Dell Streak 7 Discontinued? iPad Competitor Ends Online Sales

Dell Streak 7 Tablet Discontinued Apple Ipad

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/05/11 11:46 AM ET Updated: 12/05/11 11:46 AM ET

Just ask Joe Dimaggio: All streaks have to come to an end. And now it appears that Dell's Streak -- specifically, it's Streak 7 tablet -- is nearing its own conclusion.

The Dell Streak 7, a seven-inch Android tablet, the companion to the discontinued Streak 5, is no longer available online, as pointed out by Streak Smart. Dell's Streak 7 was announced in January 2011 at CES as the world's first 4G tablet, though that distinction does not seem to have saved it from the axe.

While it has not officially ended the life of the Streak 7, Dell did provide this ominous statement to our sister site Engadget:

Dell remains committed to the mobility market and continues to sell products here and in other parts of the world. Streak 7 delivered a unique experience for customers who wanted a larger screen-size yet the freedom of staying connected to their personal and professional content while on the-go. It continues to be available in many markets through retail, distributors and carrier partners such as Optus in Australia. A 10-inch version of the tablet, Streak 10 Pro, is currently offered in China, offering the ultimate digital divide between work and life. The Venue and Venue Pro devices, as well, continue to earn accolades for performance, design and functionality around the world. We also recently launched the Latitude ST, a 10-inch Windows 7-based touch-screen tablet designed for vertical markets such as education, finance and healthcare in November of this year. We remain committed to expanding our reach beyond PCs with a targeted set of open, standards-based mobility solutions and services designed for commercial and mobile professional customers.

Cutting through the corporate spin: It seems that Dell is going to let retailers sell the remainder of the Dell Streak 7's that have already been produced, but that the company will no longer be making new ones (similar to the endgame for the HP Touchpad). Instead, it is shifting its focus to Windows tablets and Windows phones; when Windows 8 is released next year, it is expected to be more touch-friendly and ready-made for tablets. Analysts expect a new boom in the tablet market when these Windows 8 tablets arrive, and Dell appears to be abandoning Android for the more enterprise-friendly Windows OS.

The Dell Streak 7 joins the HP TouchPad (and, perhaps soon, the BlackBerry PlayBook) as victims of the dominance of the iPad and, more recently, the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet. Though the Dell Streak 7 sold for just $200, it never caught on with consumers; limited advertising, poor initial reviews and availability on nothing but T-Mobile were probably factors.

Speaking of T-Mobile: The Dell Streak 7's product page still listed on the T-Mo website for as low as $99.99, though the tablet is now listed as "Out of Stock."

I would have bought one, had I known this was coming. I saw it at BestBuy.com for $159 in a search for tablets, but when I clicked on the page nothing was there (page not found). So, I called them and they *thought* they probably wouldn't be getting any more in. Bummer.

7" is OK for kids, which is what I wanted it for.

Android seems like nothing but a giant headache for the average user.

They can bring Amazon Hell, fire, SnowStorm, Hurricane, DustStorm, Hail, EarthQuake for all i care, i got iPad 1, and i can't wait for iPad 3. Apple products simply works, and is fun to jail break too. Of course apple products are explosive so is Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Bugatti Veron, compare to Kia Sephia, Hyundai Accent.

Bites the dust, really? How dramatic. It was launched 12 months ago. It had sales that were in line with how much they marketed it. How is this news?

"Bites the dust" is a very common English expression meaning that a product is no longer being made.

Tweener product that didn't serve much of a purpose. Too heavy for a pure reader. Not functional enough at 7 inches for anything else.

Maybe if it had phone capabilities, some people would have been interested.

It was just too far behind the tech curve.

iPad, smypad...Overpriced Chinese crud...

Amazon is going to smash Apple. They don't even make a "pad" yet and they are comparing a book reader/internet browser/ponit of sale device to a computer...

good riddance Apple.

Remember how mp3 players were so much cheaper and had more features than iPods? Remember how much trouble Apple was in then? I can't believe they are still around; no one bought their stuff. Overpriced junk. They should have made their products entirely out of cheaper plastics and lowered their prices. Does any of those poor unfortunate iPod users even have their iPods anymore? Bad choice, am I right? Don't even get me started with that closed software. No one is ever going to buy from "iMusic," or what ever they call it.

So almost half of the posts here are saying "Stop calling everything an iPad competitor."

Which means everything from here on will be referred to as an iPad competitor to get you to click the article and post that you are tired of seeing things being called an iPad competitor.

I see all current devices sort of fading away.  Especially after there are more capable machines (Tegra 3) and better software options (Windows 8--assuming it is as capable as they claim.)

The real problem is that these devices just are not able to do enough to justify their existence.   A $400 laptop replacement is one thing, but these glorified big phones that cannot make phone call are not cutting the mustard.

And I say this as someone who bought one of the oversize no-phone-call-making phones.  I do like it, but it does not do enough to keep my from using another device.  I just allows me to do more in bed--mostly because I am not doing enough of what I should be doing in bed.

The iPad is getting more and more capabilities, so it is here to stay.

The other day I saw what was claimed to be a "professional quality" technician's spectrum analyzer that plugged into the iPad and had some nice looking software attached. In time there will be many more.

But you are absolutely right about these sub 9 inch screen devices with no phone capability. I don't see their purpose.

I can imagine a 6 inch device with phone capability may possibly entice me to replace my phone and use a headset to make calls, but I'm not going to carry a 7 inch brick around for no reason.
