When you were too restless to sleep, she read you the same story a million times, never wavering in her theatric enthusiasm. Instead of battling the mall crowds to hunt for bath soaps, return the favor by stuffing her stocking with a story.

I am a reader. I have a large library. I buy books every month, but please, please don't show this list to my eight grown kids. They might buy me one, and I'd have to smile and say, "thank you." I hate lying.

I'm still wondering why anyone would want a Martha Stewart book, but I guess she's still popular.

My mom always gets a book for christmas just like she always gave books to me and my brother as children. She's getting P. D. James's Death at Pemberly and a gift certificate from our local indie book store plus a few other little things she'll love. I'd never choose from a book but then I know my mom's taste.

We still do stocking stuffers which is fun.

You should buy your mother items identified on her wish list on Amazon.com. Not every mother fits the stereotype to which this "article" panders.

What if mom isn't a reader? What if mom is blind? Should I still buy her these worthless choices?

Seems like mom's son is a contrarian and has a very apropos Huffpost username.

I love to read but I prefer to pick out my own books. First is the pleasure of browsing in the bookstore, then reading the jacket discription of the story, and finally selecting the one that truly appeals to you. Half of the pleasure is the trip to the book store and looking around. Books are like friends, no one can select them for you. It is a private affair between you and the book. Give a gift card and let the person enjoy the experience.

I love receiving gift certificates from indie book stores! I confess they are my favorite gifts to give and receive.

If I would have gotten my mother a book for Christmas she would have beatten me with it. I think mom is looking for something more then a book that i am sure she would rather pick out for herslef and not by someone telling her this is a good book. Oh well some poeple are just cheep.

To the best of my knowledge, my mother (RIP) never read anything other than her Bible. And I'm not even sure she ever read that completely. Anything that wasn't in the Bible she thought she didn't need to know.

May I suggest a gift card to Barnes and Noble or other book store? I personally hate to have others try to select books for me, but there were a couple of interesting ones on this list. Just let me make the choice. No Martha Stewarts, please!

I agree. My husband keeps a running list of books I express an interest in, but then he throws in a gift card so I can go find other stuff whenever I feel like it.

Because of course, all women care about is cooking, crafts, and celebrities, with a brief nod to history (of women) and art.
