208 New Species Discovered In Threatened Region Of Southeast Asia

12/12/11 02:56 PM ET   AP

HANOI, Vietnam — A psychedelic gecko and a monkey with an "Elvis" hairdo are among 208 new species described last year by scientists in the Mekong River region of Southeast Asia, a conservation group announced Monday.

The animals were discovered in a biodiverse region that is threatened by habitat loss, deforestation, climate change and overdevelopment, the WWF said in a report.

The newly described species include a "psychedelic gecko" in southern Vietnam and a nose-less monkey in a remote province of Myanmar that looks like it wears a pompadour.

"While this species, sporting an Elvis-like hairstyle, is new to science, the local people of Myanmar know it well," the Switzerland-based group said in its report.

The region is home to some of the world's most endangered species, including tigers, Asian elephants, Mekong dolphins and Mekong giant catfish, the group said.

"This is a region of extraordinary richness in terms of biodiversity but also one that is extremely fragile," said Sarah Bladen, communications director for WWF Greater Mekong. "It's losing biodiversity at a tragic rate."

The Mekong flows through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

In October, WWF announced Vietnam has lost its last Javan rhinoceros, making the 40 to 60 Javan rhinos living in Indonesia the last remaining members of their species.

Well then lets save them before they are gone. Breed them in captivity if they have to.

Half of these species are now extinct because of a Twitter rumor they make good aphrodesiacs to make more Asians but they have to be mixed with polar bear teeth and panda nipples.

Did any of these new species evolve from something. It is about time we stop looking for new species until we can actually find something that has evolved from something else.

Almost every life form on this planet has evolved from a previous species.

this isn't a new species! this is a mutation from the results of "agent orange" from the Vietnam War 40+ years ago.

The monkey with the Elvis hairdo has an actual monkey pokemon based on him that also sports the Elvis. Ok,I guess Nintendo has some more ideas for their pokemon franchise now.

My curiosity is killing me.

Let's say you were reading an article about puppies and kitties and how they had a joyous time frolicking in the grass...

Could you spew a little vitriol at the republicans about that?

Don't let the hyper-religious folk find out about the self-cloning lizard. It'll just prove God doesn't have a problem with gays or cloning.

Is it possible that these "new species" in Southeast Asia are actually mutations of wildlife species, caused by the use of so many chemicals in the area during the long years of Vietnam wars?

I wonder which animal, insect, reptile, fowl, fish or plant going extinct will be the tipping of the diversity scale that places the recovery of spaceship earth beyond the grasp of human ability. If, as many would have us believe, there is no God, therefore, no devine intervention (ipso-facto Terra finis) could it be next century --- next year --- the day after today?

Considering 90% of all species that ever existed on earth are extinct, most of which humans have nothing to do with, we can't really do much in the grand scheme of things After all if Anubis' orbit is just right we're all gone. And who's fault is that? No ones.

I love the childrens book illustration of the monkey with "Elvis" hair. The one that doesn't even represent that claim. I bet it also has a bunch of Cadillacs too.
