Outside view of Toni Baur's shop for woodcarved articles is seen on Dec.1, 2011 in Oberammergau, Germany. Oberammergau woodcarving tradition, which is the most famous in Bavaria, has its roots in the 12th century, though members of the St. Luke's guild, the association of Oberammergau woodcarvers, deplore the decline of the tradition both from a lack of new generations of woodcarvers as well as competition from wood figurine factories in northern Italy and Asia. In Oberammergau approximately 50 woodcarvers still churn out figurines of mostly religious motifs throughout the year. (Johannes Simon,Getty Images)
Wow! Beautiful. I've just come back from Italy where my parents live, I brought home with me a beautiful handmade presepe (nativity set) bought in Val Gardena, in the Dolomites, at the Demi Art workshop. Italian wood carvers are so brilliant!

That must be the best way to make a living on this planet. Reminds me of the guys who carved the carousel horses and animals during the late 1800's through the 1950's.
And then they were all made from fiberglass, and the charm was gone.

I happen to be working on a carousel animal right now. It will go on an all wooden animal carousel in Kingsport, TN. We have two of these wonderful carousels here in Chattanooga, TN too. All the animals were and are carved by volunteers. There's no money in though, but a lot of love.
