President. Mr. Obama, you have my vote.

When and where was Ms. Bachmann when she said "U.S. Embassy In Iran (Which Doesn't Exist) Would Be Closed Under My Watch?" I'm not convinced that isn't a fraudulent headline. James Novogrod quoted her as saying "we wouldn't have an American embassy in Iran." That's a far cry from saying that she would close the embassy.

Am I the only one who believes that her comments are right? I don't see how saying that, if she were president, she wouldn't have an embassy in Tehran means that she believes there is one.

Wow at least know something exists or doesn't exist before you open your mouth to the media. I guess Michele Bachmann is so busy pouring watering for all the men that she doesn't have time to read the news or goggle it. Sweet Bees this woman is on another planet.

People who would mock Michele Bachmann's foreign policy credentials should remember that she is the only candidate from a state that has to deal with the everyday menace of Canada. They're infiltrating our airwaves (Canadian character on "How I Met Your Mother") and playing hockey in weird places like Montreal and Ottowa ad Winnipeg and not traditional hockey places like San Jose and Dallas and Tampa Bay. I'm asking Michele to draw up a Canada Plan to deal with these maple-leafed monsters.

Old-time Scandinavian joke, best told in a Svedish accent: I don't like it here in the United States. I'm going home to Minnesota.

Bachmann is on the Intelligence Commitee? Really. Isn't that IRONIC? (the true definition considering what that commitee is and what that word means)

"Thankyou congresswoman Bachmann". "It's a bold proposal but we''ll take it under consideration" "Mr chairman is there anymore pressing business before we brake for lunch?"

Yes; in fact there is. We need to make sure China doesn't develop nuclear weapons.

I was a 15-16 year old girl during that time. In other words, a whole lot more interested in boys than politics. And even I knew/know that we have NOT had diplomatic relations with Iran since then. My gosh, where WAS Bachmann?

Patrolling the border like a real American?
06:41 PM on 12/03/2011
Ok I am an AMERICAN that works in the MIDDLE EAST......Iraq to be exact. Michelle Bachman is a WAR LORD FUNDED corporations and hate. The CRUSADER. I really would like for Americans to know that these are the people that will take us down. Foreighn aid is necessary for the people to know we care and we are not the enemy. I think that as and American I would rather extend my arm to help someone up rather than to shoot him while he is down. Iran is not going to bomb Isreal. That would be stupid. Like most politicians and media.........they lie about the facts with good make up and great hair. They dangle the jewels and make you think bad bad bad and kill kill kill.......Wake up. I have to go to dinner now........but this lady is a deadly pawn for defense. This lady will kill more Americans without any remorse because of money. Dont be dumb. PLEASE VOTE FOR MITT ROMNEY!!!! I have to go to dinner now.

Why not Ron Paul? He is more likely to not lead us into war than Mitt Romney.
