Obama Urges Congress To Extend Payroll Tax Cut (VIDEO)

12/ 5/11 05:08 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama pressured Republicans in Congress on Monday to extend a payroll tax cut, saying the economic recovery is "still fragile" and middle class families need the money.

"My message to Congress is this: Keep your word to the American people and don't raise taxes on them right now. Now's not the time to slam on the brakes. Now's the time to step on the gas," Obama said at the White House. He said despite a decline in the unemployment rate to 8.6 percent in November, "our recovery is still fragile" and the nation's economy could be hurt by economic turbulence in Europe.

The president has been seeking an extension and expansion to the payroll tax cut that will expire at the end of the year. The White House says taxes on the average family would increase by $1,000 if the cuts are not extended.

To make its point, the White House went so far as to put up a countdown clock during spokesman Jay Carney's briefing to show when middle-class taxes would go up "if Congress doesn't act."

Some Republicans in Congress support the extension but the parties have been split on how to pay for it. Obama noted that House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell have expressed support for the extension, adding, "I hope the rest of their Republican colleagues come around."

Brendan Buck, a Boehner spokesman, said there was widespread support for extending the payroll tax cuts but if "the president wants to make progress he should insist that Senate Democrats remove the job-killing small business tax hike from their partisan proposal."

Senate Democrats have rolled out a compromise that would drop Obama's proposal to award the tax cut to employers, bringing the cost of the plan down.

Obama also said for Congress to end its work this year without extending unemployment insurance would be a "terrible mistake" and leave "1.3 million Americans out in the cold."

The White House has called for an extension of benefits that can cover up to 99 weeks for the long-term jobless. State unemployment insurance programs guarantees coverage for six months, but Congress approved additional benefits in 2008. Expiration of those payments would mean an average loss of nearly $300 in weekly income for more than 1 million households in January.

he can speak out of both sides of his mouth almost simultaneously........gotta raise taxes , gotta extend tax cuts..............setting up policy , so that it will fail , so the BLAME can be cast - in order to try to win an election.............is really another FAILED policy to begin with.......

So allowing a temporary tax cut to expire is NOT a tax increase? Actually, I agree with you. Hopefully you will not change your opinion when the same gridlock preventing an extension of this program causes the temporary Bush Obama tax cuts to expire. Our grandchildren cannot afford more borrow and spend policies from either party.

I continue to believe that Obama is a straw-man for some very powerful and not very nice folks. In my opinion, these folks are trying to bring this nation down, destroy our economic system and replace the system with a one-world government. Do you folks want to live in mud huts so that these folks can equalize the world's population needs and wants? If we are smart, we will vote Obama and his Band of Merry Commies out of office ASAP.

They are all strawmen. This is what happens when you let big business buy your politicians with legal bribes.

Yes, his life and his presidency is one big secret event. Have any of his mother's relatives stepped forward to claim him as a relative? Have not seen them attending Thanksgiving at the White House. Now his so-called father's relatives have been caught in this nation illegally. Did the Obama's have them for Thanksgiving at the White House?

What about his lineage? Seems pretty clear to me.

Fox Breaking News: The Tea Party insists on 2% Tax Increase for the middle class.
02:37 PM on 12/06/2011
The Tea Party is on record (VOTING RECORD) opposing Obama's tax cuts for the middle class. Vote all baggers out of office now.
02:34 PM on 12/06/2011
The Tea Party is officially finished. Tea Party opposition to Obama's tax cut for the niddle class will become the basis for the 2012 Campaign. The voting record of the Tea Party on this issue is proof positive that the Tea Party is anti-middle class.

This guy isn't even trying to hide his socialist-communist leaning any more. He is a divider of this nation by class, by race, by sex. He is touting a tax increase on job producers so that jobs will tend to diminish even more than today and more will have to take hand-outs from, you guessed it, the government. Do we all want to be slaves to government? How can this man stand and lie, over and over again? This economy is Obama's. He has taken over so many functions of the private sector that this government is no longer affordable. He says we don't want to be beholden to foreign powers, well Mr. President, you are borrowing $0.40 of every dollar you handout and mostly from China. Dumb, dumb, and even dumber.
04:19 PM on 12/06/2011
So running a deficit is a communist activity? Tax increases on what job producers? What private functions has Obama taken over? Banks? Autos? Insurance? Nope those were part of TARP under Bush. Was he, in you opinion, a communist? If Obama is a communist why is he trying to sell the US interest in those industries?

Obama has had three years to show leadership and turn this nation's economy around. Instead he preferred to push an unsustainable health care plan and to encourage more stringent regulations on oil, gas, coal, agriculture, etc. None of his stimuli were effective job creators. Van Jones, self-proclaimed communist advisor, pushed "cash for clunkers" through, dried up the used car market and then left in disgrace. This administration, from top to bottom are manned by really dumb folks. Wonder if all democrats are just plain dumb?

Pay roll tax cut, what a joke. You still end up paying the tax at the end of the year when you do your final tax return in April. It comes down to pay me now or pay me later. nothing is free.
02:38 PM on 12/06/2011
Bullcrap. baggers can't add or subtract.
04:37 PM on 12/06/2011
Read the fine print. They will take less taxes out of your weekly check. At the end or the year you are taxed on the total amount you made. If the rate on the tax brackets don't change,{ which they won't, they always go up } you are still paying the full amount of tax on the money you made.
04:49 PM on 12/06/2011
Sounds like you are confused. This is not about a change in federal income tax withholding which would not affect your actual federal income taxes owed at the end of the year. This is about a temporary reduction in Social Security tax rates. The temporary tax rate reduction does reduce the amount paid for Social Security on wage income. If you make $10,000 in wages it would save you $200 on your Social Security payments.
05:09 PM on 12/06/2011
You are correct. I was confused. Thanks for setting me straight.

The Tea Party will black any attempt by Obama to give a tax cut to the middle class. The only thing the Tea Party has planned for the middle class is a tax increase.

his gameplan is to have everyone at the poverty level don't you read alinsky???
02:14 PM on 12/06/2011
This isn't a tax cut, it's redistribution of wealth. The POTUS wants to extend the payroll tax cut for some and pay for it with a tax increase on others. The TP wants no tax increases.
