Hello Kitty Elle

Sanrio's head honcho is cute-ifying some fashion mag covers this month.

A life-size Hello Kitty (with feet and everything!) graces the cover of Elle Taiwan this month, posing in fancy couture for two different covers in honor of the publication's 20th anniversary.

To us, these jumbo kitties seem a little ... creepy? We asked one of our fashion friends who lives in Taiwan to weigh in:

Well, it's not that weird for us, because we already have like, a Hello Kitty hospital, Hello Kitty airplanes, Hello Kitty TVs and toasters and we have Hello Kitty hotels and hotels with Hello Kitty suite. The only thing about it that strikes me as weird is that Elle is more...highbrow, whereas the Hello Kitty hotels, etc., in Taiwan are seen as gimmicky. So I'm not sure how that will go over.

How many birds did Kitty have to kill to make the feather dress?

I am a big fan of Hello Kitty. I love her!! Leave her alone! She's the only precious thing left in this world. That and cute baby animals...and my kitties...and doggies too!

I don't understand the popularity of the Hello Kitty line. They are ugly to me. Very expensive line, I believe.

The covers are cute, but I would not have paid attention to what magazine it was. I would have seen the Kitty and automatically assumed the mag was a children's magazine and passed right over it.

Look if it was cool enough for Fender guitars to make a pink Hello Kitty guitar. It's cool to put Hello Kitty on anything.

=^_^= I see nothing wrong or creepy about this. If it was Mickey/Minnie Mouse, would this even be a discussion. Empires are built on characters and those that love them.

I think it's super cute and a smart move. Hello Kitty is a huge part of many markets and making her a fashion cover girl helps promote her image, just as an aveage cover would advertise a star and designer (Eg:such as Britney Spears in a D&G dress.) It's better than Miss Piggy and her negative attitude gracing covers and bill boards. Hello Kitty is a wonderful character loved by people of all ages from all demographics. P.S the black dot dress cover is amazing.

I vote cute :)...most little girls went through a Hello Kitty phase and will love this!!!! Good marketing! to get new buyers for the magazine and nostalgia for others. Why does HP take non-controversial things and try to make a big deal out of it? I don't think anyone can find anything creepy about it. HP is once again reaching to make big deal out of nothing.

From the time my 34yr old daughter was alittle girl to present day with grandaughters, ages 2 and 8-Hello Kitty has been a coveted posession for sure. From stationary items, hair accessaries to clothing. Umbrellas to toothbrushes, she has been part of our girls' lives. Hello Kitty rocks!!!
