Child homelessness has climbed 33 percent in the U.S. in the past three years, a figure that totals 1.6 million children.

The National Center on Family Homelessness released on Tuesday a state-by-state report card on child homelessness.

Man-made disasters and economic struggles play a part in some states' rankings. Only eight states showed a decrease in child homelessness since the 2006 report was released.

Find out which 10 states have the highest number of homeless children and what statistics play a part in their ranking.

No medical care, what state in the US are the children living in? It is my understanding all states provide free medical care to the children of indigent parents. Where I live there is a strong medical base for all children whose parent(s) may qualify as indigent. In the US I often wonder how the rich sleep knowing there is a hungry or homeless child who could use their help. I do not have much and yet I donate regularly to organizations for children.

why is California with 10 to 20 times the homeless of any other state ranked #5?
01:57 AM on 12/18/2011
Maybe it refers to homelessness rate. CA is the most populous state - which means. largest number of mostly everything. It is also the only none "red state'' in the list and may have more resources and programs to get homeless families off the streets.

Agreed ! Really sad that in a country as "wealthy" as the USA is, we have kids and adults who are homeless and without basic healthcare ! We as Americans should be ashamed of ourselves when we have the world's most millionaires and billionaires !

millionaires and billionaires are way too busy creating jobs.
