Mitt Romney Dismisses $10,000 Bet With Rick Perry, Criticizes Obama

Mitt Romney 10000 Bet Rick Perry Obama

KASIE HUNT   12/12/11 04:16 PM ET   AP

MANCHESTER, N.H. — When Mitt Romney sat down next to a patron wearing a Vietnam veteran's cap, Romney wanted to ask him about his military service.

But 63-year-old Bob Garon wanted to talk about gays in the military – because he is a gay veteran.

Garon was sitting in a booth across from his husband, Bob Lemire, at Chez Vachon, a must-stop diner for politicians looking for votes in the New Hampshire primary.

Garon and Lemire eat there nearly every morning. The owners call them "The Bobs."

Surrounded by a crush of TV cameras, Romney asked Garon about his tour in Vietnam. But Garon asked if Romney would support efforts to repeal the New Hampshire law that legalized gay marriage in the state and allowed him and Lemire to marry.

Romney said he supported the repeal because marriage is between a man and a woman.

"OK, that means if you were in the White House, you would not support any form of legislation that would change that so a serviceman would be entitled to any benefits like a man and a woman?" Garon asked. "A veteran and a spouse would not be entitled to any burial benefits, or medical benefits, or anything that the serviceman has devoted his time and effort to his country, and you just don't support equality in terms of same-sex marriage?"

When a veteran dies, his or her spouse is often entitled to certain benefits, including possibly being interred next to their spouse in a military cemetery.

"I believe that marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman," Romney responded. "The Defense of Marriage Act that exists in Washington today defines benefits, whether for veterans or non-veterans as between married spouses and for me that's a man and a woman. We apparently disagree on that."

An aide tried to remove Romney from the situation, claiming the candidate had another interview with Fox News Channel.

It was the kind of unscripted encounter Romney has tried to avoid on the campaign trail, preferring instead to be surrounded by supporters or to make campaign stops without the media trailing him. He stopped at two New Hampshire establishments on Sunday to meet voters, but didn't tell reporters he was going.

Romney says he'll do more unscripted events in the next few weeks. Like them or not, he'll have to: the Iowa caucuses are about three weeks away, on Jan. 3, and the New Hampshire primary follows a week later on Jan. 10.

After Romney's aide tried to get him out of what turned into awkward diner conversation, Garon said: "Oh, I guess the question was too hot."

"No, I gave you the answer," Romney responded, saying Garon had asked for a yes-or-no answer.

Garon wished him good luck and Romney moved on.

Reporters asked Garon to explain why he had questioned Romney so intently.

"Because I'm gay, all right?" Garon said. "And I happen to love a man just like you probably love your wife. Alright? And I think that he or she or whatever are entitled to the same rights that I have. I fought for my country, I did my thing, and I think that my spouse should be entitled to the same entitlements as if I was married to a woman. What the hell is the difference?"

Likely that he won't be nominated anyway, but good for Romney for sticking to his convictions! I am sure that this veteran is a fine American, and also quite courageous for asking the blunt question. But just the fact that he is a veteran does not necessarily improve the argument for gay marriage.

Did you see the video. Mittens tried to tell him that marriage is defined in the Constitution in which it is not even mentioned. Never.

How petty and childish of people to make an issue of Romney's statement. At one time or another all of us have done the same thing.Even though we didn't mean it.This is just another attempt by the leftist news media and the democrats to make the republicans look bad. This is not nearly as stuoid as Obama's claim that america is made up of 57 states, yet the media makes no mention of it or the dumb things Biden comes up with every time he opens his mouth. How about some comments on Solyndra, Fast and Furious, The 1.2 billion dollars Obama's friend Corzine can't account for?Ask Obama why he is stalling until after the elections to announce his decision on the oil pipeline. The media is using this as a diversion from the REAL issues.Get a life, democrats.

Neither the media nor Democrats, nor anyone else needs to try to make Republicans look bad or "stupid," they do that themselves. Be it their callous disregard for the desire of all Americans for equal rights and equality or for the remains of patriotic U.S. service members who died defending our country that they toss into landfills, Republicans have proven themselves over and over again to be the lowest of the low and unfit to inhabit our land any longer.

Us Democrats will get a life when you Republicans get a brain and actually avail yourselves of facts instead of talking points. Republicans don't need the Dems to make them look bad. They've been looking bad since the Reagan Admin. It is wrong of the Republicans hold the payroll tax vote hostage unless Obama signs on to the pipeline. The pipeline will make a few rich people richer, but will help trash the environment. Yes, Fast and Furious was a mistake, but it started under GWB. Solyndra was a mistake, but we weren't lied to about it. Sometimes new technologies fail. Until the Democrats lie this country into a useless and needless war based on Republican lies and greed, kill almost 4500 of our precious soldiers, kill 1/2 million Iraqi civilians, displace app. 4 million refugees, destroy the country's infrastructure, strengthen Iran's influence in the region, ruin our moral reputation in the world, provide the main catalyst for terrorist recruitment, and cost over $1 trillion ($2 trillion with associated medical costs), I remain a Democrat.

Bmumfie, I find it interesting that you, like Obama point your finger at everyone else for your failures.for your info., every democrat sgreed with Bush on the Iraq issue, based on info from the CIA and other intelligence groups.Even liberal Tom Brokaw admitted he saw hundreds of huge sand covered domes in the desert and that it was possible they housed WMD.Speaking of Iran,Obama just gave them a real nice Christmas present, an american DRONE.He could of had it destroyed, but decided to ask Iran to return it instead.Yeah, right.Someday they may be used to kill many more people than were killed in Iraq, if so, would you be so quick to critisize Obama?I doubt it.Obama has no morals and he is good at bowing to our enemies.I would rather hang than to call myself a democrat .Shame on all of you.

Oh, Good for Bob! Nail the mealy-mouth turkey right down! Equal rights are only for those that the all-powerful GOP SAYS are equal. Everybody else can just get to the back of the bus.

Hey, Mitt! An "outrageous" number is a million dollars. That indicates an off-the-cuff, spur of the moment comeback that no one would take seriously. Likewise, one dollar or even $10 would be construed as non-serious. But when you throw out a number like $10,000, that's very telling of your casualness with that amount of money. It means nothing to YOU, but it means a lot to most average Americans.

I'm glad that veteran called Romney out. It galls me that so many people can look straight into someone's eyes and basically say "I don't think you should be happy, because your idea of happiness does not agree with my idea. And if you insist on being happy, then I think the government should punish you for it." Seriously - this guy (and so many others) risked his life for our country's ideals, but because he didn't choose the type of mate Romney, Santorum, and the rest think he should have, then he basically gets screwed. So ridiculous!

Huffpost had a story earlier this week that had Santorum holding forth on how hetero sex was soooo much better than gay sex. I kid you not. The man is a total fool.

Have you noticed that Romney seems to not be able to turn at the waist or head. If he wants to look at someone or something to his right or left, he turns his shoulders and torso - just like a robot! Ironically, very stiff for a flip flopper extraordinaire.

Mitt 'Do You Want To Bet 10,000' Romney is a joke. I thank Rick Perry for forcing him to show his true color. Romney doesn't have a clue that most Americans do not even have $10,000 in their bank accounts. He is out of touch.

Romney has no core values. How can he bet $10K live on TV when some families are struggling to make that money. He is out of touch and clueless. He is toast and done. Go Newt 2012 and get shellacked by BO.
