Iran Drone Will Not Be Returned, Senior Commander Says

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran will not return a U.S. surveillance drone captured by its armed forces, a senior commander of the country's elite Revolutionary Guard said Sunday.

Gen. Hossein Salami, deputy head of the Guard, said in remarks broadcast on state television that the violation of Iran's airspace by the U.S. drone was a "hostile act" and warned of a "bigger" response. He did not elaborate on what Tehran might do.

"No one returns the symbol of aggression to the party that sought secret and vital intelligence related to the national security of a country," Salami said.

Iranian television broadcast video Thursday of Iranian military officials inspecting what it identified as the RQ-170 Sentinel drone.

Iranian state media have said the unmanned spy aircraft was detected over the eastern town of Kashmar, some 140 miles (225 kilometers) from the border with Afghanistan. U.S. officials have acknowledged losing the drone.

Salami called its capture a victory for Iran and a defeat for the U.S. in a complicated intelligence and technological battle.

"Iran is among the few countries that possesses the most modern technology in the field of pilotless drones. The technology gap between Iran and the U.S. is not much," he said.

Officers in the Guard, Iran's most powerful military force, had previously claimed that the country's armed forces brought down the surveillance aircraft with an electronic ambush, causing minimum damage to the drone.

American officials have said that U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that Iran neither shot the drone down, nor used electronic or cybertechnology to force it from the sky. They contend the drone malfunctioned. The officials had spoken anonymously in order to discuss the classified program.

But Salami refused to provide more details of Iran's claim to have captured the CIA-operated aircraft.

"A party that wins in an intelligence battle doesn't reveal its methods. We can't elaborate on the methods we employed to intercept, control, discover and bring down the pilotless plane," he said.

Iranians kept also the Saddams air force that escaped there during the first Gulf war 1991. So it would be highly unlikely that they ever give the drone back or only after they have gathered all the intel it may provide. Quite probably they are going to invite north koreans, russians and chinese to study the drone, anybody who they consider having that kind of info is most damaging to US.

If you think the US secret agencies are going to be forthcoming about what is REALLY going on, you are very naive. Our government rarely, initially, tells us the truth about these things. I won't say we should trust our government all the time, but do "know" that something is amiss. We will find out the truth after we are up to our necks in whatever our government has in mind. The Iranians? Idiot blockhead liars. As a government........that is. Their people are being lied to, as well. Imagine a world without the Iranian and North Korean threat! Pretty scary......but pretty appealing, also.

What I find truely funny is, OHbama asked them to please give it back. LOL.... Uh, yeah, see what had happened was...
Iran playing finders keepers... Now the serious comment. For the past year, they have had several accidents that included death to several top scientist of their nuclear programs and missle defense/offense programs. A couple of assasinations topped off with a few defectors.

Even that option can't overcome Murphy's Law.

Iran is refusing to give it back? This is absolutly shocking. I don't see why the American people should put up with such a directly warlike action as this refusal!

In other news, recalcitrant Pakistani jerks are also refusing to give back the fragments of cruise missiles fired into their villages. Those pieces of depleted uranium in your kindergarten are US property, you thieves!

I thought that myself. It would be funny, if Iran responds by shooting missles at China.

they probably hacked it and flew it over their own border to have an excuse to start picking a fight. would explain the malfunction. all they would really need to do that is figure out the frequency the commands where coming to it on. also these people need to wake up and stop acting so childish all of them do anyone who even considers using nuclear bombs.... they are too naive to realize nuclear bombs just cause more problems. what good is it to defeat your enemies, if your entire planet becomes uninhabitable due to nuclear radiation?

Iran just did the US a big favor: they cured Obama and the military of their smugness about the use of drones.

But I wonder if Obama learned anything from it, because he clearly didn't realize how stooo piddd he looked when he demanded Iran return our toy.

It does beg the question why no self destruct mechanism was installed that could be remotely activated, like when all the Iranian brass gather around for the photo op.

Secondly, perhaps the 'lost' of the drone wasn't such an accident after all. Think of all the 'useful' information they could be downloading as we write: itunes, family photos, YouTube skits and Lucy reruns, not to mention newclear stuff like fission, fusion and super glue.

I think Our gallant Officials should go to Wal-Mart buy their toys: it is make in China, it is safer for kids , it doesn't hurt anybody, it has NOT secret on it, and most and foremost, it is much, much cheaper!...And, BTW, it break by itself!...

Obama 2012

I thought the middle east lobbyists were just a GWB thing but apparently the Clinton's and now Obama are raking in the funds as well. Google has satellites that can take pictures close enough to get facial identifications. So why am I supposed to believe that this made up idea of a spy plane has any more benefit than the google satellites? It doesn't and it's another conspiracy to keep supporting Israel with 3 billion dollars in aid every year. They added a rebuttal of they don;t know how they will respond with America in their air space and it's just another scare tactic to get America to support fascism and international aid. BS< BS< BS. Strange how we claim to be the strogest millitary country and now Iram is being claimed on the same technoligical level as us becuase they got a plane without damage, "took control." How stupid to these government officials think America is to believe all these threats and deception of war that only create more wealth for the polititions? THE PEOPLE WANT THIER EARTH BACK MR. POLITITION!
