Argentina President Cristina Fernandez Sworn In, Again, In Style (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/12/11 08:22 AM ET Updated: 12/12/11 01:26 PM ET

It's easy to write about First Lady Fashion, harder to write about female presidents' fashion -- merely because, unfortunately, there are far fewer to write about.

But we got an opportunity to take in some head of state style as Cristina Fernandez was sworn in as president of Argentina this weekend. And boy, did she look chic.

Fernandez took Argentina's oath of office for the second time, becoming South America's first female political leader to ever be reelected. But this time something was different: she did the honors without her husband, Nestor Kirchner, by her side. Nestor passed away in 2010.

AP noted that Fernandez wore black for the occasion -- a black dress with lace sleeves cinched at the waist with an oversized black belt. The outfit bore its own significance, as Cristina has stuck with an all-black wardrobe since Kirchner's 2010 death.

So while an inauguration is an emotional one for any new president, Fernandez signaled through her chic yet somber outfit that the moment was truly bittersweet.

Take a look below at Argentina's glamorous commander-in-chief and the array of elegant black outfits she has worn in the months since her husband's passing -- the piece de resistance being, of course, her inauguration outfit. Can you imagine a U.S.-elected female president wearing sheer sleeves to her inauguration?

I encourage everyone to see "South of the Border". In one scene, Oliver Stone interviews Cristina Fernandez, and she explains how the IMF had crashed Argentina's economy. Nestor Kirchner also had some good things to say.

Obviously there's nobody else worth it in Argentina to be president, and they got stuck for another 6 years with more of the same, 25% inflation run by an incapacitated government since Kirchner "cosa-nostra-style" took over.

Have you ever been to Argentina? You seem to comment based only on news articles. First of all, Argentina's presidential term is 4 years, not 6. Then, you speak about an incapacitated government. Just an example (and there are many) did you know that when Néstor Kirchner took office poverty reached over 50% of the population and the unemployment rate was at about 20%. Please read a little more before making such rash comments.

I wish her the very best of luck in a land littered with corruption at every turn. And being the "style" section, good luck to her clothes, as well.

How come Argentina and Brazil get classy leaders and have good economies and we get the pick of what we have available to us and crap economies to add insult to injury?

Tis the truth and painfully true. We need a woman running. I'm not counting MB as a woman worthy of running.

Brazil has horrendous pockets of poverty and crime.

The country couldn't be any more a-backward, so a dolly chick as Pres. can't hurt.

I believe this "dolly chick" as you so quaintly put it, has done a great job. Quite unlike the American - so called - leaders.
10:35 AM on 12/12/2011
Check your facts, Donns:
"Increasingly alarmed by constant reports of kidnappings and murders, wealthy families are bullet-proofing their windows and cars, placing armed guards outside their homes and having microchips fitted in their clothes and cars so they can be tracked by satellite if kidnapped."

... if she's not culpable in this, DON'T blame American leaders, either, Donns.

One to grow on, donns. Merry Christmas.

stylish, yes - but I'll take Brazil's Vilma Rouseff over Cristina anytime.
10:34 AM on 12/12/2011
sorry, that's Dilma Rouseff.

So glad to see female Presidents. How progressive other nations are versus the US on this front? I think her clothes are ok, all black but agree the article should be on her intelligence, not clothing.
10:13 AM on 12/12/2011
Well yeah, except that this particular article is about her clothing. Wouldn't make a lot of sense to not mention it, would it.

There is plenty of material available about her intellect and effectiveness. I suggest you leave the style section if that is what you're looking for.

Her clothes are black because she lost her husband.

Why is it when a man is sworn in, barely a mention of his "fashion" but when a women is sworn in it's the first thing to be mentioned. I thought that we had gotten past this kind of crap years ago.

This may be "the first thing" you read about President Fernandez, but it most certainly is NOT the first thing mentioned about her reelection.

It was big news everywhere. Guess you were in the style section at the time.
