Occupy Wall Street Ports Blockade: Protesters Eye West Coast Sites

Occupy Wall Street Ports Blockade

First Posted: 12/11/11 10:06 PM ET Updated: 12/11/11 10:15 PM ET

OAKLAND, Calif. (Reuters / December 11) - Anti-Wall Street protesters, hoping to briefly cripple a key supply chain of American commerce and re-energize their movement, plan to attempt to block major West Coast ports Monday.

By marching on U.S. ports from California to Alaska, organizers look to call attention to economic inequalities in the country and a financial system they complain is unfairly tilted toward the wealthy.

The planned action comes after the Occupy Wall Street movement that began in New York in September has seen its tent camps in most big West Coast cities dismantled in police raids, leaving the movement looking for new avenues to voice its discontent.

But a plan to shutter multiple ports simultaneously could prove difficult because some of the facilities are in massive complexes with multiple entrances that would be tough to fully block, even if large numbers of demonstrators turn out.

Activists aligned with the Occupy Wall Street movement did briefly succeed in shuttering Oakland's port, the fifth busiest in the country, for hours on Nov. 2 after police kept their distance.

Oakland, long an Occupy hot spot, may again be center stage Monday in a day of protest seen as a test of the movement's momentum, along with the combined ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Organizers are also targeting Portland, Anchorage, Seattle, Tacoma and Houston.

"The objective of the day is to shut down the port through mass action,'' said Mike King, a graduate student who acts as a media liaison for Occupy Oakland. ``The Occupy movement is attacking the 1 percent at their point of profit.''

Police in several cities were so far not disclosing their plans for handling the protesters or whether they aimed to confront them, risking clashes, or stand back.

FOCUS ON TRUCK DRIVERS

The Port of Oakland has mounted a public relations campaign to dissuade protesters from joining the effort, while two of the largest labor unions involved have split -- with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union opposed to the blockade and Teamsters in favor.

But union workers were largely expected to stay on the job, and were contractually barred from joining such a strike. The protest will focus in part on truck drivers who earn low wages and cannot join unions because they are classified as independent truck drivers, and must provide their own trucks.

"It's a group that encapsulates basically everything that is wrong with society,'' King said.

Among the companies at which protesters directed their ire was SSA Marine, which loads and unloads cargo ships. Organizers said they planned to target its terminal at the combined ports of Los Angeles-Long Beach, which together handle 40 percent of the nation's waterborne imports.

"They are independent contractors,'' SSA Marine spokesman Bob Watters said of the nonunion drivers. Truckers provide their own vehicles and the lease agreements are day by day, he said, allowing them to work for many companies.

Oakland port spokesman Isaac Kos-Read said the issue of independent truckers was being adjudicated in court, and that the port was working with unions and its tenants to improve the environmental impact of trucking.

"The port empathizes with the issues brought up by the Occupy movement,'' he said. "But we have a strategy for inclusive development. Shutting down the port is only going to hurt the people they are trying to help.''

They are making more sense now. Let's stop importing every darn thing and get back to making it ourselves, thus reducing the unemployment rate and helping get our own economy back on track. Now if we can only find a way to block the oversea outsourcing of jobs! Our corporations are ruthless, they destroy jobs and milk the citizens blind at the same time and probably invest the money oversees where it is safer than in our crumbling economy. It's almost treason! What I don't understand about these "corporations" is their stupidity, even a lowly parasite does not kill it's own host.

Not everything that comes through our ports comes from overseas, and a lot of things that come from overseas include things that a great deal of the country cannot get during real winters, such as fresh produce. Oh, it's very easy for you to tell everyone we should grow our own food- year round- even when the ground is frozen and we're under a foot or several of snow instead of buying produce shipped from central or South America.

Pretty impressive actions at the West Coast ports today. If the ports are vulnerable to actions by ordinary citizens how "safe" are they? Closing the ports reminds us of the difference between real product transfers and "virtual" transactions on a computer screen, and raises the issue of trade agreements resulting in trade deficits and jobs shipped overseas.

I hope the current administration keeps supporting this nonsense. The OWS people probably don't realize that 99% of us don't support them... but that 1% sure seems to like them. Good luck with that.

They are called "Owner/Operators" and they have been independent for decades. They choose to be independent. They enjoy being independent. They are by nature, independent. They don't want to be tied to any one company, or to any union. Your representation is bogus.
==============================================================================

JHberger,

You know NOT what you speak. Here is an Open Letter From America's Port Truck Drivers on Occupy the Ports that contradicts your assertions.

http://cleanandsafeports.org/blog/2011/12/12/an-open-letter-from-america%E2%80%99s-port-truck-drivers-on-occupy-the-ports/

Here is additional information how Goldman Sachs exploits Port Truck Drivers
http://www.alternet.org/economy/153393/how_goldman_sachs_and_other_companies_exploit_port_truck_drivers_%E2%80%94_occupy_protesters_plan_to_shut_down_west_coast_ports_in_protest/

The MSM has been very effective in the past, but the populace is slowly waking up to the deceptions. Maybe even you, unless you are part & parcel of those who pedal this nonsense. The latter seems to fit since you repeated "independent" 4 times in your brief response. It does not make it so simply because you keep repeating it. The days of GOPAC and the meme of "Language: A Mechanism of Control" are over.

I have been in the Trucking industry for over 16 years and personally know thousands of Owner/Operators, and most of them woul rather park their trucks than work as an employee of some company or as a pawn of some union. This is not my words but the words of these truck drivers. The "Open Letter" you pointed to is signed by 5 drivers which is hardly a glaring representation of drivers' sentiments as a whole. The other article is mainly an opinion piece, so you have offered no facts to contradict the OP's thoughts or assertions.

Really, your keeping hard working people from going to their jobs. So social dependency by you people is acceptable as an option for no wanting to work, lazy, sloathful people.

Independent truck drivers only take container jobs when times are hard and they need to make a truck payment . It's generally a way to enter the market. when better paying loads become available , they move on . You can always tell when the economy sucks when you see huntin'pantywagons hauling containers .

Quite remarkable all those posting that they are only hurting their own truck drivers and unions- like they really ever cared about unions and truck drivers wages. They denounce posts saying this movement is ineffectual but they take the time to to condem them. If you are talking about them they are winning. Whats most hilarious is the number of right wingers here that are most eager to discredit this group that has "no demands". OWS will set the stage for the coming election and the whiners will be recognised for supporting the Fascist State and criminal corporations.

A way to spread this tactic around the country (blocking the distribution of goods made by corporations who've shipped their jobs to China) would be to occupy the actual distribution system throughout the country. Block rail links (there are only a few lines that can connect west to east) and then occupy freeways (again, only several west to east connections). Why this would work is that Occupiers from across the country, in the heartland, in smaller communities, could participate. Hundreds of interruptions, quickly, anywhere in the country, random and mobile.

But by disrupting shipping, you're hurting American workers, American small businesses, American agriculture... well, everyone except the 1%. Think of how many of those shipments are of necessities like food and medicine.
