The Top 13 Free iPhone Apps Of 2011: iTunes Rewind

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/11/11 08:08 PM ET   Updated: 12/11/11 10:24 PM ET

Apple in October announced that iPhone, iPad and iPod users had downloaded over 18 billion applications from the iTunes App Store since the service launched in 2008.

The company recently released its iTunes Rewind 2011 lists, counting down some of the most popular content of the year. The annual recap looks at Apple's favorite apps across 21 categories, including Books, Games, Music, News and more. Apple has also listed its own picks for the "App of the Year" and has selected its favorite downloadable content from iTunes, such as best musical artist, best nonfiction book and several others. (Click here to see what Apple selected as the best content of the year.)

As for users' overall favorite paid and free apps available on the iOS platform, gaming app "Angry Birds" topped the lists of paid and free iPad apps and took the number-one spot among paid iPhone apps. While the game also cracked the top four free iPhone apps of the year, it came in behind a social networking app, a music app and another game. View the slideshow (below) to see users' 13 favorite free iPhone apps from 2011. You can check out the iTunes Rewind to see the complete list of users' favorites from the year, too.

Android users needn't feel left out. When Google announced in early December that customers had downloaded 10 billion apps from the Android Market, the company celebrated by offering a sale: 10 apps for 10 cents each, every day until December 16. (Visit the Android Market's sale page to claim your discounted apps.)

Fascinating fact: Every one of these apps is available on the Android phone as well.

If these are the BEST apps for the iPhone, I have no regrets owning my Android phone.

SHHH - This is huffpo, there shall be no talk of android unless we're cutting it to shreds!!

Seriously though, any good app is going to be made for both devices. Best app on iphone is probably going to be the best app on android. Saying these are all the best on iphone is a bit like saying Firestone tires are better on a Chevy than on a Ford.

Just like the best selling music doesn't mean "best music," so does this list not represent the best in the app store. Just the most popular.

3 of them are Angry Birds games? Really?

What about Findmyiphone app? Shazam? Flashlight? HeyTell? Instagram?

Kind of a half-assed article if you asked me..

Kind of a half-assed product if you asked me. I can't believe all the hype about how wonderful all these phones/ipods are when 90% of their use is to play angry birds or write some sarcasm on twitter or facebook. Pandora, yeah, I can see it's usefulness, but the rest of the stuff could be run on a $5 electronic game. Me, my number one favorite app is the one that makes my phone make farting sounds. Thank you Apple for dumbing down America.
02:59 PM on 12/12/2011
I can appreciate your candor, however its the consumers that are developing/boasting about these farting apps, not Apple. People use these silly/fun apps cause they're easy/fun to use and makes for social interactions etc - but the real innovation that isn't always being talked about at the watercooler...

It's the ease and accuracy of the GPS, the safe alternative to texting/driving by using HeyTell, searching/purchasing off amazon/groupon/etc.

Just like in politics, all the crazy-ass ones get all the attention.
