As part of Twitter's year-end review series, the microblogging site is looking back on the top trends, topics and events of the past year. On December 5, Twitter released a roundup of the year's hottest topics. This marks the site's third installment in its review of 2011. So far Twitter has noted the year's top stories, most popular new members, in addition to the year's hottest tpoics; only two more installments remain.

According to a post on the Twitter Blog,

The list of Hot Topics and Top Hashtags charts the keywords that rose the fastest in conversation over the course of the year. This reveals what grabbed our attention most dramatically in 2011, and which events, inventions, changes and ideas made the deepest impression on us.

Among the topics discussed are food and drink (McDonald's McLobster sandwich scored the top spot on that list), actors (Charlier Sheen #winning), tech (Mac App Store) and many, many more.

Take a look at the slideshow (below) to see 2011's list of the top 7 most popular hashtags, concerning topics that range from celebrity news and world events to Twitter's unique catchphrases. Read on to view Twitter's list of the year's top stories, which aren't necessarily the most retweeted Tweets of the year but are stories that are iconic within Twitter's own history. Adam Wilson (@theleanover) is the most consistently entertaining Tweeter out there. Usually I stop following people if they tweet more than a few times a day. But when Wilson stopped using Twitter for a week I was seriously bummed. Follow him! He's hilarious.

#OWS #OccupyWallStreet — Or, Twitter has a strangely cozy relationship with the US government and like every social technology is also owned, controlled and profited from by an unaccountable group of "private" individuals.

Social technology should be democratic. That means media (and education and health care and food and housing). Oh, and Twitter.

I think it was HuffPo (although possibly another site) that reported that when Occupy Wall Street was really started taking off, the hashtag was getting way more new tweets than many of the top 10 that twitter was listing and yet twitter never had it on their top trending list. I'm not sure they ever have.

Glad to see there were some serious posts in there - wish there was one on the murder of entire dolphin families at the Cove in Taiji, Japan.

Twitter censors things the government or the corporate elite dont want you to see. #OWS #OCCUPYWALLST screw twitter. They are part of the problem.

Why do you think they stopped at 7? Didn't want #OWS #Occupy or #NotIntendedtobeafactualstatement to show up?

I can't help but notice the conspicuous absence of #ows or #OccupyWallStreet.
