'Weed Wars': New Reality TV Show Explores Oakland Medical Marijuana Dispensary

WASHINGTON -- The largest medical marijuana dispensary on the West Coast has opened its doors to a reality television close-up.

The show, "Weed Wars," debuts Thursday on the Discovery Channel. The four-part series will take a closer look at Harborside Health Center in Oakland, Calif., where a spirited cast of characters -- including Steve DeAngelo, the center's pigtailed co-founder and executive director -- will offer viewers an inside look at the considerable struggles and day-to-day routines of operating the dispensary.

"What 'Weed Wars' is really, is a window," DeAngelo said. "We're opening up on our world. Viewers will have the opportunity to meet myself, my family, our staff, our patients, our growers, and really get a look into our lives. There's nothing contrived about it. Nobody's taken out of their usual routine and put into extreme circumstances to see how they'll react. It is really a reality, reality TV show."

One episode focuses on a staff member whose mother is not terribly happy about her son's decision to go to work in the medical cannabis industry. Another explores the finer points of the center's tax-bill fights. But the absence of sexier media material, like say, screaming matches or torrid affairs, is not a coincidence.

"A lot of people approached my brother about reality TV shows," said Steve's brother Andrew DeAngelo. "About 10 different producers, and it took us a long time to find one that we trusted and that we believed would tell our story in a fair way that we wanted it to be told and wasn't going to spin it in a 'Jersey Shore' kind of direction."

The show comes as federal prosecutors are launching an attack on medical marijuana shop owners, shuttering multiple state-licensed marijuana dispensaries that have heretofore been taxed and regulated by local government. Last month, Harborside lost a high-stakes battle with the Internal Revenue Service, which ruled in conjunction with the crackdown that pot clinics cannot deduct operating expenses from their tax returns. Harborside was informed it owed $2.5 million in taxes, a full $2 million more than the 83,000-member dispensary actually paid.

The brothers acknowledged they could not have known the show's debut would coincide with the federal government's ramped up enforcement.

"When we agreed to do this show a year ago," Steve DeAngelo said, "we didn't know that the federal government was going to decide to reverse their policy on medical cannabis. And at that time the federal policy was that if you were in compliance with the law, then you would be not subject to federal prosecution. Now, a year later, we're living in a much different world."

While the current political climate will undoubtedly pique viewers' interest, there are of course significant risks associated with the show.

"We are very concerned about what's going to happen when the federal government sees the show," Steve DeAngelo said. "We hope that our honesty in showing who we are doesn't turn into a liability."

While it's certainly not the first marijuana-themed reality TV show, and not even the first to feature a Bay Area dispensary, the brothers said they hope viewers will use the opportunity to take a serious look at drug policy in America.

"There's so much stigma and misconception and stereotypes about medical cannabis people," said Andrew DeAngelo. "'Weed Wars' is gonna blow the lid off of all of that."

Although I agree it doesn't help the movement to display their consumption and then go on to fail at their respective tasks, from getting to their destination on time to making their case before the board, but that's not on the cannabis. They were just unprofessional and incompetent. The guy who represented the company to the board was clueless and unprepared, difficult to watch to the point that when he went at that bong, I felt a little ill.

To the poster who spoke of the $20 million gross as testament to their business prowess, I'm just guessing but I imagine one of the first shops to legally sell cannabis in the Oakland area wouldn't need a crack team of account executives from a top advertising agency, creating ad campaigns to succeed. The product sort of sells itself. No denying their stellar numbers, but George McFly's performance before the board and the fact that they were so blindsided by the tax hit seems a stronger barometer of their business acumen or lack thereof.

Too bad. I like that DeAngelo goes on O'Reilly to set that propagandist straight and done right, this show could have been an effective tool for spreading the truth about cannabis. Instead, it's likely to only make him and his crew famous for publicly setting the movement back by years.

Why do I keep hearing the theme music to the "The Jersey Shore"?

The show just sheds light on how unprofessional harborside staff is. The owner should not show himself or his staff smoking weed on camera. During their tax feud with the state the owner smoked weed and his brother ran into the vault to pop some thc pills because of stress and it looked as though they were using it as a crutch instead of for medical reasons. This looks very bad and people can easily get the wrong idea from viewing their behavior. This show could cause other states and biased voters to reconsider supporting legalization because it glamorizes the medical marijuana industry and exzamplifies improper usage. Harborside can be a positive example for the medical marijuana industry if they take responsibility for what they do while on camera and how they represent their business.

this is the "crux of the buiscit" persay....not to quote frank zappa or anthing, but harborside is putting a bad light on the medical mariquana movement as a whole, and the damage being done by their unprofessional behavior during the taping of this "reality show" will only be seen when new states try to legalize for medical purposes
Anybody who advocates Medical Mariquana Laws should do whatever it takes to have this show pulled from broadcast television asap. or the Movement as a Whole may be damaged beyond repair. Leading to states reversing their decisions on Med Mariquana, and no further expansion of the med mariquana movement into new states, whose many sick people will have no choices left but illegal means to get mariquana to ease their various ailments, if they chose that route to medicate.

So if anyone else in the world is feeling a bit stressed, ( a surprise 1.1 Mil tax bill would be stressful to any business owner ) and he takes a drink or smokes a cigarette, downs any
one of the many prescription medications available, eats a quart of ice cream, or goes on a
shopping binge etc. etc., that would be acceptable and 'normal', but if he takes a toke there's
something weak or at least, problematic with his behavior ?? Please remove your head from
the dark place that it resides... These guys are the American Dream, they saw a need and
put their butts on the line to follow the rules governing every other business and have been
very successful. If they were selling liquor or tobacco they would be lauded.as successful
citizens. The vested interests, prisons for profit, police who profit from seizures, Brewers,
Distillers, textile producers, ethanol producers etc. etc. witness their success and use their
influence to have your people (corporate) friendly govt. crack down on the threat by making them play by another set of rules. This is less about ganja, and all about who determines
what your 'freedoms' are, not based on reality, or morality, but simply about power and money.

i would say i agree with you- except the "your people" comment , this show is the only example of a medical mariquana dispensary in the united states and the people being filmed should know better, than to show themselves using mariquana in such a manner, this only give ammunition to the anti pot establishment, and mark my words, when the time comes for any new st

And when the time comes for any new states to decide wether or not to have medical mariquana or not, this show, primarily their unprofessional behavior showing their smoking of cannabis, and eating of cannabis pills will be rolled out as a example - why not to let dispenaries be in their state.
this is what disturbs me about the show Weed Wars.
I can only hope they start acting responsibly, since there on television , and like it or not role models for the med mariquana movement. after all they are Harborside after all.

Harborside's Andrew DeAngelo said on Bill O'Reilly that he opposes legalization. While nobody should be denied marijuana for medical reasons, but to support medical use only is creating a marijuana apartheid system where medical use is protected and all other adult use is persecuted. Legalize for ALL adult use!

imagine an old lady walking threw a park with her handbag full of money, she has two ways of getting to the other side, one pathway she see's a couple drinking and on the other path she see' a couple smoking pot, which path would she take,
01:45 PM on 12/02/2011
Exactly.

Some people get in line for paxil, zoloft, ambien and viagra, others consume "plant-life" to address those same issues (and don't have to concern themselves with addiction, thoughts of suicide and five-hour boners).

To each their own.

I watched this show tonight..... it was very funny seeing the stoners justifying the "medical benefits" and seeing stoners trying to run a business. Very entertaining.
02:00 PM on 12/02/2011
"...trying to run a business".

What part about 90,000 customers and $21 million per year in gross sales do you consider "trying" and not "doing"?

To quote some stupid movie about cheerleaders...."it's already been 'broughten'"!
01:13 AM on 12/03/2011
The part where they did not understand the tax implications and have to pay 1.5 mill in three months. Gross sales mean nothing.... it's the profit measure that counts. Did you see the guy in the dress..... he wore it to the courthouse!.... and expected to win??? They did not even have counsel when they went before the City Managers! They got stoned before going there! His excuses were just that.... excuses. His first thought after he lost was to go back to the shop and get stoned! The other stoner owner in pigtails got stoned before driving to his lecture, was late, and missed his exit! These guys are just stoners and have NO IDEA of how to run a business. You cannot work efficiently when your stoned..... same as when your drunk.

This is what i was talking about, higher up in the posts...
this is the problem , theyre unprofessional behavior looks bad for the medical mariquana movement as a whole.

It is even funnier that you bought the government propaganda about marijuana and it' uers.
07:42 PM on 12/02/2011
please do not think that i dont advocate medical mariquana, i do.
but it must be done reponsibly, and Weed Wars does not represent the medical mariquana movement properly, they make us-(the rest of the med mariquana movement) look like a bunch of stoners trying to just get high.(becuase of the owners of harborside-not the patients)

People abused the law and grew to sell! We only have GREED to blame!

I have been waiting for this to air ever since I read about it months ago. My hope is that a great number of people will see that cannabis users are not all a bunch of aging hippies or degenerates. Anyone, their next-door neighbor, the elderly lady down the street, any ordinary otherwise law-abiding person they encounter may in fact choose to use this plant as medicine for the mind, body or spirit without the danger and side effects of many popular legal drugs as well as the well known effects of alcohol.

I hate to be the one to break this to you..... the show only enforced the fact that the owners and employees were basically just a bunch of stoners and with no since of direction. It was very entertaining!
07:34 PM on 12/02/2011
once again WEED WARS has done a disservice to the medical mariquana movement due to its unprofessional behavior of the dispensaries owners. read my above posts ....

I can't imagine too many of the opposition coming to the light with a title like that.

I admire them and don't envy their struggle. The people of the state voted in favor of this. It is not a threat to national security or encouraging local crime. This is a Fed. govt. in fear of losing control of even a minuscule part of society. That is scary.
10:22 AM on 12/01/2011
It's also the federal government wasting precious time and money on something that would be best left alone. Oh, that's right....there's an election year approaching and conservative votes are out there to be won.
02:24 PM on 12/02/2011
I respectfully disagree. This is NOT a "Federal Government" in fear...at least not in fear of "the people". This is a giant profit machine called Big Pharma using the Federal Government to protect it's investors investments.

If a plant that grows like a weed (and can be grown by almost anyone, anywhere) is found out to address all the issues the pharmaceutical chemical concoctions do (and do it better, without all those nasty side effects)...you can see where Big Pharma might go ahead and get "their" senators to "govern" this plant and and the people who know how to use it.

Ask GW Pharma about their 35 patents on this plant...and then have them explain why the first patent they own is titled, "Munchie Effect".

And THAT is what's really scary...that a profit machine dictates government policy.

This issue will determine whether Obama wins northern CA, where I live.

If he was smart, he would show some compassion, which the voters of CA already did in passing Prop 215 several years ago.

It is about compassion for those who need relief provided by no other drug, especially those in the final days of their lives.

Only a Republican would rob this relief from the dying.

and Obama.

It's also about having compassion for people being bilked by big pharma for prescriptions that have more side effects than benefits.
