$2 Subway Sandwiches To Undercut $5 Footlongs For Month Of December

Posted: 12/01/11 11:04 AM ET

Subway is already known for the low prices it charges for some big meals. Its $5 Footlong promotion, launched in 2008, has been a huge draw throughout the value-friendly past three years.

But this month, Subway is launching what may be its most serious discount ever. For all of December, the chain is selling six-inch subs for just $2. That means that Subway is now selling an entire foot of sandwich for as little as $4. Only two varieties of the half-footers -- meatball and cold cuts -- are subject to the promotion, but they're both popular picks.

Prognosticators have said predicted big things for the deal. Consumer psychologist Kit Yarrow told USA Today, "It's a magical price point... What it communicates to consumers is that Subway is on their side."

Even Gawker couldn't muster much vitriol for this latest move. Blogger Hamilton Nolan writes: "Only two dollars?? Subway is on my side! We apologize for this unabashed consumerist enthusiasm, and now return to your regularly scheduled reflexive loathing!"

A six-inch meatball sub has 480 calories, according to the Subway website. That means that the new deal serves up a whopping 240 calories per dollar, putting it neck-and-neck with the KFC, which DailyFinance found was the cheapest source for calories in a great piece from October.

It should be noted, though, that this actually isn't the first time Subway has sold its subs for $2. The company has been experimenting with limited-market Customer Appreciation Months, during which they sell the same two subs for $2, for several years now. But this is the first time the deal has gone nationwide.

They are just k!77ing off the competition at this point and it is working. There are at least 7 Subways in my town and just 2 Quiznos and one of the Quiznos just shut down and I don't know if the other one will survive either.

Whenever I've eaten at subway, no matter what kind of sandwich I ordered it always tastes the same.....tasteless. I'd rather go to Lenny's.

Oh my gosh! I'm going to save one dollar! If I buy two I'll pay three dollars more!

I like subway. I live in Japan. A "footlong" here without any toppings runs an average of 11$ (not including the difference between the dollar and the yen). A half a sub is around 7. God forbid you add toppings as they are 60 cents to a dollar a piece.... So, if I want a turkey sub with mayo and avocado..... Whole... Its about 14$. There is no $5 footlong here. I cannot WAIT to come home for Christmas and eat me a $2 sub.........

re: "KFC, which DailyFinance found was the cheapest source for calories in a great piece from October."

Actually, that piece (thanks for linking) only said that KFC was the cheapest source of calories compared to McDonald's and Taco Bell. Hardly an exhaustive comparison, and so, a pretty lame article, with its conclusion completely misrepresented in this one.

I think they should of added more subs, though. I love Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki, and I really think they should add more subs to the deal.

Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki is the BEEST! And they don't have it here in Japan "sniffle".... All of their subs are shrimp (something something)...

Not to sound dumb, but I have no idea what a banh mi is. And now I'm intruiged. If you like it over Subway, I'd love to know what it is though its doubtful they have it near me....

There will be lines out the door. You would never see Starbucks cut their prices like this, or imagine a ballpark selling $1 hot dogs.

MN Twins games used to have $1 dog games, I think it was Tuesday day games.

Not bad. But 240 calories per dollars isn't really that great compared to foods you can buy in a grocery store. For example, a 42oz canister of oatmeal delivers over 1600 calories per dollar, and those are far more nutritious calories. Bananas are another good example, at about 500 calories per dollar for a fresh fruit with considerable nutritional value.

It's pretty good when your job is directly across the street from a Subway!

And Subway is healthier than KFC, too! Move over, pizza. The meatball sub is the new vegetable!

So now you can get scraps swept up from the butcher floor, treated with amonia, mixed with GMO soy and doused in tomato sauce for 2 bucks. There must be a faster way to commit suicide.

Cold Cut Combo hold the meat = Veggie Delight.

Can I have a veggie sandwich for $2? It will cost less to make than a cold cut sandwich.
01:37 PM on 12/01/2011
Just order the coldcut and 86 the meat!

"It's a magical price point... What it communicates to consumers is that Subway is on their side."

Our local Subway is a mess. You can never get what you want because they are out of it or the equipment that they need is broken. I could never figure it out until I looked at the Want Ads in our local newspaper. They always have an ad in there. They want assistant managers and managers and say they will pay from $7.50 to $8.25 an hr. Well, no wonder the place is a mess, they just don't pay people enough to care, if this is what they pay management. So, I won't eat at Subway anymore. I would be happy to pay more for my sandwich in order for their employees to earn a living wage, but at $4 a foot there is no way Subway employees are getting raises anytime soon. The silver lining? Maybe now Subway employees can afford to eat the sandwiches that they sell.

So sad a lot of restaurant owners refuse to pay...fastfood or even more upscale.

If Subway were to offer a footlong for a dime, I wouldnt go there. I would not let that congressman, who cant feed his family on a meagerly $600,000 per year, have my dime. He and his 'poor' family can get a real job or starve.

Oh, I remember this now. There was the congressman mulitiple business owner who was against raising taxes on the rich, because he could barely feed his family. He claimed that after paying expenses, payroll etc. his actual own take home pay after taxes was just over $600,000 and he could barely feed his family on that. Among the businesses that he owned were several subway restaurants. Though it's not the whole corporation, so the argument that he would not get his dime, only works by not going to the Subways owned by that particular guy.
