Bill O'Reilly's War On Christmas Crusade Heats Up Again (VIDEO)

"For the past 15 years, we have stood up for Christmas here on the 'Factor.'"

Thus began Bill O'Reilly's latest effort in his long-running war against the "War On Christmas."

O'Reilly and Fox News have attracted much public ridicule for their extensive reporting on the perceived threat against the holiday, but they are as committed to it as ever. On Friday, O'Reilly took aim at Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee, who has become a target of Fox News for erecting a "holiday tree" instead of a Christmas tree. "Amazingly dumb!" O'Reilly said. He also called out his favorite enemy, the "secular progressives" of the world.

What does a Christmas tree have to do with the birth of Christ, anyway??

Billy O'Reilly, another really good argument for birth control/abortion. If only there was such a thing as retroactive birth control.

It would be nice if this dude could ever get over himself and/or go away. The only way that will happen, however, is if his ratings tank, which (alarmingly) is not happening. The Wheel of Fortune, Pudding-Eater set really like him, go figure...

Bill is just talking to his people. FOX viewers love Jesus and hate taxes, and that is pretty much it, so he has to repeat himself a bit. every now and then. But they don't notice much. They all live in a haze, eyes closed, arms in the air, singing Jesus songs, speaking tongues, rolling on the floor, listening to Bill... what a life.

Riiight, Bill-oh. Never mind that every year I have to register my house as a hazard to low-flying aircraft. I don't accept your Bible of your Jeezus, so I must be making War on Christmas.

Blessed Be this Yule, Ebenezer. I'm sure you'll be much more comfortable than the outsourced factory workers who eat your gruel every night on the Fox.

I'm sure Christmas will find Bill on his knees at midnight mass, praying for all those less fortunate. Then he will go to a soup kitchen to serve Christmas dinner to the homeless families, before he goes home to start his taxes so he knows how much money to send to his off shore accounts to avoid paying any taxes.

Yup Bill must surely know the true meaning of Christmas. He demonstrates his christian principles everyday on his show.

Have you ever taken a look at how much he gives to different charities, or do you just repeat the same things everyone else is saying? Do some research and get back to me.

So I guess the opposite of a secular progressive would be a religious regressive, correct?

Since it's the 'season of giving', O'Really can send Ms. Mackris' bank account another "Happy Holidays" card: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2009/1013091oreilly1.html

I always believed the greeting "happy holidays" meant to include Christmas, New Years, Hannukka, and all those winter holidays including Saturnalia and Keltic Yule -- whatever! As in "whatever floats your holiday boat, long may it sail!"
If there was ever an effort to "secularize" the holiday, it came from Christians turning it into a shopping spree.

While Christmas may be a religious holiday for most, there are also a percentage of Americans who celebrate the holiday and with its symbols (i.e. the tree, santa etc.) but do so in a non-religious way. So is the Christmas Tree a religious symbol? The answer is "sometimes". Thus while it is certainly inappropriate for a natively scene to be displayed on public property, you run into more issues with a Christmas tree because, while of the 90% of Americans who celebrate Christmas some view it as a religious symbol and others don't, the 10% who do not celebrate Christmas DO view it as a religious symbol.

While there is certainly a case the Christmas has morphed into more of an American tradition and less a Christian one, the fact is that 10% of Americans DON'T celebrate Christmas largely because they view it as a religious affair. Thus to protect those 10% of Americans from having their government endorse what they feel is a largely religious holiday, its probably safer for the government to err on the side of non-religious caution and say "happy holidays". In good time Christmas may be more embraced as an American tradition and less as a religious one.

Attempting to approach the issue from a historical position as Bill does however is totally absurd as customs and traditions change greatly with time, as do their meanings, and this is not an issue where something purely is or is not definitively religious.
