K-9 Murder Plot? Oklahoma Police Dog Died In Possible Kidnapping

Authorities in Oklahoma are mourning the loss of a beloved police K-9 that was found dead under suspicious circumstances Saturday.

"We sent him off to a vet," where they will perform a necropsy on the dog, Moore Police Officer Jeremy Lewis told The Huffington Post.

According to police, Bak, a 5-year-old German shepherd, was last seen Friday night in a kennel on the property of his handler, Sgt. Kerri Andrews. Someone removed the lock on the security pen and either took the dog or allowed him to escape, police said.

"Someone let him out, but we don't know who," Lewis said. "We are still investigating."

A police officer found Bak's remains the following day more than a mile away, near Interstate 35 in Moore. The location was within the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area. According to Lewis, there was obvious trauma to Bak's body.

For three years, Bak worked for the police department, tracking suspects, conducting building searches and sniffing out narcotics. He was one of two K-9s on the force and was considered a member of Andrews' family, police said.

"It's kind of hard to explain unless you've been in the situation. The bond between the handler and the dog is remarkable. They realize when the officer puts on his uniform, they go to work. When he comes home and takes off his uniform, they revert back to a family dog," US Police Canine Association National Executive Director Russ Hess told The Huffington Post.

While police are still trying to determine what exactly happened to Bak, authorities do suspect foul play.

"[He] was inside a kennel, inside a backyard, inside a gated neighborhood, so someone basically had to let him out of three things," Lewis said.

It is not uncommon for someone to target a police K-9, but Russ said it occurs less today than it has in years past.

"When we first started getting involved with dogs finding narcotics, there were several cases where dogs who found large stashes of narcotics had bounties put on them," Russ said.

According to Lewis, police are not aware of anyone who wanted to harm Bak. If a suspect is identified, he or she will be charged. Causing the death of a police dog in Oklahoma is a felony offense.

"The K-9s are considered an officer, but they are still an animal," Russ said. "Most states consider inflicting harm on a police animal, and that includes horses, with an increased penalty. It is not the same penalty as killing a human being. There is a distinction."

Anyone with information on Bak's disappearance and death is asked to contact Moore police at 405-793-5171.

I feel that the police use k9's as personal bullet detectors. Send in the dog so he gets shot first...

RIP, K-9

As a kid, I lived across the street from a K-9 officer and his family. He really was a terrific dog, and a real sweetie when 'off the clock.'
RIP Bak.

Sad story, but why didn;t the dog attack whoever cut the lock off the kennel? Did he know the person or are they so well trained they won't attack unless given the signal?

The dogs are generally trained quite well. They don't pay any mind to people who walk up and pet them.

It was a common event to have military dogs with a price on their heads during the Viet Nam War. These dogs found cashes of weapons, explosives, tunnels, and contraband of all types in the villages and on junks and sampans. The price for a dead U.S. military dog was about 5 to 10 bags of rice.

Here at home it is known that especially drug scent dogs can have contracts out against them and their handlers.

I'm a bit surprised that this K-9 stayed outside at night. The usual routine for a K-9 living at the Handler's home is that the dog lives in the house with the family. The yard kennel is a place for the dog to be outside when necessary to allow for visitors or family projects.

Condolences to Officer Lewis and Bak's other friends. Such a sad story.

I hope those responsible for Bak's death face the full force of the law.

I think the punishment should be no different than killing a human officer. I guess that sounds harsh, but it's an attack on the police like any other.
(I'm against the death penalty in all cases, though, so maybe that helps me sound less bloodthirsty in this case.)

Dogs give unconditional love and devotion. I would hate to think that this animal's death was due to neglect. There's just no excuse. Canines give their lives for their owners/handlers without a second thought.
01:26 PM on 12/06/2011
I don't see how it can be a result of neglect. This was a working dog, don't you think someone would have seen signs on neglect?

Well when I said neglect, it was in reference to maybe someone leaving his kennel unlocked or not keeping him in the house if there was a chance that he was a target.

This is one sad story. Don't tell us that a drug dealer committed this heinous crime against this beautiful pooch! He should have never been left unatttended, even in a gated community. Drug dealers are found everywhere nowadays. Bak died as a brave officer of the law. Let's hope his killer is found...and don't be too surprised as to who it is!
03:40 PM on 12/06/2011
I suspect this was someone who had it in for the owners/handlers. The dog was IN a kennel, IN a fenced backyard apparently, and IN a gated community. Whoever it was knew exactly what they were looking for.

RIP Bak, you should have a hero's funeral complete with the 21 gun salute. I have had my dog murdered before so I know how much this hurts. I always suspected who did it but could never prove it. He did have a nice funeral though and my other dogs and neighborhood dogs, the family cat and the neighbor kids goldfish all attended.

I made a comment on this earlier, but I need to add something: To the handler, I know your pain. I lost my dog Happy under similar circumstances. My advice to you is to just allow yourself a chance to have a good cry. Do it when you are along. Just thank of Bak and let it all out in a really good cry. That will help you find peace, and it will bring some closure.
