Study Explores Distrust Of Atheists By Believers

Believers Distrust Atheists

First Posted: 11/30/2011 11:06 am Updated: 11/30/2011 1:47 pm

Distrust is the central motivating factor behind why religious people dislike atheists, according to a new study led by University of British Columbia psychologists. (Read the full study.)

“Where there are religious majorities -– that is, in most of the world –- atheists are among the least trusted people,” says lead author Will Gervais, a doctoral student in UBC’s Dept. of Psychology. “With more than half a billion atheists worldwide, this prejudice has the potential to affect a substantial number of people.”

While reasons behind antagonism toward atheists have not been fully explored, the study –- published in the current online issue of Journal of Personality and Social Psychology -– is among the first explorations of the social psychological processes underlying anti-atheist sentiments.

“This antipathy is striking, as atheists are not a coherent, visible or powerful social group,” says Gervais, who co-authored the study with UBC Associate Prof. Ara Norenzayan and Azim Shariff of the University of Oregon. The study is titled, "Do You Believe in Atheists? Distrust is Central to Anti-Atheist Prejudice."

The researchers conducted a series of six studies with 350 American adults and nearly 420 university students in Canada, posing a number of hypothetical questions and scenarios to the groups. In one study, participants found a description of an untrustworthy person to be more representative of atheists than of Christians, Muslims, gay men, feminists or Jewish people. Only rapists were distrusted to a comparable degree.

The researchers concluded that religious believer’s distrust –- rather than dislike or disgust –- was the central motivator of prejudice against atheists, adding that these studies offer important clues on how to combat this prejudice.

One motivation for the research was a Gallup poll that found that only 45 percent of American respondents would vote for a qualified atheist president, says Norenzayan. The figure was the lowest among several hypothetical minority candidates. Poll respondents rated atheists as the group that least agrees with their vision of America, and that they would most disapprove of their children marrying.

The religious behaviors of others may provide believers with important social cues, the researchers say. “Outward displays of belief in God may be viewed as a proxy for trustworthiness, particularly by religious believers who think that people behave better if they feel that God is watching them,” says Norenzayan. “While atheists may see their disbelief as a private matter on a metaphysical issue, believers may consider atheists’ absence of belief as a public threat to cooperation and honesty.”

If they think you must believe in God in order to be honest then these are clearly people who would be dishonest if it wasn't for "God". And you can't trust them. They could easily rationalize it as "in this case God tells me to".

none of this changes the fact that whenever i sum up the courage to end a line of questioning from a friend with, "because I don't believe that" there's suddenly a split second glare as if I've somehow been cast out as a member of the human species.... which is why I'll never bother the status quo; when my family prays, i just close my eyes, grab a hand, and play along. When in Rome... It'd be nice though, some day... in the not too distant fantasy future (one can believe, no?) that I'd be known and loved for who I am - not who I pretend to be.

Hey they thought the world was flat too....takes them a while. When they realize that Atheists live full and happy lives without God(s), and the scary things their preachers tell them aren't true... they'll come around.

It's hard to make an argument against religion with out mocking to some extent. Think of the comments from "rational" people if i was to say i believe in the easter bunny for example. I believe a 6' tall Bunny hides chocolate's & eggs around my yard and house once a year. Is anything in any religion that far of a stretch from that? I think not. I'm not mocking any religion with this comparison, but i'm sure if you are a believer, my comparison is an insult and I apologize. Whether it be blue Hindu gods, Jesus the original Zombie, Noah's Arc full of animals (that at some point have to eat each other), a certain Muslim figure that cant be depicted in cartoons. I could go on all day. Any of these belief's can be considered laughable (and again, I apologize).

And they wonder why we atheists have our guard up. Perhaps we should be the ones distrusting of those who need a mythic being to keep them in line.
Nothing about this surprises me. The wrath I and friends who are atheists get are a constant in-the-face reminder.
If most atheists are like me they don't choose not to believe, they simply couldn't force themselves to if they tried. I will not be disingenuous just to be socially acceptable to the majority.

I would just like to thank the Huffington Post for including a link to the actual full study in their article - too often, the public is exposed to summaries of studies within media reports that are skewed and incorrect in conclusion with nothing else to reference. As a trained researcher in the psychological field, I am grateful that the author of this article provided both citations as well as the article itself so that the general public might refer to it directly and examine both its validity and reliability themselves.

i don't even bother telling most people i'm an athiest because it's always met with some sort of "you're going to hell" comment. why would i want to devote my entire life to a diety that may or may not exist, with no proof either way? i don't need a book to tell me not to kill people or steal. that should be common sense. in my opinion, religeous beliefs stem from most people's inability to cope with their own mortality. we are born, we die. we don't know what happens after that. and that terrifies people because it's something we can't change or control.

Here is an example of myth-mongering by religious people who have prejudices and make up fiction for their own comfort. What can we do about these types of prejudices?

My post is the first in quotes: “"We are the most social highly intelligent creature on the planet. Our brains are social perception machines. We are built to be highly sensitive to each other and to our "group". "

Dar Sandberg's reply post: "Something that atheism teaches its believers to violate. But your statement reveals the heart of why some people, at least, are atheists - to feel superior, to be their own gods and goddesses. And to do so, atheism denigrates every other human on the planet.”

believers of all faiths are partners in denial. they do not agree with each other on the details, but they agree that a supernatural mythological fantasy could be true. They have more in common with each other than they do with atheists who reject all of these myths based on a complete and total 100% lack of evidence.

If you claim to know that there is a "100% lack of evidence" of God, then you are claiming to be omniscient.

By the definition of god, there can be no evidence. That is why "faith" is necessary.

Within a religion, there is usually a base of morals and codes in which its believers live by. What morals and codes do Atheists study and/or go by? I think that's where the biggest distrust comes from; morality. I, myself, am Christian and am not ashamed to say so, just as Muslims, Jews, and Atheists. In what I've come to believe, it isn't my place to judge, so why should I place judgement on someone simply because they state who they are? More people of all faiths (and non-faiths) should gain this knowledge. I will be just as fine with an Atheist individual as I would be with any other individual of faith or beliefs. Because f my beliefs in Christianity, I've realized these things, therefore I feel the presence of my God and my Religion is real. As long as said individual of separate beliefs, or lack thereof, respects me and my beliefs, then I will respect theirs. If they don't, so be it, I'll walk away from the argument because neither of us would understanding of each other anyway, so further argument would be just unaccounted nuisance and a waste of time that could be spent in better ways. Well, there's my point of view on that subject then ^_^

"Within a religion, there is usually a base of morals and codes in which its believers live by. What morals and codes do Atheists study and/or go by?"

Because moral codes come from ourselves, not from a divine source handed down in a book. Human morality informed the religious bases, not the other way around.

Those with supernatural religious beliefs regardless of how divergent enable each other. Atheists dismantle their beliefs with science and logic. In other words devout muslims and devout christians and devout jews actually are allies against science and logic. There is safety in their numbers, but no mistake the orthodoxy is eroding and this makes them angry with atheists.
03:53 PM on 12/09/2011
Science and logic grow daily as more and more discoveries are made within the realm of truth. It is faith that is the synapse between science and truth.

Yes well in fact all "believers" are in fact non-believers when it comes to other religions. Athiests merely take that to the logical conclusion that all religious beliefs are are false. When someone disagrees with you or points out that you are wrong, often times you get angry! especially when you so obviously are!

pretty much the case... except of the 90% there is a large number that is intimidated into saying that they believe
03:59 PM on 12/09/2011
A good analogy here is the story of the blind men and the elephant. Each has a piece of knowledge regarding the animal. If, in arrogance, they disregard their blindness and say they have all truth regarding that one piece of the elephant, that truth actually becomes a lie. We all have a form of blindness (atheists, muslims, christians, jews, etc.) that SHOULD drive us to the humility of being open to hear other 'pieces of the puzzle.'

I cannot prove that there either is or is not a God, and no one else can, either. Some people have faith that there is a God, and others have a belief that there is none. Who can tell?

I don't even think it's an important question. I used to not identify as an atheist because lacking belief in deities didn't seem significant enough to label myself over. There are lots of things I lack a specific belief in. I do now, because of things like this study. I've helped friends see that atheists are as moral and happy as anyone else.

thanks Emma, In some ways though we are outcast and hostage to religious powers. An example would be the dearth of open atheists in congress. Is it because there are none? Or is it because the become unelectable if they declare themselves so? This is a form of DADT that we live with and there are many other examples.

Yes! a christian and an atheist can agree that Islam is false. A muslim and an Atheist can agree that christianity is a myth. A mormon and an atheist can agree that Hinduism is a cult! See we agree with everyone!
