Dog Rescues Kittens Left For Dead On Roadside (VIDEO)

In a heroic story beyond reason, a yellow lab named Reagan made a discovery on an Iowa roadside that saved two precious lives.

Two kittens had been sealed into a bag of Meow Mix, left on a roadside and run over by traffic on a rural Iowa highway about three months ago, WHOTV.com reports.

It was Reagan the dog who dragged the bag home and whined until his owner opened it. Reagan's owner discovered two kittens barely hanging onto life, while the rest of the litter hadn't survived, prompting a call to the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary.

"There was a litter of four or five of them and you couldn't tell if there were two or three [in the bag]...they had been run over by a vehicle. It was not a pretty sight," Linda Blakely of the animal shelter told WHOTV.com.

The Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary is now housing the two kittens -- Skipper and Tipper -- who weren't originally expected to live through the ordeal. The two were bottled-fed every two hours and are now back to their normal lively selves, the news outlet reports.

Thanks to Reagan, both kittens are now up for adoption through the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary.

When will we accept the fact that animals do not act by instinct any more than we do? Animals (at least mammals and birds, if not others) are sentient beings who share with us a rich emotional life. To put it in terms that humans may understand, animals are people too!

This story provides one pause about the meaning of "humane" when a dog is teaching the meaning to humans - perhaps it should be dogmatic instead of humane.

I agree with Bill, if I think up horrible things to do to those people who left those kittens to be run over in a bag, I'm no better than they are. I will say this, however: Next to the dog who saved them, I know which one is the real "animal."

Very cruel. Just a reminder though, don't try to be equally cruel by trying to one up each other with examples of horrific crimes against humanity you would inflict on someone thus becoming their equal in what they did to those cats.

Be better than them and simply hope they can be brought to justice for their crimes.

I generally hate expressing outrage over animal cruelty since every day im EATIN DEM HAMBURGERS, but seriously- how can people be so cruel?
03:14 PM on 12/13/2011
If only we could rid the world of the type of people who would do that to the poor kittens. I hope the people who did that die a very slow and painful death. Such people really don't deserve to live. Animals are truly innocent and deserve our love, compassion and protection. sigh. Thank God for that dog !

“Many people do not realize that the Bible commands for people to show loving care and humaneness to animals.

[[How humans carry out their responsibility toward animals is important. God's Word says: "The righteous one is caring for the soul of his domestic animal." (Proverbs 12:10) Indeed, God's laws for Israel repeatedly emphasized the need to be considerate of animals. (Deuteronomy 22:4, 10; 25:4) In the course of carrying out their responsibility, humans have often made pets of domestic animals, and they have even tamed wild ones and made pets of them too.—Genesis 1:24.

When people exercise proper dominion over animals, the result can be heartwarming. A beloved animal may be viewed as a treasured companion, even as part of the family. That this was true thousands of years ago is seen in the account in the Bible about a poor man's "one female lamb, a small one." The prophet Nathan told King David about the lamb, saying regarding the poor man: "From his morsel [the lamb] would eat, and from his cup it would drink, and in his bosom it would lie, and it came to be as a daughter to him."—2 Samuel 12:1-3.]]

Thank you for this thoughtful comment! As a vegan myself, I know that God led me to this lifestyle, and I've been all the better for it (not to mention the animals!).

Think Again!-There was a cat who helped an injured dog by alerting the owner,And another one who saved a dog from a coyote attack,-Animals Rule!

Glad to hear it. A couple of cool cats.

Dogs do not think like humans. The dog was whining because he wanted to eat what was in the bag.
02:30 PM on 12/09/2011
I don't think you have a lot of experience with dogs. Most big dogs IF they wanted the kibble or a kitty snack wouldn't waste time whining. They would have shook or clawed the bag open. I have an Australian Shepherd that has the kill instinct for small prey. I also have a yellow lab that likes to play gently with cats, and whines when she is upset (but never for food). I could see her doing exactly what Reagan did. I don't think anything supports your claim Reagan wanted to eat the food or the kitens.

Ah, someone utterly unacquainted with dogs. Had the dog thought of what was in the bag as something yummy to eat, he would have ripped into it, not dragged it home.

May the person who did this terrible act be rewarded by knowing three fold the pain and fear to which they subjected their victims. May they see the horror of their actions every day of their miserable lives. May they know no comfort in this life or the next.

To the rescuers, canine and human, may you always be blessed every day of your life. May you know only peace and joy.

To any and all who read this, please make a donation, no matter how small to an animal charity this holiday season. You can help save a life too.

Animals are more compassionate than humans. We need to take lessons from animals. God has his on justice for people like this.

I'll remember that if I'm ever in waters where the salt water crocodile resides.
02:10 PM on 12/11/2011
At least the crocodile will only eat you if he is hungry. Humans will laugh while they torture you. They'll video it too and put it on UTube

I hope whoever did this to those poor little kitties dies a very slow, miserable, lonely and painful death
10:49 PM on 12/08/2011
If I could get my hands on them I could guarantee your hope or wish would come true... Already been in trouble before for "educatin" an animal abuser... have no problem going down that road again.

Great to hear I would do the same
