NAUCALPAN DE JUAREZ, Mexico -- The spent batteries Americans turn in for recycling are increasingly being sent to Mexico, where their lead is often extracted by crude methods that are illegal in the United States, exposing plant workers and local residents to dangerous levels of a toxic metal.

Battery operated systems ARE a cleaner form of energy, if they are produced the right way. Recycling IS a cleaner way of obtaining raw materials if done correctly.

Your argument is a non sequitur. The problem isn't in batteries or in recycling, but on lack of environmental responsibility.

Sounds like you know nothing about batteries. This story is regarding lead batteries!!

Not only Mexico but must 3rd world countires have the same problem.. Mainly auto batteries are a big factor.
