David Axelrod: Mitt Romney Is A Martini Party Member Wanting Tea Party Cred

Mitt Romney Tea Party

First Posted: 12/07/11 06:57 PM ET Updated: 12/08/11 08:21 AM ET

In more direct terms than usual, a top adviser for President Barack Obama's reelection campaign charged former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney with being a lifelong member of the country's elite who is concerned principally with serving members of his own class.

David Axelrod, the president's top communications aide, declined to call the potential Republican nominee an "elitist" outright, instead saying that he would let this publication make that determination. But the descriptors he applied to Romney left little doubt about how the Obama campaign has decided to brand its still-likely opponent.

"The Republican Party has split into two parties. You have got the Tea Party and the martini party," Axelrod said, at a briefing of reporters in New York City, sponsored by Bloomberg View. "By orientation, Romney is more of the martini party set. He's spent the last six years banging on the door of the other group trying to win admission, abrogating one fundamental principle after another to try and prove his mettle to them. But they are just not buying."

A prepared line delivered in his opening remarks, the mention of a so-called martini party was not Axelrod's only attempt to cast Romney as upper crust. Pointing to the former governor's proposal to slash capital gains tax rates in order to help the middle class, he suggested that Romney himself might "lend his accountant to help them keep track of their vast capital gains."

"I mean, it's a joke," he said, concluding that the move would not help the middle class much at all.

Turning Romney into a caricature of the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans is hardly an innovative twist. Romney has been portrayed similarly during all of his campaigns, from his first run for office (the 1994 Senate race against Ted Kennedy) to his most recent (the 2008 presidential campaign). His personal wealth, estimated at $250 million, and previous job history, as head of the private equity firm Bain Capital lend themselves to the attack line.

That said, Axelrod's remark did cap off a day in which issues of class dominated the conversation. Hours before Axelrod addressed reporters, Romney told a crowd at the Republican Jewish Coalition forum in Washington D.C. that the president "seeks to replace our merit-based society with an entitlement society" where "everyone receives the same or similar rewards." Asked to respond to the martini party shot, Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul sent HuffPost the following.

"This is Barack Obama's America: More people than ever before go to sleep each night without a job. More people go to sleep each night on food stamps. And more people go to sleep each night with their homes facing foreclosure. Americans are wondering how they will make ends meet – that is Barack Obama's legacy – and his response is to blame someone else."

Lost in the scuffle was the candidate who currently stands a better chance, according to most public opinion polls, of being the Republican nominee. During Axelrod's briefing, which lasted longer than an hour, Newt Gingrich remained a secondary topic. The former House Speaker's name did come up -- at one point, Axelrod said that "he could be the nominee" -– and his unexpected climb up the polls was analyzed. But it was clear that the president's political advisers either see Gingrich as unlikely to hold on to his lead or view him as the candidate they most want to emerge and are therefore refraining from attacking him sharply.

"I think at the fundamental core, his economic theory is very much the same as all the other Republicans," Axelrod said of Gingrich. "And so, it may be delivered in a more flamboyant package, it may come embroidered with self-puffery, but it is still essentially the same debate."

Asked if the Obama campaign was shifting focus or resources to accommodate Gingrich's current position in the primary polls, he added: "We will have all the information that we need to make sure those choices are clear, and we certainly are going to monitor what is being said. In the speaker's case, that requires a lot of monitoring, because he says a lot."

Lol ... so the ONLY thing the Romney campaign has to answer to the FACT that Romney is an elitist (NOT because he belongs to the 1% wealthiest Americans, but because his policies would ONLY benefit those 1%) is ... that they hope that people will forget that Bush handed him an economy with an unemployment rate in free all, that Obama already stabilized it in 2009, and that since Jan. 2010 the GOP are  Read More...

Yes, Mitt Romney lies and has no clue what he is talking about. I heard him badmouthing John Kerri and Obama before with no source to support his claims. He talks like a robot and doesn't permit anyone asking him questions. He can't handle the truth. People like Romney and Rick Santorum should go back to school to learn something about people skills. Newt may be old and looks like a roasted marshmallow, but stabbing him in the back by another republican??

Reality Check:

The country is run by the Rich, for the Rich and has been for decades.

The Constitution has been “amended” to allow “Electoral Votes” to override the
“Popular” peoples votes when the politicians decide to apply it.

The “Middle Class” is slowly being eroded; America will become a 2 class country, poor and rich.

The much toted “Tea Party” politicians elected to Congress and the Senate immediately joined the Republicans.

All we know of any politician in office or campaigning for office is what we read/hear in the media.

We need a “William Wallace” as President, clamp down on the bribes (favors) to politicians and prosecute the people who bribe and accept bribes to and in government.

American Citizens have to reclaim their country and their rights as citizens.

I've always maintained that the Republicans have no platform upon which to run. The only thing they can tell their constituents is, "we tried to do everything in our power to obstruct, not cooperate, even did those things against your own interest. We've used Palin, Bachmann, FOX and others to spread rhetoric and propaganda to your listening ears, with the hope of getting our evil feet back in that White House."

Now for your continued reading pleasure, I offer the following from the horses mouth: In an interview with Bret Baier of Fox News, McConnell was asked about a charge made by Democrats that the Republicans are purposefully sabotaging the economy for political gain in 2012. McConnell seemed to admit to the charge, saying “Well that’s true”

Saul overshot badly. The complaint was that Romney is beholden to the 1%, not tea partiers. How will her attacking Obama, viciously blaming him for everything but the weather, speak to that?

Andrea Saul must have her teeth filed to little points by now.

Republicans want us to focus on he said she said instead of excatly what their past performances did or what they would do if we elect them. Youll notice no republican supporter hear ever mention what the republicans did in the last 30 years that the majority of americans prosperd from. Never mention what they would do to lower unemployment and why it would work never explain how cutting the goverment work force lowers unemployment never show us how the existing tax cuts for billionares has created jobs in the last three years never talk about how cutting enviromental regulations couldnt possably cost us more than we save never demonstrate how cutting revenue before cuttung the need for revenue lowered our need for revenue Iam for what worhs not some proven failed Ideology when they come up with somthing that has a good chance of working then ill look at them carefully .

Romney was "To the Manor Born" and he is as 1 percent as it is possible to be. His campaign slogan should be "Hey, I'm just like you: I was born on an estate, too."

As for this statement: This is Barack Obama's America: More people than ever before go to sleep each night without a job. More people go to sleep each night on food stamps. And more people go to sleep each night with their homes facing foreclosure. Americans are wondering how they will make ends meet – that is Barack Obama's legacy – and his response is to blame someone else."

He is flat wrong. That is Junior's legacy. He spent us into poverty while protecting his rich cronies and allowing deregulation to happen, even if unofficially. But then, it's the Republicans job to defecate in the house and blame the dog. In this case, the "dog" is Obama (who should have been calling the republicans on the carpet from day one instead of rolling over and playing dead for them time after time).
10:10 AM on 12/08/2011
Jr. left a mess..

And Obama has been able to clean it up some. The pitiful (8% approval rating) Republican House is holding up the process. Still jobs are up. And it's a full time job for Americans to keep Republicans from destroying the middle class. No more sleep for progressives. We must vote in every election.

The American people don't need a President that can't decide what color socks to put on when they wake up in the morning, what is Romney going to do when he gets that 3 am call tell them to call back two hours later when he decides what to do?

Axelrod doing crazy talks - elitism, martini, whatever. The struggling working class whom each 24/7 wake up to face all the challenges of surviving or not surviving - fear of losing employment, fear of how to pay mortgage, rent, and basic needs, or fill up the car for work, very, very, very expensive college education/on the other hand, the non survivors, loss of job, home, car, college kid have to stop university attendance, - all of these financial activities are controlled by his tribe. Axelrod is a hypocrite for political gain- forked tongue and duplicity is the game. I have never seen where voting becomes a brain twisting activity - no honest candidate, they are all the same, look for all the reasons why America is bankrupt, the "do not look at me", blame the struggling working class - to GOP's they are all losers, to DEM's, they deserve crumbs to maintain their loyalty. Disgusting.

if #2 he would defend it vigorously, at all times instead of ignoring questions about it.

if #3 he NEVER would of THOUGHT or SAID "my FIVE adult sons are helping WA r effort by helping me get elected President"...or NEVER would of THOUGHT or SAID " i want a VP like D. Ch eney"

Family always should come first and God is above country, so it should come second... The country is only temporay and will fade away in time..... Romney only wants what is best for the country no matter what order it falls in.... Newt LeRoy has been married 3 times and even served divorce papers while one was on her death bed. He was also sanctioned 300.000 dollers while Speaker of the House.... What Obama has done is endless, taking from you and I with every oportunity... So don't tell me about family, religion and country..... I have been married for 50 years, a Mormon all my life and served MY Country for 22 years.... Liberals, I will never understand them......
