Nearly All Who Lost Jobs In The Recession Are Worse Off Now: Poll

Unemployment

The economy is technically in recovery, but for a vast number of Americans, things are worse now than they were three years ago.

A recent poll of Americans who lost their job during the most intense period of the Great Recession shows that only 7 percent have climbed back to their previous financial position.

The other 93 percent may have experienced a minor or a major change in lifestyle; they may think of themselves as being in good, fair, or poor shape; and they may consider their new condition temporary or permanent. What they all have in common is that right now, they are not doing as well as they were before the recession hit.

The study, from the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, reflects what many people have come to believe since economists declared the Great Recession over in summer 2009 -- that the recovery is a recovery in name only.

Housing prices are still drifting downward. The income of the median household has fallen 6.7 percent -- to $49,909 from $53,518 -- in the past two years. Nearly half of all Americans say they struggle to afford basic household expenses. And while the unemployment rate unexpectedly declined in November to its lowest point since March 2009, millions are still either out of a job or only working limited hours when they'd like to be employed full-time.

The widespread hardships faced by so many Americans, including members of the middle class who have found themselves pried loose from a position of economic security, may explain why public opinion polls have repeatedly shown this year that most people believe the country is experiencing a full-blown recession or depression.

The Heldrich Center survey gives some idea of the specific challenges faced by people who lost their jobs at the height of the recession, a period the poll defines as August 2008 through August 2009.

Many respondents say they had to sell their belongings to make ends meet, and that they cut back on food spending to the point where it began to affect their day-to-day life. Over half of all respondents said that losing their jobs caused a strain in family relations.

The poll also revealed that a number of respondents had sought professional help for depression or substance abuse after losing their jobs -- findings that correlate with a body of evidence showing that unemployed workers are at greater risk for mental health issues, including anxiety, depression and compulsive behavior.

While it is true that President GWBush and the Conservative elite sold out the Working-Class to Wall Street, it is also true that President Obama has sold us out to Wall Street as his Wall Street filled administration/ cabinet proves and his Reaganesque "trickle-down" economic stimuli have been: payroll tax cuts, business tax cuts, etc..

While it is true that Obama may be the "lesser of two (Wall Street) evils", what the Working-Class needs is a Progressive warrior in the vain of Franklin D. Roosevelt, not a wannabe Reagan clone. We needed a public works program two years ago! As part of FDR's "New Deal", he created a Public Works Administration (PWA) and Work Projects Administration, that created over 8 million (living-wage) jobs in 10 years. Obama's stimulus programs at best may only create 500,000 (living-wage) jobs in 8 years.

I'm writing in Bernie Sanders for president and only voting for Progressives because the Democratic Party is corrupted by Blue Dogs, Moderates, and Centrists. Only Progressive-Democrats deserve our votes!

Absolutely, but watch, all the repubs will tell you that "government doesn't create jobs" and the politicians who say that are forgetting that they are themselves government employees thereby proving that government CAN create jobs.

Well of course. Nothing has been done since 2008 to correct any corrupt practices and inequality that has been building up in our governmental system since the late 60's.

John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University having a Keen Eye for the Obvious and extra money burning a hole in their pocket just had to do a study to confirm what is know far and wide. If I were one of their alumnus they would have a very hard time getting more money from me.

Congratulations. And I hope whoever took this "poll" can hear and feel the snide bitterness.
Hundreds of thousands of us have been saying for the last THREE YEARS that there is NO "recovery", and this mess did not "start in November of 2008". It started in APRIL of 2006. Houses selling 6 months earlier for $425,000 were suddenly not moving at ALL at $350,000, and being sold after months on the market for $300,000. This left a lot of people on the hurting end of things well BEFORE the politicians finally admitted something was severely wrong.

Job-hunting when you are an older woman is an exercise in futility. On-line sales means far fewer retail temporary jobs so when the unemployment runs out, we are left with nowhere to turn except welfare. It isn't much better for a woman in her forties. The only age group where you might have a fighting chance is between 24 and 34, old enough and out of college long enough to have some experience and not old enough to know enough to command a top wage. They won't hire you once you gain that knowledge because you're "over-qualified". Many older women don't have the up-to-date skills they need and when we go looking to gain those skills, sure, we can sign right up to take courses, only $1,685 for a six-month course. A lot of us don't have that kind of change in our piggy bank.

relying on unemployment checks should not have been your backup plan.

During the Bush [GW], Yrs., I can remember him pushing entrepreneurship, it created jobs, start your own business, he new the flood of jobs had started, and nothing was going to stop it....... SO get busy and make you own jobs.

Give every one a taste of the dream, put the poor guys in a house, they may never have another chance. Only the fall out from was unImaginable. And here we are.

Our first black President, expected to work miracles in three years, with half of the government pulling this country in one way and the other going another way.
At a time We need the wisedom of Jobe, we are getting Rand Paul, Machelle Bachman, that just a start.Where do we go from here?

Take a look at you assets, what you have going for you, and whats against you. Take the leap, what can you loose. I volunteered for a organization, went for 2hrs a week, found myself with a job after a month. Just saying, I know it's a mess, and you have use your wits just to survive. Just keep at it.

Does the unemployment rate factor in the people who got holiday jobs and will be laid off in a few months after the holiday rush ends? What about the people who are unemployed and not collecting benefits do they count in that number anymore? It would be nice to see the real unemployment rate.

The unemployment rate that we hear about is "seasonally adjusted"... it accounts for those holiday jobs so that the numbers can be compared month to month. On a "real" unadjusted rate, the unemployment rate is 8.2% (vs. 8.6%) and there are 700,000 fewer unemployed people actually than there are based on a seasonally adjusted rate.

Unemployment rate dropped to 8.6%. Of course there are some asterisks -- significant number of people dropping out of workforce and some seasonal effects. BUT this is clearly good news for Obama. Things are moving in the direction he needs -- and the country needs. If this picks up and at least some of the job creation continues, the rate may get below 8% before the election. That would be a significant accomplishment and help reelect the President.

One thing that has not been reported is that there are 278,000 more people who reported themselves as working in November. There are 1,600,000 more working since a year ago.

Wow, what a recovery. People are forced off of high paying jobs and accept low hour jobs with minimum wage.
No one is buying-they cannot afford to.

EMPTY DREAMS! We lie to ourselves everyday about domestic employment opportunity, and the American Dream. It is going to be better tomorrow. I am going to remain positive. Tomorrow has come and gone! I peer at a broken glass on the floor in a puddle of water. The streetlights on Main Street flicker before they become dark.

With so many people that were obamasourced (fired, laid off, out sourced, downsized, etc...), it is not surprising that there are so many people who hold obama personally responsible because of his bad ideas and bad policies.

But, while people are suffering, obama is now back on vacation.... It sure must be nice to be a Liberal Elite.
07:13 AM on 12/04/2011

PTesidents who took most vacations?both Bush boys.
those were the only days they were not doing some damage to our country.
