Backlash Hits Lowe's After Company Pulls Ads From TLC's 'All-American Muslim' Reality Show

Companies Ads All American Muslim

By CHRISTOPHER WEBER   12/12/11 10:26 AM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES -- Lowe's Home Improvement has found itself facing a backlash after the retail giant pulled ads from a reality show about American Muslims.

The retail giant stopped advertising on TLC's "All-American Muslim" after a conservative group known as the Florida Family Association complained, saying the program was "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

The show premiered last month and chronicles the lives of five families from Dearborn, Mich., a Detroit suburb with a large Muslim and Arab-American population.

A state senator from Southern California said Sunday he was considering calling for a boycott.

Calling the Lowe's decision "un-American" and "naked religious bigotry," Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, told The Associated Press he would also consider legislative action if Lowe's doesn't apologize to Muslims and reinstate its ads. The senator sent a letter outlining his complaints to Lowe's Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Niblock.

"The show is about what it's like to be a Muslim in America, and it touches on the discrimination they sometimes face. And that kind of discrimination is exactly what's happening here with Lowe's," Lieu said.

The Florida group sent three emails to its members, asking them to petition Lowe's to pull its advertising. Its website was updated to say that "supporters' emails to advertisers make a difference."

The North Carolina-based Lowe's issued a statement apologizing for having "managed to make some people very unhappy."

"Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lightning rod for many of those views," the statement said. "As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance."

The apology doesn't go far enough, Lieu said. The senator vowed to look into whether Lowe's violated any California laws and said he would also consider drafting a senate resolution condemning the company's actions.

"We want to raise awareness so that consumers will know during this holiday shopping season that Lowe's is engaging in religious discrimination," Lieu said.

Besides an apology and reinstatement of the ads, Lieu said he hoped Lowe's would make an outreach to the community about bias and bigotry.

Lieu's office said a decision was expected Wednesday or Thursday on whether to proceed with the boycott.

Lowe's said company officials are trying to make arrangements to talk directly to Lieu about his concerns and clarify the company's position.

Suehaila Amen, whose family is featured on "All-American Muslim," said she was disappointed by the Lowe's decision.

"I'm saddened that any place of business would succumb to bigots and people trying to perpetuate their negative views on an entire community," Amen, 32, told The Detroit News on Sunday.

Dawud Walid, Michigan director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said his group felt "extreme disappointment" at Lowe's "capitulation to bigotry."

Walid said he has heard expressions of anger and calls for a boycott by Muslims but said a key to resolving the Lowe's advertising controversy will be how non-Muslim religious leaders and others react to Lowe's decision.

"I will be picking up the phone tomorrow to some of our friends and allies to explain the situation to them," Walid said Sunday.

Lowes executives should agree to have an off-site meeting in Dearborn, MI. They will then understand. This city has a very large Muslim population; and the best Arab eateries. Most importantly, this city is one if the least unbiased cities in Michigan. A goal that Lowes should strive to obtain when doing busines. Although I am not a Muslim (and don't agree with their religion), I chose to stay in Dearborn, MI on business trips. My reason, minorities business associates attending conventions in other cities around Detroit are harassed unmercifully by police in these cities. But not in Dearborn; where they are treated fairly. Bottom line, Lowes should understand the old proverb regarding Polish jokes: If you tell a derogotory Polish joke, I expect that you will also tell a Jew, Black, Latino derogatory joke. Their withdraw from sponcering this reality show is like telling a derogotory joke against Muslims.

As soon as I heard of the boycott I stopped all construction purchases at other stores and directed them to Lowes. Lets all show our support of the boycott and buy all the products offered in their stores till the shelves are bare and the workers exhausted as a way to show how we feel.

THANK YOU!

I totally agree with Lieu. These are immigrants trying to fit in just like any other ethnic group and for them to be singled out, ostracized and demonized is patently unfair and usually indicates a political or economic agenda at play.

Sorry I thought we lived in a free country, Lowe's can spend their money anyway they want as far as I'm concerned. They have nothing to apologize for. Its certainly not the first time a company pulled their ad dollars from some stupid TV show.
07:13 PM on 12/29/2011
Evidently it is not a free country. Lowes purchased the ad time and then was PRESSURED by self appointed zealots to remove the ads. Why did the FFA have this influence? Because Muslims are one of the few minority groups in this country it is okay to hate.

Love the fact that the show is set in Dearborn, Michigan. Big shout out to "La Pita" Middle Eastern Restaurant! One of my all time faves, if you are ever in Dearborn order the Mediterranean Salmon or the Felaffel.

I didn't hear Lieu complain when advertisers pulled out of the Glen Beck show because of his right wing views? Or when congressmen wiener attacked one of his few remaining advertisers Goldline as being corrupt? Yeah double standard here again being perpetrated by the left wing media!!!

That was clearly not a case of an entire group of people being demonized. Muslims have as much right to unbiased representation as any other group.

The middle is a really sane place to be in!

You're about half right. Although Glen Beck does not really represent a class of people, known fact that conservatives do suffer back lash in certain industries (specifically the entertainment and academia) if their political beliefs are found. It really goes both ways. Although I can understand the concern over Islamic extremists, the show does show that there is another side to the Muslim religion which is absolutely opposite of what the extremists represent.

Lowe's "shudda knowed bettah" and never gotten into that reality show to begin with. Although the families on the show are good Americans, the whole scene is so full of charged up people on both sides that now, the home improvement chain is going to be damned and boycotted whatever it chooses to do. Muslims are so touchy that you can't even write something nice about them without some extremist objecting and getting your comment canned. This provokes a similar reaction in conservative Americans, who understandably fear Islamic fanaticism, ever since the 911 attacks. Trying to build a Mosque and Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center site surely didn't help matters. Neither does the news about the bombings and sectarian violence resurging in Iraq the moment the Americans left.
08:15 PM on 01/07/2012
If you want to take a look at fanaticism, the Christian Crusades are a fine example!
08:39 PM on 01/07/2012
The Christian Crusades were a reaction to the Islamic conquest of the Middle East, North Africa and Southern Europe. Fanatics beget fanatics, as oppression incites revolution and conquest is the parent of revolt. That's the way times were back then, and if things are better now, it has taken over 1200 years to see some improvement.

I will buy more at Lowes now instead of buying in Lowes and home Depot

So some muslim people want to FORCE Lowe's to spend their advertising dollars... Yeah, this is sure to gain sympathy and support for their cause.
07:45 PM on 12/23/2011
You are seriously misdirecting your anger here. The Senator wanting to force Lowe's to reinstate their advertising is an Asian, non-Muslim American.

It may be hard to believe but non-Muslims have also been outraged by the obvious religious discrimination by Lowe's in this situation. Senator Lieu won't be able to force them to reinstate their ads but he has a point that this country was not based on religious discrimination and it should continue to be a country based on tolerance and acceptance.

You presume I am angry. I think this whole issue is just ridiculous.

I was referring to CAIR. But I take issue with a Senator, ANY Senator, telling anyone how they should spend their own money.

I never realized that tolerance and acceptance had a price tag.
06:14 PM on 12/29/2011
Well i can tell the right are not outraged...matter a fact they don't care.

Lowe's is twice as far from me as Home Depot. But the store is cleaner, the products fairly priced, and I support their right to sponsor or not as they see fit. People want to boycott? I'll go the opposite way. Now I don't shop at Home Deport. I shop at Lowe's.
12:47 PM on 12/23/2011
Lowe's was not doing very good in the first place. Lowe's Cos. will close 20 stores in 15 states and cut 1,950 jobs. They are scheduled to open 25 other stores. Good luck. I have a Home Depot and a Menard's in my town so the closing of the lowes a town over has no effect on my family.
