Most Dangerous Cities In America: Flint, Michigan Tops CQ Press List

First Posted: 12/12/11 03:52 PM ET   Updated: 12/12/11 03:52 PM ET

Of all the places in America with 75,000 people or more, the most dangerous one is Flint, Michigan, according to the latest analysis from CQ Press.

The rankings are based on 2010 data from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report. CQ Press used data on the violent crimes of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault as well as the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson. The organization also ranked the safest places to live based on those same statistics.

In October, Forbes magazine looked at violent crime stats to determine its list of the most dangerous cities. Business Insider conducted a similar analysis in September.

Last year CNN Money ranked Fishers number eight on its top 100 places to live in America. CNN Money noted the city's low unemployment rate of just above 6 percent and cheap housing stock as reasons to make the move to Fishers. As CQ Press found, it also has a very low violent crime rate with no murders and just four aggravated assaults reported in 2010.

the most dangerous cities, brought to you by the pub party!

I find it very hard to believe that New Orleans didn't make that list. We supposedly have the highest murder rate for our size. We also have the most corrupt police force you could imagine. Last weekend we had 10 people killed in shootings and one was a toddler. This is the third toddler that has been shot by stray bullets in the last 4 months. During Halloween 14 people were shot on Bourbon street when gunfire erupted between two guys that "bumped into" each other. They even have cops on each corner down Bourbon. My friend got shot this summer during a car jacking in one of the supposedly safest neighborhoods in New Orleans.

Those other cities must be pretty bad.

Although I haven't performed an independent analysis of my own [which would be the only way I would believe any such results] it is quite clear to me, from the stories I read via the "net" that a good many people that live in any part of the good "O" US of A are less than tranquil these days but are rather more disruptive in their and other lives.

Come on, guys. If you're going to do a list, you have to lower the population to 50,000 people. You're leaving out half the cities in the Mid-Atlantic that didn't annex in over 100 years - Harrisburg, Trenton, Atlantic City, Wilmington DE, Lancaster, Chester, Reading, PA. Almost all these cities are right around 70-80k. Big enough to have to drive 40 blocks before getting out of a bad neighborhood.

FBI Crime stats is broken down by size on Wikipedia for you already.

Again, this list is useless as there are even 2 sizeable, 300 year old cities within a half an hour of Camden whose violent crime rates are higher than Detroit's, but, people wouldn't know, because you guys just copy off of Forbes for ratings. Do a real list next year, guys. Don't leave out half of the ORIGINAL US cities in the Mid-Atlantic due to annexation issues. They're bad, and they need to be recognized so that these cities have pressure to straighten up.

Why? Michigan is wonderful. Detroit isn't Michigan, it's a small percentage. Everyone has left Detroit for a reason, but if you don't visit other places you're definitely missing out, the problem is for some reason people don't care to talk about the cool places in MI they just want to talk about Detroit. Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, the entire Upper Peninsula, Mackinaw, Oakland County Michigan is one of the richest counties in the country.

Why waste money on police...

America can police its self!

Just like any deregulated system does... and look how wonderful our society becomes.

Wall Street and the banking industry, anyone?

Agreed. You can recover from a beating and losing what's in your wallet, but Washington and NY white collar thieves take your whole future!

That is interesting. My aunt lives in a nice area in Flint and someone knocked on her door and then shot her through it. Luckily she survived, and the man was found (she didn't know him, it was just a random act of violence). So no, I would say people living in Saginaw, Flint, and Detroit, MI have a little more violence to deal with then "just getting beaten and losing what's in a wallet." The next time I read a story about a 9 month old getting shot to death in Detroit (which just happened this week), I'll remind myself those people aren't the ones who have it rough.

As long as we pay women to breed more fatherless children, crime will always be high.

Seriously? So, it's totally the woman's fault? How about we 'fix' all men who walk away from their offspring?

have to agree with that.
10:19 AM on 12/16/2011
Well the women choose to lay down w/these individuals and they choose to have their child. That's the choice they make fully knowing the sperm donor is going to walk away.

So yes, I do blame the woman 100%. Lay down w/fleas and you will get bitten.
01:45 PM on 12/15/2011
Well said, walkerny. Only women can get pregnant, not men. The lazy men would have nothing to walk away from if the woman hadn't said yes in the first place.
