WASHINGTON -- It's the most adorable Christmas event where you can shake a stick and toss a ball.

This Sunday, the Washington Animal Rescue League is hosting its annual holiday party.

Kids can decorate animals' dens at the party, which also features chestnut roasting, face painting and live music.

Kids' book authors and illustrators will be on hand to sign copies of their animal-themed books -- these include Erica Perl (author of "When Life Gives You OJ" and the "Chicken Butt" series), Jackie Urbanovic (author of "Duck at the Door" and "Duck Soup") and artist, art director and "I Like Dogs" illustrator Carol Hilliard.

Perhaps sweetest of all, proud dog mommies and daddies can have their waggy-tailed babies' photos taken with Santa. Human children can have their pictures taken with Santa at the open house, too.

The open house is on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m., at the Washington Animal Rescue League (71 Oglethorpe St. NW). Admission to the open house is free; WARL requests donations of unopened pet food and unused pet toys or equipment. Santa photos are $20, $5 for additional copies, with all proceeds going to help WARL's animals. All people and leashed canines are welcome.
