Tim Tebow Debate: Bill Cosby Defends Tim Tebow, Broncos On YouTube (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/07/11 10:07 AM ET Updated: 12/07/11 10:55 AM ET

It seems like everybody is getting in on the "Great Tebow Debate" these days -- from retired NFL quarterbacks, to pop culture essayist Chuck Klosterman and now comedy legend Bill Cosby.

"Denver, we're old friends," Cosby said in a recent YouTube video announcing an upcoming comedy show he's doing in Denver in March 31st. But it's not just comedy Cosby talks about, he also comes to Tebow's defense.

Unsure about what the weather will be like come March in Denver, Cosby starts out jokingly, "call Tim Tebow and ask him for a great day."

"I like the way that team plays football," Cosby says in all seriousness about the Denver Broncos, "and all these people that don't understand it, tell them 'come on and beat them.'"

Cosby then says specifically about Tebow, "Tell Tim I said, don't worry about what all these people are saying about him, just look at old films of Joe Kapp, Minnesota Vikings."

Kapp, a former champion quarterback from the 60s and 70s who holds the unique distinction of being the only quarterback to play in the Super Bowl, Rose Bowl and Grey Cup. Kapp was known as a tough player who could take a hit and was a great leader, two qualities that fans also love about Tebow.

None of his followers would feel the same about him if he were gay, a Muslim, or an Atheist. Just saying.

People, People,People........ Cosby is trying to Educate you...... This Country has lost its "Morals", its Mind ,and its founding Beliefs. (See Congress, current Political Canidates, Most Athletes and the Kardashians-Reality TV crap). Tim Tebow is "Tim Tebow" nothing has changed. There is certainly nothing wrong in a man confirming his beliefs and relationship with the source he believes gives him strength and talent. Its refreshing to see,...... as appossed to "Snookie"stammering in a "drunken " stooper somewhere in the world , or any Kardashian Kaper to date. Celeberties ARE in fact "Role Models" ,like it or not. its about time we had a GREAT role model (Cosby & Tebow).Listen and learn "something "people ,it doesn't hurt.

I think what is being overlooked here is that this is a promo for his upcoming date in Denver. Celebs do this all the time. They call up the local morning show, plug their gig, then make a few comments about some local story, person or whatever in a attempt to connect with the people. Bill is simply using YouTube instead of the morning zoo show.

Tebow is strongly disliked because he loves Jesus. Once upon a time in this country, most of its citizens loved Jesus; they prefer NBA, NFL or MLB stars over Jesus. Critics of Tebow want two things to occur:
1. They want to see this Jesus lover fail.
2. They want folks to lose their faith in Jesus should Tebow fail or become just like one of the guys.

I’m pulling for him to make it because his critics are hoping that some type of embarrassing Tiger Woods, Herman Cain or Jerry Sandusky type of story comes to surface about this young man. He'll get better as he learns on the job; the boy is dangerous and his late in the game heroics remind me of Ken Stabler, Roger Steinbach, Joe Montana, John Elway and Brett Favre. I think Denver when they drafted him was hoping and praying for another version of John Elway; he might not be the passer than Elway was, but you'd better have a two score lead on Tim(with the Broncos having no time outs) in the closing minutes of the game or you'll lose.

Some people hate him for his style of play, running the run option, and it infuriates them that he wins despite playing a style that hasn't been seen for a while. Football purists. It's not just people who hate him for his religious sentiments, though it is true that many hate him for that reason.

Tebow is thrilling to watch, has a great attitude, seems like a great guy, and he's a winner, so hopefully most of the haters will get over it someday.

The guy is a winner who loves Jesus; they want this kid t fail so they can mock Jesus, Tim and the rest of us Christians who are made to feel like villains in this Christian founded country.

With no real weapons around him, the Broncos are focused on every play; they know that missing a tackle or turning the ball over can mean their doom. They, collectively, have become a better team and rallied around Tim. The fact that he doesn't throw interceptions in key to winning in the NFL. He is only going to get better with the on the job training.

Thanks for your reply

Why is everyone heaping such praise on Tebow when even he admits God is doing it. After every score big play or win he goes down on his knee and thanks God. Maybe Denver should give 10 million to churches and 10 thousand to Tebow.

Why are people like you so insulted when a player expresses gratitude?

Expressing gratitude has a time and a place. I'm Catholic and every night I give my thanks and say my prayers I don't need to go around and try to impose my will on everyone. We all know how he feels and really don't need him to keep telling us, after the first hundred or so times I think even the thickest among us get the picture. Does he really think his antics will impress God or maybe earn him more points on his day of reckoning? God sees all and knows all and I assume is intelligent enough to observe his deeds A simple kneel down and prayers of thanks should be enough.

I hope so. I see Chicago but NE?:) Let's hope!
07:04 PM on 12/08/2011
I don't see NE as invincible. The bills beat them. Control them from running up the score, stop Wes Welker or TE . Or have a shoot out, I think we can do that,....it's possible.
But 1st is Chicago. If we beat NE there will be a firestorm in the NFL.

Tebow -Gators scored 70 points in one game once.

The football field is no place to say mass. It's not Tebow's football talent that gets people pissed, it's the way he carries himself and the "I/Me? nature of his comments and actions. Other, and much better, pro QB's don't have this "dislike" problem, so it's certainly not jealousy. Fans don't dislike Manning, Brady or Brees, etc, the way they dislike Tebow. Which one of them comes out and says that they built a hospital. Nearly all athletes keep their charitable work quiet. Not this dude.

Slow news day.

I have always liked Bill Cosby, but what difference does it make what he thinks about Tebow and the Broncos?

I did, however, like Cosby's slam about asking Tebow for good weather in March.
That is the old Cosby humor.

Bill Cosby has common sense. Something most Libs are not familiar with.
11:32 AM on 12/08/2011
Tebow is definitely NOT a Christian. Why do I say this? Because he works on Sunday which is against the 10 commandments. He also prays in public which even Jesus has called hypocracy.
11:58 AM on 12/08/2011
In the Old Testament the Sabbath is actually Saturday, not Sunday.

As far as the Old Tetstament law is concerned (i.e. the Ten Commandments) there can be no way working on Sunday is a sin. The Law was fulfilled by Jesus, and we are free from needing to fulfill the law and make animal sacrifices to atone for our inability to keep the Law. Even Jesus literally worked on the Sabbath (Like 6:1-5).

However, it seems to me that the real issue is found in the heart of the purpose of the sabbath.

It was intended to be a time of rest, reflection, and many other purposes. Today I would think that the sin lies in being so busy that you have no time for your relationship with God. also I would say that you are sinning against your body (physically speaking) by being a work-a-holic by denying it the rest and play time that it needs to function in the way that God has intneded it to.

As far as your interpretation of Matthew 6:5, Jesus was not codemning public prayer . Rather it criticizes only that prayer in public that is motivated by a desire to show off. After all, if public prayer is not permitted, then just about every Christian service is seriously in error.

That is my two cents worth
12:29 PM on 12/08/2011
And a good two cents it is. I was looking to say something but I think you've said it well enough.
12:00 PM on 12/08/2011
Which one of the 10 Commandments says "Thou Shalt Not Work on the Sabbath Day?" Thou shall remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy doesn't say anything about not working. Jesus also tells Christians to go out and evangelize the world, which is exactly what Tebow is doing.

To Bill:

I had the same question/comment about "travdreams" comment.
thank you.
06:52 PM on 12/10/2011
You asked for it..but it is Old Testament and for Jews so it is not doctrinally applied to a Christain anyway.
It is the 3rd commandment

8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

People should read their bible before opening their idiot hole.
