Iran: U.S. Spy Plane Reportedly Shot Down By Iran Armed Forces

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran's armed forces have shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane that violated Iranian airspace along the country's eastern border, the official IRNA news agency reported Sunday.

An unidentified military official quoted in the report warned of a strong and crushing response to any violations of the country's airspace by American drone aircraft.

"An advanced RQ-170 unmanned American spy plane was shot down by Iran's armed forces. It suffered minor damage and is now in possession of Iran's armed forces," IRNA quoted the official as saying.

No further details were published.

The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan said in a statement the aircraft may be an American drone that its operators lost contact with last week while it was flying a mission over neighboring western Afghanistan.

A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the classified nature of the incident, said the U.S. HAD "absolutely no indication" that the drone was shot down.

Iran is locked in a dispute with the U.S. and its allies over Tehran's disputed nuclear program, which the West believes is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran denies the accusations, saying its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and that it seeks to generate electricity and produce isotopes to treat medical patients.

The type of aircraft Iran says it downed, an RQ-170 Sentinel, is made by Lockheed Martin and was reportedly used to keep watch on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan as the raid that killed him was taking place earlier this year.

The surveillance aircraft is equipped with stealth technology, but the U.S. Air Force has not made public any specifics about the drone.

Iran said in January that two pilotless spy planes it had shot down over its airspace were operated by the United States and offered to put them on public display. In July, Iranian military officials showed Russian experts several U.S. drones they said were shot down in recent years.

Also in July, Iranian lawmaker Ali Aghazadeh Dafsari said Iran's Revolutionary Guard shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane that was trying to gather information on an underground uranium enrichment site.

Dafsari said the pilotless plane was flying over the Fordo facility near the holy city of Qom in central Iran but the Guard denied the report, saying its air defenses had only hit a test target.

Iran publicly confirmed for the first time in Feb. 2005 that the United States has been flying surveillance drones over its airspace to spy on its nuclear and military facilities.

The Islamic Republic holds frequent military drills, primarily to assert an ability to defend against a potential U.S. or Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities.

Tehran has focused part of its military strategy on producing drones for reconnaissance and attacking purposes.

Iran announced three years ago it had built an unmanned aircraft with a range of more than 600 miles (1,000 kilometers), far enough to reach Israel.

Ahmadinejad unveiled Iran's first domestically built unmanned bomber aircraft in August 2010, calling it an "ambassador of death" to Iran's enemies.

I wish to retract my previous statement. The dirty bomb threat hadn't occurred to me. It is something Iran may be capable of now. Were they to strike a U.S. city with such a weapon, cry havoc!

Is that not just normal response to the invasion of ones' air space by a unknown foreign power. There is no doubt America would do exactly the same if its' air space was invaded by spy planes. Those who spy are out to steal. That is what spying is, Stealing.

Good job Iran..Defend yourself. Keep defying zionism, maybe one day America will wake up and kick out aipac/adl/jdl etc

I am dumbfounded by many of the comments posted here, by folks with views from both sides of the aisle. Why is it that any comment posted against the Iranian position sees the poster derided as an Isreal loving, Muslim hating, gun toting Christian Zionist infidel? And in turn, anybody who posts a comment in favor of Iran's position is immediately attacked and accused of being an anti-Semitic, peace hating, war mongering, bomb throwing, wealth distributing, Socialistic and elitist hippie? Thank God that somebody( the US just happens to have the greatest ability to) is flying reconnaissance drones over countries like Iran and South Korea! What can be thought of isolationist countries, that desperately seek to keep anybody on the outside from knowing what they're doing, seeking vast nuclear proliferation? Just because a person doesn't want to see Iran with nuclear weapons they aren't automatically in favor of Israel being a nuclear power. In my humble opinion, nuclear weapons are a scary proposition for any country to possess, and that includes the US. The entire world and everybody in it should be looking to create a world in which these monsters of devastation did not exist! The mere presence of nuclear armaments around the world poses risks of horrible eventualities. This point we should all be able to agree on. Somebody, be it the United States or somebody else, definitely should be seeking through reconnaissance the knowledge of where these things exist.

There's no such drone because such event would be a great victory for the Iranians, dancing around the down US aircraft with many photographs of it. The Iranians would be exporting it to the world about the Great Satan's attempt to destroy Iran. No people! There's no US drone, just Iranian spin of silly nonsense.
07:57 PM on 12/06/2011
First of all, US has confirmed it. Second, Iranians are not a bunch of primitives to dance around and you won't any photos because not only Iran doesn't want US know how much damage was done to the drone, but also, right now, it's being torn apart by Iranian, Chinese and Russian scientists for reverse engineering.
02:46 AM on 12/07/2011
Magic 62---

You expect everyone to believe that Iranians didn't dance around in blithe of shooting down an American aircraft? I don't think so, unless you were there at the crash site, which I doubt it; furthermore, not taking any photographs of their trophy is a bit of silly nonsense. Iranians are know to be elated when defeating the Great Satan when given the chance. In do time photographs will be leaking out from Iran or from elsewhere. You're cocksure about your comment?

Iran will suffer when syrian rebels take control of their country. Iran funds terrorist groups all across the region: Hezbollah and the Taliban. Their encouragement of violence including the recent embassy attacks will come back to haunt them.

Syrian rebels are reduced to a couple of neighborhoods in 3rd and 4th largest cities.

The best thing lran can do is to pubIish the bIueprint of the RQ-170 drone under Creative Commons so aII the countries in the worId can produce the same drone. That wouId help promote a more baIanced world.

So your telling me that north korea an isolationist state deserves our best technology.
09:51 AM on 12/07/2011
The RX-170 drone is already obsolete. The US uses it in Countries with little or no defense such as Iran and S Korea. Iran would be re-engineering very old technology.
