BYU-Idaho Dress Code Prohibits Skinny Jeans: Report

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/07/11 02:53 PM ET Updated: 12/08/11 11:17 AM ET

In October, the New York Times published a fashion article entitled, "Young Mormons Find Ways to Be Hip." In it, Mormon twenty-somethings talked about how "geek-chic glasses," plaid and even selvedge jeans (that's serious stuff!) are finally becoming typical attire for the religious crowd.

Not so fast, Brigham Young University-Idaho responded. The Mormon university, which is owned and run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, happens to be reiterating its dress code policy, lest hipster kids with facial hair begin to overrun campus.

As Gawker reported, BYU-I seemed to be tightening up its honor code guidelines by banning all types of "form-fitting clothing," including -- gasp! -- skinny jeans.

Independent BYU newspaper The Student Review reported on the apparently updated dress code, identifying a sign on campus that read, "No skinny jeans."

One student, Rachel Taylor, quoted in the paper said the skinny jean crackdown has come recently as more BYU-I kids adopt such denim styles, including the worst offender: jeggings. Writes The Student Review:

Taylor said she knew of one student who had been asked to leave the university's testing center because she was wearing skinny jeans.

But Kevin Miyasaki, BYU-I Student Services and Activities Vice President, clarified that there is not a skinny jeans ban per se. In an email to Gawker, he wrote, "We have not identified 'skinny jeans' as a specific violation of the dress and grooming standard."

He added, "The Testing Center has not made any new standard, nor has there been a ban of a particular piece of clothing."

So no ban. Butttt it still seems like those slim-cut J. Brands you've been hiding under your lofted BYU-I dorm bed are a no-no. Which is a good thing, too -- Mormonism-observing and Brooklyn-dwelling Britain Baker told the New York Times that Mormons tend to hold lots of dessert parties (in lieu of the drinking parties they can't have).

Such parties can put one's sartorial tendencies in danger. "Because of all the dessert parties," Britain told the Times, "skinny jeans can be a bitch."

So new strategy for BYU-I! Feed the kids so much dessert that they can't even get their skinny jeans on. Problem solved.

CORRECTION: Previously, this article incorrectly stated the university in question to be Brighman Young University, not Brigham Young University-Idaho. We have corrected the error.

Harry Reid is then a cult member in charge of the US Senate.

What do you say about that?

Ehm, did you actually read that article? Despite the title, it defends Mormonism and all the 24 reasons.

Oh, the Mormon Factor is a PRO LDS organisation. Got it.

I attend BYUI. If you read the original article, and talk to any authority on campus, you;d know that skinny jeans are allowed. It was just one person at the testing center that interpreted "form fitting" to mean skinny jeans. That person didn't have the authority to do that, which has been addressed. The Testing Center has always been super uptight about the dress code, and it overstepped its bounds. Now it knows better. But don't mock a religion for the mistake that one person made. Yahoo, hire some real journalists instead of gossiping girls.

So, what happened to the original version of this article where you mocked the cheerleaders for the team uniforms they wore? This makes numerous times that HuffPo has changed articles after initial leades.

Good luck finding any other kind of pants to buy. All they sell in the store are skinny jeans, super-skinny jeans, and leggings. And on another note, snug clothing keeps you warmer in the winter.

instead of a dress code they should have more mirrors around...and incourage people to take a good look at their appearance...of course how many of us can admit how badly we really dress ?

It's unbelievable that people hate on others for actually having more discipline and conviction than them. It's mind boggling. Get a life and stop judging people that clearly have higher standards than you, you hypocrites.

You lost me at "stop judging people that clearly have higher standards than you." While not "judgemental" certainly a somewhat arrogant statement. Your definition of higher standards might seem to some as not a higher standard at all, but regressive and restrictive mandates. Sure it's all about choice - choice of religion and where you go to school etc- but others have the right to their opinions.

Perhaps saying that you have higher standards is creating the hate. Your comment reeks of hypocrisy, 'I can judge you but you cannot judge me'. Just sayin'.

What a rip! Mormons can't have any fun.
07:16 PM on 12/09/2011
Mormons have plenty of fun. I agree with them on a lot of things. Drinking and getting stoned is stupid and I would rather not have a unwanted baby and would rather have a stable relationship than have sex with someone I might not even be with the next day.

A culture obsessed with "modesty" allows its cheerleaders to wear a second-skin outfit? Typical hypocrisy....

Who cares Mormons are notorious for restricting everything, alcohol, porn, short skirts, caffeine!, etc., as long as they stay in their little Mormon pockets and keep their money to themselves ( i.e. prop 8) I don't care what they do. Oh and by the way, guess what city has the highest porn consumption... Utah!

Quote from BYU Idaho's facebook page: "Wondering if skinny jeans are allowed on campus? They are. BYU-Idaho's longstanding dress & grooming standards promote principles of modesty and restrict formfitting clothing, but skinny jeans are not singled out or prohibited. In addition, the Testing Center issue reported in Scroll has been corrected and is no longer in force."

It goes on there, too. Perhaps you've heard of polygamy?

Cite one instance of polygamy happening on BYU's campus in the last 100 years. I don't love the school but I love ridiculous comments even less.

When a style hits this crowd it's time for a rethink, the hipsters have probably moved on.
