Pew's 'Internet As Diversion And Destination' Study Confirms Many Of Us Go Online For No Reason

Internet As Diversion And Destination

By BARBARA ORTUTAY   12/ 2/11 12:28 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- For anyone who needed official word, a new study confirms that many of us – and the majority of young adults – go online for no good reason at all.

The report from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project found that on any given day, 53 percent of 18 to 29 year-olds go online just to have fun or pass time.

That should explain all those kitten videos.

The report finds that the amount of time people spend tooling around on the Web doing nothing corresponds with age. Only 12 percent of people over 65 say they went online the previous day for no particular reason. Of those aged 50 to 64, the study found 27 percent answered yes to the same question.

In all, 58 percent of all adults said that they use the Internet to pass time or have fun at least occasionally. Of adults who use the Internet, nearly three-quarters surf the Web for no reason.

The survey didn't define "fun," so people could interpret it broadly. For some people, gossip blogs might be fun, for others, they're serious research.

Pew is releasing the study on Friday. The phone survey was conducted from July 25 to Aug. 26 among 2,260 American adults.

REALLY????
People go online just to (quote): "have fun or pass time"?
Wow, that's amazing!!!!

LOL I wonder what the budget was on this study.
Because if it was more than a buck, it was money flushed down the toilet.

The results of this are akin to British study a few years ago -- which actually cost English taxpayers over a million dollars -- which asked the question: "Why do people like sex?"

At which point -- I kid you not -- the stunning and earth-shaking conclusion that the study came to (again, for the low low cost of only $1 MILLION) was "people like sex because it feels good."

Seriously, how do I get in on these study gravy trains?
Is there a form I have to fill out or a night course I have to take?

For this they needed a study?

For the most part, I go online because the footage I am editing is rendering or formatting or uploading or something and I have 5 minutes to kill and I get bored really easy. Also do quite a bit of work online, but divert to Twitter or here for amusement, as a little break...

When I had a job, I used the internet to pay bills and play games. Now I use it to find that illusive job and to find articles I can comment on. It seems that my unemployment status has rendered me very opinionated on many subjects, whereas before I really didn't care about things like why we go online or why a kid was suspended from school for calling his teacher "cute". It's a whole new world when you don't have a job!

I usually look at porn online when I'm not dispensing gems of wisdom on HP. At my age I don't get to see a lot of naked women in real life (at least, none that I would WANT to see), but there are untold scads of images and movies online.

There are studies (need link here) that show that access to pornographic material may actually reduce the rate of sex crimes-----kind of a 'blowing off steam' effect (I HOPE I don't have to be explicit here)-----so the tiresome religious claim that porn 'hurts people' just doesn't hold water.

About the picture, that's what cats do, all right!

As for me, there's a couple of sites that I read every day (HP, IMDb, Vesti). I go to Wikipedia because I like seeing which languages a page has. For example:

Summis desiderantes affectibus has corresponding pages in Czech, Dutch, German, Italian, Latin, Polish, Russian, Slovene and Swedish.

Subduction (get ready for this) has corresponding pages in Bosnian, Breton, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician, Georgian, Haitian, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian (bokmal), Occitan, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Serbo-Croat, Simple English, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

Do you watch The Big Bang Theory? I think you would enjoy it. Intelligent humour.

Big Bang Theory is "intelligent humour"??? Really????
I think your standards of "intelligent" are pretty low.
