11 Fall Books You Need To Know About

First Posted: 12/02/11 08:25 AM ET   Updated: 01/02/12 06:25 PM ET

We get so many books in the mail, you wouldn't believe. I know, your heart bleeds for us. Most of them, to be brutal yet honest, merit little more than a cursory look followed by careful placement into the donation pile, but hidden among the piles of coal are also perfect-bound diamonds of the purest shimmer.

Here are our favorite ethically sourced jewels from the past few weeks.

Margaret Atwood's collection of think pieces and book reports sees her delve into the tricky question of what science fiction is, understanding how it differs from speculative fiction, and examining the essence of storytelling.

It's lighter than it sounds, an engaging and thoughtful read.

If Margaret Atwood's new nonfiction book is even half as good as her novels, it will be good indeed!

Thanks, Annemarie! I've read all of Margaret Atwood's "speculative fiction" novels ("The Handmaid's Tale," "Oryx and Crake," and "The Year of the Flood"), so I think I'm ready to read "In Other Worlds"!

I like the "Hoarders" book. I think I'm going to order 125 copies for myself.

Everybody should read Chuggie and the Desecration of Stagwater.

On A Study in Sherlock: "Flawed but fun for anyone who aches for more Holmes than Conan Doyle could create, this pipeful of tales from writers including Neil Gaiman and Laura Lippman is entertaining enough to honor the memory of the greatest-ever detective."

What do you mean, "honor the memory"? Are you suggesting that he's dead?

This is the true life story of a little girl who becomes a victim as a baby of unspeakable child abuse from a half brother who is much older than her. He begins grabbing up his baby sister Anne out of her bed taking her to his room and raping her while both parents are passed out drunk. I've had seven books published, but have become terrified people would buy them and think I was nuts. I mean that. I got lucky with a connection in the film industry who will be reviewing them now.

Since people posting on here are recommending their favorite books irrespective of whether they're new releases or not, I'll recommend one of mine. One of my very favorite works of fiction is "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy. It is beautifully written(but not an easy read), extremely violent(the most violent work of fiction I've ever read) but written in gorgeous prose and set in the American southwest of 1849. Brilliant...but not for the timid!!!!!

I am reading that now. Really good so far.

Glad you're enjoying it thus far! The first time I read it I was blown away.......could not get the imagery of the novel out of my head for days afterwards. I also recommend "Suttree" also by McCarthy. Very different...but a great character study. "Child of God", also by McCarthy is very good as well, and just as disturbing as "Blood Meridian".

If you like horror with a dose of otherworldly fantasy (think Niel Gaiman meets Chuck Palahniuk's horror works), please consider checking out my novel on Amazon & B&N: Mephistopolis. (You can read about 40 pages of it on Amazon.) Thx. =]

Ridiculous headline. A compilation of musings from Atwood is absolutely not a "masterpiece of science fiction".
02:36 PM on 12/03/2011
11/22/63 is without doubt the best fiction novel I have read in years.

Absolutely Right! Just finished it and blubbered like an idot for an hour! I was so caught up with the characters and the plot was magnificent. King's besrt work in some time, I think. I love him as a author anyway, but he out did himself ( which is pretty hard to do considering the classics he's written ) but this is in a class all by itself. Fabulous!
