Obama '60 Minutes' Interview: GOP Presidential Candidates' Core Philosophy Is The Same (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON — In making the case for his re-election, President Barack Obama is arguing that it doesn't matter who the Republicans nominate to run against him because the core philosophy of the GOP candidates is the same and will stand in sharp relief with his own.

The president laid out an argument for a second term in a wide ranging interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" that aired Sunday, bluntly saying that if voters believe in the Republican agenda of lower taxes, including for the wealthy, and weaker regulations then he will lose.

"I don't think that's where the American people are going to go," he added, "because I don't think the American people believe that based on what they've seen before, that's going to work."

For some time, Democrats and Obama allies have been anticipating that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will ultimately win the Republican nomination. But with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich atop many polls now, Democrats have begun to train their fire on him.

Obama argued that the two Republicans represent the same fundamental set of beliefs.

"The contrast in visions between where I want to take the country and what ... where they say they want to take the country is going to be stark," he said. "And the American people are going to have a good choice and it's going to be a good debate."

He rejected questioner Steve Kroft's suggestion that the public was judging him on his performance as president. "I'm being judged against the ideal," he said. "Joe Biden has a good expression. He says, `Don't judge me against the Almighty, judge me against the alternative.'"

Obama predicted the fight to the Republican nomination won't be resolved quickly. "I think that they will be going at it for a while," he said.

He described both of the top GOP candidates, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, as political fixtures.

Of Gingrich he said: "He's somebody who's been around a long time, and is good on TV, is good in debates."

"But Mitt Romney has shown himself to be somebody who's ... who's good at politics, as well," he said. "He's had a lot of practice at it."

Obama is counting on voters giving him credit for avoiding a second Great Depression, bailing out the auto industry and passing a signature health care law even while acknowledging that the public is hardly satisfied with the direction of the country.

He also listed such achievements as ending the Pentagon's policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" for gay service members and the elimination of Osama bin Laden and other top al Qaida leaders.

"But when it comes to the economy, we've got a lot more work to do," he conceded.

He rejected Republican criticism that his economic policies amount to class warfare, saying he is simply trying to restore an "American deal" that focuses on building a strong middle class.

In a major speech in Osawatomie, Kan., this week, Obama argued that even before the recent recession hit, Americans at the top of the income scale grew wealthier while others struggled and racked up debt. He also has called for spending on jobs initiatives and for an extension of a payroll tax cut that would be paid for by increasing taxes on taxpayers who make $1 million or more.

"There are going to be people who say, `This is the socialist Obama and he's come out of the closet,'" Obama said.

But he added: "The problem is that our politics has gotten to the point, where we can't have an honest conversation about the greatest income inequality since the 1920s. And we can't have an honest conversation about the irresponsibility that resulted in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, without somebody saying that somehow we're being divisive."

With a video emailed and texted to supporters, President Barack Obama announced he would be running for reelection on April 4, 2011.

"We're doing this now because the politics we believe in does not start with expensive TV ads or extravaganzas, but with you -- with people organizing block by block, talking to neighbors, co-workers, and friends. And that kind of campaign takes time to build," the email read.

It is Thursday morning 2:30am an i tuned into Hannity and a woman by the name of Gretchen hamel was talking about how the GOP needs a get tough presential canditate who can make tough decisions on medicare, defense and medical, medicaid. well, lets take her job away from her, freeze her assets if she is rich and give her no finacial way of taking care of herself and throw her under the bus like she wants for so many other fellow americans. She suggests that it is breaking this country. We have set on money we could be using to put america back to work but no the obstructionist rather see President Obama kicked out of office rather than help him. Of course if they could get a tea party person in the white house raping the country of its vast resources and ging it to those cronies on wall street, you know, the job makers. Yeah right! Thieves you mean. But, getting back to Ms. hamel whomever she is lets take everything away from her and see how she feels, afterall her position in the private sector is breaking the country. We are paying her too much. LOL

You may not like Obama, but tell me, what exactly is it that you're excited about with any of the GOP candidates? The US government is the nation's #1 largest employer 2nd to the USPS, which is about to undergo massive cuts and will guarantee double digit unemployment on top of our Congress recently cutting spending and the triggered across the board cuts.
If a business can’t survive or is losing money because of a protective regulation of not pumping chemicals into water sources or our air that is too costly for them, then start a different business. Business is about competitiveness and ingenuity as well as profitability. Those regulations are there to protect us, plants, animals, the earth and our children from these things called chemicals, most of which make us sick, give us birth defects and even lead to premature death, but who cares as long as you’re promised jobs in return, right? Peeling back all of those protective regulations and getting rid of the EPA would lay off tens of thousands of people, further burdening unemployment in this country, while poisoning our people and our country. This is what all of these candidates want. They also want companies and states to do what they want to, but want to tell you who you can or can't marry, what sexual preference you should have, if you should or should not have a baby, and what religion to have to believe. Constitutional? What about liberty?

"doesn't matter who the Republicans nominate to run against him because" they WILL BEAT OBAMA! At the rate Obama, aka Carter 2, is becoming so unpopular even a ham sandwich has a chance of defeating him.

Ok vote republican and watch rich people get richer
02:31 AM on 12/17/2011
The only way you have a valid argument, is if you are for something. Explain why any of these candidates will do better, because pointing out simply that "they will beat Obama" lacks just as much fact as these candidates do. If anything, what you consider Obama's failures should be a warning to you. That no matter who gets voted in, things will go awry and that candidates rarely live up to expectations. You think these people will bring change? That's what most of us thought before Obama. They are all politicians and propaganda is a left and right problem. Choosing to only see one side of that does not make a sound decision or a valid point.

Unemployement up, gas prices up, spending way up, health care bill slammed down our throats, stimulus that did nothing but waste more money, and does the world really look at us different because of this president? You want my vote? You think the big issue is income inequality? Hate the rich that's your answer. How about finding ways to help those less furtunate. No we get punish rich people. I'm far from rich and am sick and tired of this hate the rich crap we get from this president and others. If I was needy the last place I would look for help is the government. Those wing nuts have a pretty bad track record. If your that poor and that needy look to a church or other places that can help. They have a good track record.

Yes he is more liked than Bush

Revenue feeds our military and our government. You can't have "the greatest country on earth" by paying Wal-mart prices. You want little or no taxes and small government? Move to a second or third world country. What about a poor agnostic person? Our constitution gives us the right to freedom of religious persecution (which goes both ways), but if you are not apart of a large organized religion, then what? I love it how you refer to poor people as "needy," implying that their needs are far beyond what is normal. You are obviously only concerned with your own self-being. Of course, helping the poor should be someone else's job, not yours. The real question is, what is with all of this business about hating the poor? You think that if they were able to get higher paying jobs and do better for themselves that they wouldn't? You think they want to be poor? The question for you personally, is who is more worth helping and protecting? The poor or the rich? Because right now there is absolutely nothing hurting the rich no matter how high the tax rate is.
Assistance from our government isn't perfect, but nothing else is either, including free market capitalism. Expecting perfection draws forth failure, just as so the pride predicates the fall.

The only place this know-nothing, big talker, liar is popular is at Huffington posts. The majority knows his objective was to Destroy the United States of America. The worse president in the history of our country has been OBAMA who loves to hear himself TALK! With a staff of hundreds between him and his wife--his teleprompter---and going against our Country where ever he's been is not what we want, need or will re-ELECT! What has he ever done that was not him taking the GLORY for another persons efforts? Obama is a disgrace to this country and must be defeated in 2012 !

Obama didn't end the war in Iraq. The troop withdrawls from Iraq were negociated some years back.

The U.S.–Iraq Status of Forces Agreement (official name: "Agreement Between the United States of America and the Republic of Iraq On the Withdrawal of United States Forces from Iraq and the Organization of Their Activities during Their Temporary Presence in Iraq") is a status of forces agreement (SOFA) between Iraq and the United States. It establishes that U.S. combat forces will withdraw from Iraqi cities by June 30, 2009, and all U.S. forces will be completely out of Iraq by December 31, 2011, subject to possible further negotiations which could delay withdrawal and a referendum scheduled for mid-2009 in Iraq which may require U.S. forces to completely leave by the middle of 2010. ....

... Ratification by Iraqi Parliament

On November 27, 2008, the Iraqi Parliament ratified a Status of Forces Agreement with the United States, establishing that U.S. combat forces will withdraw from Iraqi cities by June 30, 2009, and all U.S. forces will be completely out of Iraq by December 31, 2011,

hahah yeah I think he summed it up pretty much in that interview about being a one termer if he wasn't able to fix the economy in his first term. Kind of blew that out of the water the first two years in office.

See Yah!

We had a surplus under Clinton. Bsuhwas the one who spent until we were broke. 2/3 of the current debt belongs to bush and his tax giveaways to the rich and rebuilding Iraq. By contrast, Obama stopped a second great depression and is rebuilding america.
12:58 PM on 12/14/2011
You don't know what you are talking about!!!! The surplus was borrowed from social security and never paid back. The only debt that matters is the total national debt. You can have a surplus and a debt at the same time, but you can't have a surplus if the amount of debt is going up each year. And the national debt went up every single year under Clinton. Had Clinton really had a surplus the national debt would have gone down. It didn't go down precisely because Clinton had a deficit every single year. The U.S. Treasury's historical record of the national debt verifies this.
A balanced budget or a budget surplus is a great thing, but it's only relevant if the budget surplus turns into a real surplus at the end of the fiscal year. In Clinton's case, it never did. When Clinton left office the national debt was $5.73 trillion. When Bush left, it was $10.7 trillion. That's a difference of $4.97 trillion. Obama's short time of 3 years beats them all 15,061,219,630,916.58 a increase of 4.3 trillion in 3 years on this pace it will be around 21 trillion after his second term.....Do we really want to stay on this road...........

Define socialism. Is the structure of our military socialistic or democratic? Can give specific instances of Obama policies that are socialistic. Was his bailout of wall street with bush socialistic? Was his 17 tax cuts to small businesses socialistic? Was obama's saving the American auto industry from going down the toilet socialistic?
