Local Art Goes For $50 Or Less At 'Cheap Art Sale' (PHOTOS)

'Cheap Art Sale' Offers Local Masterpieces For Under $50 (PHOTOS)

WASHINGTON -- Those with bare walls and empty pockets should consider dropping by the Cheap Art Sale on Saturday, an event featuring the work of local artists all priced under $50.

Bekkah Barker founded the event a few years ago as part of artist collective District of Ladies, although for the last three the event has existed independently with proceeds going to various charities. Barker is an artist in her own right, but by her own admission is "a little shy" and rarely sells her own work.

"I do make my own things, but I've always focused more on organizing events," Barker said. It's also a hallmark of her day job as a registration specialist at the U.S. Copyright Office, where she facilitates the creativity of others.

"What I do at the copyright office isn't creative, but I register other people's creative work," she said.

This year, funds raised will go to support the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League. With the help of her co-organizer John Hardenbergh, Barker anticipates raking in at least $1,000 -- the amount brought in by last year's event.

Thirteen artists will show their work, which will include paintings, jewelry, screen-printed goods, photographic prints and more. Click through the below gallery for a sense of what to expect.

The event will be held at La Casa Community Center at 3166 Mount Pleasant St. NW from 1 to 5 p.m.
