Scotch Whisky Shortages Feared As Asian And Latin American Demand Rises

The Scotch whisky industry is like the Titanic. It's big, famous, awash in money and sees a lot of action in the North Atlantic. The Scotch whisky industry and the Titanic also share a marked difficulty responding quickly to adversity.

In the case of the Titanic, this was a product of the ship's huge size and consequent momentum; any James Cameron fan can tell you that this momentum made it difficult to avoid icebergs. The whisky industry's lassitude, on the other hand, is a function of its product's long aging times. The Glenfidditch or Johnnie Walker Blue you buy at your local liquor store was originally produced over a decade ago, and then laboriously aged in oak casks. This lengthy maturation process means that a spike in demand for whisky can't immediately be offset by a commensurate increase in supply.

According to the Guardian, Scotch demand is spiking right now, thanks to an expansion of the Asian and Latin American middle class and a gradual reduction in import tariffs on whisky. These factors have led some in the industry to fear a serious shortage in the whisky supply -- one that will be hard, if not impossible, to address in the near term.

Another factor that may contribute to the problem, at least down the road, is last year's drought in Scotland. Last summer, producers in Islay reported difficulty getting enough fresh water to make the mash that eventually becomes Scotch whisky.

It's hard to tell how much drinkers should be worrying about the possibility of a shortage, though. Producers have been sounding the alarm for years -- could they be crying wolf to try to justify higher prices?

I don't think there's a shortage yet but the producers has responded by raising prices on their premium brands. One of my favorites, Lagvulin, has increased considerably in the last few years in my region. The retailer said it was due to the high demand in China. I believe it. I visited there often in the past and they are heavy drinkers and liquor is often given as a business gift. The more expensive the better, of course on a company expense account.

Could have sworn Lagavulin was mined and not distilled. Still, what do I need to do to merit such a gift?

Hey, this is pretty serious stuff we're talking about here. I have to get throuh nearly a year of the coming political campaigns and I need my Single Malt Whisky to help me manage it. I don't care how you do it but the party responsible for keeping my supply uninterrupted best get their job done or me'n the other 70 year olds that hang around my bar are gettin' on our Harleys (and 2 Vespas) and coming for you. So fix it.

The simple truth is that a ten, twelve, fifteen, or eighteen year single malt is going to take around ten, twelve fifteen, or eighteen years to produce. Hence the problem.

Distillers did not know ten, twelve, fifteen, or eighteen years ago that worldwide demand today would spike; and in response they cannot create out of thin air that which takes years (by definition) to produce.

There is a coming shortage. This is not like sugar, coffee, toilet paper, or rice shortages. The problem is much more long term. Anybody who knows anything about the single malt industry knows that.

For all of us that simply cannot get by without our "wee dram" this is a crisis of epic proportions....

I remember the coffee shortage, the sugar shortage, the rice shortage so everyone stocked up and we NEVER SAW A SHORTAGE. Think about it; this close to Christmas and New Years and what do the manufacturers and retailers want you to do? Rush out and buy plenty for the holidays just in case they run out before then and sorry but "our suppliers ran out because of the SHORTAGE and we won't get anymore before the holidays"!

Hills and stills are not going to produce good scotch. You can make a pretty good sour mash, but it is far inferior to a good single malt.

These "shortage" scares are nothing but a marketing campaign. A few years ago, tequila was supposed to rise to $100/bottle due to the mysterious "agave shortage" in mexico. The same myths have circulated about merlot grapes, russian vodka, etc.
