Pusuke Oldest Dog

The world's oldest dog passed away on Monday afternoon at his home in Sakura, Japan.

Pusuke, a male cross-breed, was recognized as the oldest dog in the world by Guinness Book of World Records in December last year, reports ABC News.

Pusuke was 26-years-old when he died, reports the Kyodo News. Born in March, 1985, the dog had just over three months to go until its next birthday.

That's somewhere between 118 to 185 human years.

Pusuke died Monday afternoon just five minutes after Ms Shinohara, his owner, had returned home from a walk.

According to MSN India, the 42-year-old housewife said, "I think [Pusuke] waited for me to come home."

MSNBC notes that a 28-year-old beagle from the U.S. had previously held the record for oldest dog in the world, though it died in 2003.

The oldest dog to have ever lived is reportedly a 29-year-old sheepdog who lived in Australia.

It doesn't matter about the age of a pet being in the book of records because the age doesn't matter - it's the love that the pet gave to its owner and the owner's family. It just doesn't matter. Their love mattered and living pets' love matters. And the love the owner and family has for their pet. It may sound strange but, to me, animals are better than people. Pet or not. But especially pets. They do not judge nor do they keep a grudge or are disloyal. They love unconditionally, as people should to animals. I know it has nothing to do with the article, but I feel that if any harm comes to an animal by the hands of a human being, that human being should be severely punished! Too many states just give the person a proverbial "slap on the wrist" and that's that. Any animal has feelings also! They hurt, fear, and love the way we do. They are always there for you and they have nothing but love, trust, and loyalty for you. It makes me cry when animals are hurt, especially pets by their owners. That is why I donate to both The Humane Society and SPCA. Please donate to these charities to help the animals that are hurt by humans! Give them another chance at life and love!!! Thank you!

I dred the day my 13 year old constant companion passes. She is a rescue and has been with me since she was a year old. Last year she had to have x-rays and an ultrasoud for a suspected pacrease problem and shockingly the x-rays showed she was filled with buck shot! Hard to imagine what kind of human being would shoot a puppy and dump it.

Some kind of Husky mix? Looks friendly enough.

Probably a Shiba Inu mix. The face and overall size look very Shiba-ish.

What are pet articles doing the Green section?

Pets are not Green they consume resources that could go to the poor of the world? How many $2,000 registered dogs are there in the USA that need feed and expensive vet visits. A family in a 3rd world country could live on those costs.

Pets fulfill a valuable role, creating overall psychological and mental health for owners. Funding birth control options , including contraceptives, would be a more effective solution to help curb suffering and starvation in poor countries.

Pets over people !!

"What are pet articles doing in the Green section?" I have posted many times with the same question. Pets need there own section.

I have never had a dog stick around after 15 (possibly had enough of me); I wish I knew what Pusuke ate, he was a beautiful pup and I'm glad he passed quietly at home.

It is incredible that he was able to live such a long life. Rest in peace Pusuke.

I've never had a dog live that long but I did have a 21 year old Siamese cat and he was the luckiest cat I know. He was spoiled beyond belief. I was there when he was born, I was 10 years old. He was the only kitten in the litter that came to me. I was there when he passed too. He lost the ability to walk and the doctor said it was a spinal tumor so we had to put him to sleep. I held him until he was gone and then for a long while after. You get lost when you have had an animal that long and they have to go. You expect to see them everywhere you look. It is really like losing a member of the family.

I also had a cat that lived to 21 years. Oddly enough, Hoover was a Japanese Bobtail that I rescued as a tiny kitten when I lived in Japan.

Its so funny to watch a senior dog. They get into their routines and schedules and you have to follow it to a tea or they become restless and upset. I have a 17 year old and every time I think this is it, he peps up and proves me wrong. Love him dearly but he has put a crimp in being able to travel.

Yes my little boy gets frustrated he use to love his jogs, chasing the cat, following me up and down stairs all while blind. Even though deaf as well his sense of smell is amazing he will find a grain in a meal.

I know what you mean. We had a blind Basset Hound and his sense of smell served him well. We had 1/2 acre and he could zone right in to the doggy door.

Im surprised the dog made it that long in Japan..without being served on some dinner menu..you know the asians have no regard for animals..they will eat anything that isnt nailed down..
12:55 PM on 12/07/2011
You are confusing Korea with Japan. And while you're commenting on what different ethnic races eat let's not forget the Donner party.
01:32 PM on 12/07/2011
Exactly so. The Japanese I know are very fond of dogs and are conscientious pet owners.

Yes when my partner was on business in Asia he had to say Dog is friend in our country (Aussie) when they told him to eat it.

My Peek-a-poo named Rosie was 18 years old when she passed. I miss her very much. Her mate, my poodle named Charlie passed away at 14 years old. Now I have a sweet Shi-tzu named Timothy who keeps me company. May Pusuke RIP along with my Rosie and Charlie et al.

I'm confused. At the end of the article it talked about a 28 year old AND a 29 year old dog, but yet they are saying that this 26 year old dog is the record holder....did I miss something???
11:57 AM on 12/07/2011
They are talking about the CURRENT record holder. The 29 year old dog was the oldest AT THE TIME, died then the 28 year old dog was next, died, then the 26 year old dog.

Ohhhh lol, it is okay kvkop I was thinking the same thing. Thanks jfrane.
