Rick Perry Zings Mitt Romney For $10,000 Bet

First Posted: 12/11/11 09:39 AM ET Updated: 12/11/11 12:59 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney continued to catch flak Sunday morning for his casual offer to make a $10,000 wager during Saturday night's GOP presidential debate. Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace led his show with it, calling the exchange the defining moment of the debate.

"I was taken a little aback," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said when asked about the bet. He added that as he drove into the Iowa studio to film the interview, he didn't pass a single house whose residents looked like the type of people who could nonchalantly make a $10,000 bet. He said he didn't think "anyone in Iowa would even think that a ten thousand dollar bet was possible," and that Romney is "out of touch with the normal Iowa citizen."

On Saturday night, conservatives didn't hold back on jokes directed at the wealthy Romney. Jonah Goldberg of the National Review tweeted that "Romney promises that his butler will 'personally deliver' $10,000 check if he loses," which was quickly retweeted by RedState's Erick Erickson.

Jonathan Martin, who covers the GOP race for Politico, also pounced.

"Who among us doesn't wager $10K at a time?" he tweeted.

The only reason Rick didn't take the bet is he only had $8,000 on him.

You have to give Romney a break. You see, where he comes from the aristocracy normally doesn't talk to people, so they don't know what to say.

Good initial response Rick, but don't overdo it. You still won't climb in the polls.

It says folks still will not accept the fact that a black man is the president of the usa. Period.

that's always been my thought from the very beginning. It's like the Republicans are on a mission to "oust" the black guy....and that has superceded all other issues...hence we are where we are.

The Governor of Texas wouldn't take a $10K bet? He obviously has little faith in the veracity of the allegation he made.

He should have taken it on the condition that the winner donates the money to charity.

Do I see cracks starting to appear in Romney's armour? I think he is dead meat and republicans are of the mindset that if they are going to go down against Pre.Obama that they want to go down throwing bombs, and so they want a bomb maker and not a bomb diffuser. The strategy is simple. Win at all costs. If or not the American public can stomach a resurgence of this style of politics remains to be seen but keep in mind we voted for Pres. Bush twice.

I think it was meant as a joke albeit a bad one , but Perry has made himself look stupid several times now . Lets get serious, and get on with this. The man in the lead is not someone that most of us would want to have his finger on the button. As to N--- comments about the Palestines being invented , well aren't we? The only true Americans are Native Americans,so that must mean we are invented too.But this group needs to talk issues, we know they ALL have dirt.

You just don't get it do you? If I joke about a friendly bet with a co-worker it's usually "I'll bet you lunch" or wanna put 5 bucks on that?". Romney was flaunting his wealth, trying to bully Perry with his Money. That's what rich cowards do. A $10,000 bet is a "One Percenter's Term". It's meaning wasn't missed on a lot of people.

This bet is nothing, just something hiped up. The issue here is the policies, not Romneys money. Just listen to these tea party people, however Romney is not tea party. They are after your freedoms and your money , they want the rich to excel while they take your social security and medicare . Programs that people have given a big chunk out of their check each week. for all of their working years. Remember China does not have food stamps or unemployment checks ,according to Michelle Bachman this is to be admired. She should go over there and live as far as I am concerned. they do not want anybody to have health care, this is called socialism they say . The road these people would take us down would not be to our best interests.

It's one thing to have money, it's another to use it as a flaunt, when attempting to understand the average person, or even his butler. I'm sure we all would have a much better relationship with our butler hey?

Get real.

This is a non issue for me and just a distraction from the fact that we have real problems that need to be fixed. Lets get back to fining out how these candidates will fix the economy. I have no problem with the fact that Romney has money. He has earned it

I agree with you to a point. I would respectfully disagree with you on the point that "He earned it".
