Cam Newton Sets Rushing Touchdown Record In Panthers 38-19 Win Over Buccaneers (VIDEO)

By FRED GOODALL   12/ 4/11 04:37 PM ET   AP

TAMPA, Fla. -- Cam Newton didn't beat Tampa Bay single-handedly. It just seemed like it.

The rookie ran for three more touchdowns to set the NFL single-season record for rushing TDs by a quarterback, leading the Carolina Panthers to a 38-19 rout of the struggling Buccaneers on Sunday.

The 2010 Heisman Trophy winner scored the 11th, 12th and 13th TDs of his career on a trio of 1-yard runs. He also had a 27-yard reception to set up Jonathan Stewart's first-quarter TD and threw a 19-yard TD pass to Legedu Naanee to finish one of Carolina's three scoring drives of 80-plus yards.

The Panthers (4-8), who drafted Newton No. 1 overall, doubled their victory total for last season. Tampa Bay (4-8), which played in throwback creamsicle jerseys and white helmets bearing the logo of a winking pirate, has lost six straight and seven of eight following a 3-1 start.

The Bucs played without quarterback Josh Freeman, who sat out with an injury to his throwing shoulder. Josh Johnson made his fifth pro start, throwing for 229 yards and one touchdown while also leading his team in rushing.

Newton completed 12 of 21 passes for 204 yards and no interceptions. He added 54 yards rushing on 14 carries, teaming with Stewart (14 attempts, 80 yards) to help Carolina gain 163 on the ground. Newton nearly scored on a 27-yard reception after throwing backward to Naanee on the far side of the field and taking a throw-back to the left.

Stewart's 1-yard run put Carolina up 14-0. Newton leaped over the pile to finish an 83-yard, game-opening march and tied the record for rushing TDs by a quarterback to make it 31-12 in the third quarter. His third TD, giving him one more than New England's Steve Grogan scored in 1976, finished a 15-play, 81-yard drive.

Connor Barth kicked field goals of 50, 47, 46 and 44 yards for Tampa Bay in the first half. Johnson didn't get the Bucs into the end zone until he threw a 23-yard TD pass to Dezmon Briscoe in the fourth quarter.

Freeman injured his throwing shoulder on Tampa Bay's final offensive play of last week's 23-17 loss at Tennessee when he dropped the snap on a fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak and was stopped for no gain. He was limited in practice, making some soft throws on Thursday and Friday and declared out Sunday morning.

The third-year pro became Tampa Bay's starter following an 0-7 start his rookie season and led his team to a surprising 10-6 record in 2010 to heighten expectations for this year. But after throwing for 25 touchdowns and just six interceptions a year ago, Freeman has been inconsistent this season while also playing the past few weeks with a sprained right thumb that he insists was not a factor in his performance.

Johnson started four games – all losses – in 2009. The fourth-year pro had appeared in six games this season, primarily on designed running plays and attempting just seven passes. His running ability showed up late in the second quarter, when he scrambled 14 yards on third-and-5 and for a 7-yard gain that set up Barth's fourth field goal, trimming Carolina's lead to 21-12.

But the Panthers weren't content to sit on the ball in the final minute of the half. Newton threw 12 yards to Stewart and 31 yards to Brandon LaFell to set up Olindo Mare's 43-yard field goal as time expired to restore a 12-point lead.

Most of Tampa Bay's offense in the opening half came on two plays – Johnson's 38-yard completion to Arrelious Benn and a 42-yarder to Mike Williams.

It's been fun having Cam Newton as my starting QB on my fantasy football team. He was my backup to Philip Rivers, but I benched Rivers early on and never looked back.

I wished I had benched Rivers even sooner than I did. My team would be in a great spot right now. As a Charger fan, I felt like I just had to keep Rivers in. So much for loyalty. Sure, he had a good game Monday night, but the poor Jags just couldn't get out of their own way.

F&F for your slogan.

Don't know how your fantasy football teamed fared overall, but with Cam Newton in, my team finished in second place--last year I was in the cellar. Too bad I didn't get smart sooner, like the same time you did.

I never was a Panthers' fan, but, this kid has ignited that franchise and one should not be surprised if he is a perennial All-Pro. Very impressive!

This guy is Amazing. If you're a fan of athleticism, how could you not like him? #ROY Rookie Of the Year

If you're simply a fan of the position of QB being played well you should be a fan also. His passing is way more impressive than his athletic ability. He threw a rocket on that TD pass.

There's the totality of events known as history...

and then there's a reckless, colloquial version often used...which is what HP did. Its a thing that, should be thought about before being used. Otherwise, it dilutes matters of high import when those events occur.

Sure, yesterday is history. But Cam didn't make history, he established a stat.

Jamarcus Russell was a lazy malcontent that put forth as little effort as possible - thats one reason he had a short rope.

What does Jamarcus Russell have to do with Cam Newton? They don't have ANYTHING in common......oh wait.

Besides skin tone what do these two have in common?
I'd take J Russell over Ryan Leaf any day of the week. Is Leaf still on the run or was he finally caught for his B&E's to feed his drug habit? He also stole pills from injured players at the school he worked for before he got ghost.

I still cant figure out what your point was. The funny thing is I would be accused of playing the race card if I tell you what you're really saying. LOL

It's always in the flow of the game. You'd have to watch or understand what's going on when you do, to know that. In addition, the majority of his rushing TD are from short distances and some are fakes of the hand off to the running back that was made of a play that was run earlier that appeared to be a hand off to the running back again.

Also notice that he didnt break a record for most carries or yards.

Do you think he just gets up to the line and does whatever he wants with the ball?

It appears as though the only point of your comment was to disparage the kid and through salt on an impressive accomplishment.

I state again there is something wrong.
Either the chemistry is not right or the coordination is not right..
If not Rodgers, look at Brees. The ease at which they are able to pass is missing at panthers. either the QB or the receivers or both.. something is not working.
Look at the results also

All those so called experts have no creditability, first Tebow and now Cam. These morons said neither one could play at the NFL level. Days of the pure pocket passer are done.

True, now you have to be balanced, able to run, throw & run, and have patience in the pocket. Being single faceted in today's game only hurts teams from here on out.

Ah no. Pocket passers are most certainly not done but being able to scramble has always been to a team's advantage. When you have the talent in the pocket of a Brady, Manning or Rogers you don't need to run.

QB's run not because they want to....rather because they HAVE to.

Yes. I think it's just a coincidence now that we have 2 running q'backs appear at the same time in Cam and Tebow and that it's an aberration.
Running q'backs get hurt. That's a fact. Where's Michael Vick right now.? If you run, eventually you'll get pummeled .
Running quarterbacks also cause chaos in the pocket for linemen and coaches hate that.
So like Seafarer says the best q'backs operate in the pocket but if they feel the heat they get out of there ,get a few yards and go down.

In two games he'll break Payton Manning's rookie passing record. He'll be a beast for sure in the coming years, I just hope the coaches put an end to his rushing in the endzone, its a recipe for disaster. He's broken the record, now he can just hand it off to the running backs.

I've been waiting for one - just one - any one - of the talking heads who spent so much time this spring ginning up a hatred for Cam Newton and disparaging his abilities to man up and say "Perhaps I was wrong." Probably too much to ask for. But I see from the few comments to this article that the haters are still there.
02:06 AM on 12/05/2011
I'm not a talking head, but I'll admit I was skeptical. You saw what he did at Auburn in the one year he started there... I figured he was just one of those guys who could turn a college team around just based on sheer athleticism. Vince Young and JaMarcus Russell were sort of the same way... one of those two dropped out of football when they realized they were actually going to have to start earning their keep, and the other is a backup.

Seems like Newton has a better shot of working out.

jamarcus and Vince were never given a chance to excel....vince young was rookie of the year and benched the next year....jamarcus was also given just one year to prove himself.......Alex smith was given over 6 years, eli manning was allowed to grow...I am amazed that some quarterbacks are allowed to grow and some are benched immediately....wonder why that is hmmmm....by the way mcnabb went to 4 championships in a row ....one superbowl and was benched as soon as he had a few bad games....meanwhile Favre the Interception king wasl allowed to play through his bad games

I'm pulling for Cam to really make it big in the NFL. The problem that I have with Cam is that he is cocky and arrogant. Once he tones that nonsense down, no telling how great he can become.
11:04 PM on 12/04/2011
He's the opposite of arrogant. I wish his detractors could point to a single instance of him being arrogant.
12:22 AM on 12/05/2011
Where some people see the prerequisite confidence that's need at the QB position in a player like Cam Newton, others will always point to cockiness and arrogance......bereft any real evidence.
Cam is on the field to solve defenses and not to provide therapeutic closure for people and whatever problems they're burdened with.

That's called confidence which is required to play the qb position in the NFL. He is not cocky and all his teammates love him. They actually wanted to make him a Captain this year.

Scouts have never at any point questioned his accuracy. Only the talking heads who think you cant be an accurate passer and an effective runner. He played in the SEC against semi pro defense just about every week and led the nation is passing efficiency. More was done from the pocket than detractors were willing to admit. His success is no surprise to me.
