Chick-Fil-A 'Ching' 'Chong' Receipts Land Fast Food Company In Hot Water

Posted: 12/13/2011 3:14 pm

Chick-fil-a is in the hot seat again -- this time for the treatment of two Asian customers in Southern California.

Last week, Angry Asian Man reported on a resident adviser from UC Irvine who sent around this photo to a few of his friends:

Apparently, he had taken two of his students to a local Chick-fil-A and received receipts labeled with the names "Ching" and "Chong" -- despite the fact that they had never been asked their names. Kelvin Lee, another UC Irvine student, ended up blogging about the incident on Tumblr. He quotes his RA friend:

I went to talk to the manager, and I told him that this cannot happen ever again. I chose to be calm about it, but I was ready to go off. I made it known that it wasn't okay, and that I didn't appreciate it whatsoever. I think I indirectly fired Lia...

"Lia," the Chick-fil-A cashier who entered the offending names, was indeed dismissed. The chain restaurant provided an official statement on the matter to Grub Street LA:

Please understand and accept our confirmation that the inappropriate, and unthinking behavior of a young team member at one of our restaurants does not support any claim or even suggestion of racism at our restaurant. The individual clearly violated our operating standards; the matter was addressed and discussed immediately with the guests on the spot; and a confirmation was provided that the employee was immediately dismissed for the individual behavior.

Our Chick-fil-A restaurant Operators and their employees try very hard every day to actually go the extra mile in serving ALL of our customers with honor, dignity and respect. The circumstances here are a simply case of immaturity, failed judgment, and human error... it has nothing to do with the service and operational standards of our Chick-fil-A restaurants which are consistently rated at the highest level of service in the foodservice industry.

A day later, Lee took to his blog again, this time in reaction to the inflammatory comments from his original post. In an entry tagged, "tired of the hate," he defended both the franchise and the manager who had hired Lia:

I realize Chik-Fil-A hasn't exactly had the best track record when it comes to issues of social justice, but I don't think the horrible mistake on the part of one individual is reason enough to launch a witch hunt. There's no way the person who hired this woman would have been able to know she'd do something so stupid.

Chick-fil-A is no stranger to controversy. When a Hollywood branch opened in September of this year, they were greeted by protesters who were angry about the chain's support of anti-gay groups like Focus on the Family and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, according to Hollywood Patch. The faith-based corporation, which is known for closing restaurants on Sundays and starting each workday with a prayer, has been accused of homphobia because of their ties to anti-gay marriage groups.

Why doesn't the chain just use numbers like Taco Bell? Totally unnecessary controversy.

The receipt photos have me puzzled about another possible discrimination issue. After serving Chong, why did the clerk serve another thirty people before she waited on Ching?

Another day, another misleading Huffington Post headline.

Kudos to Chic-Fil-A for responding in an appropriate manner.

says the person who is NOT a "Native American Indian", therefore an inbred (and dimwitted) immigrant himself, whose ancestors likely massacred the Indians and stole their land much like Hitler and the Nazis slaughtered the Jews. Or perhaps he's just a 2nd or 3rd generation immigrant born on US soil, so now he's insulting his grandfolks for their choice to bring his dimwitted existence to America. LOL

OMG!!! Someone called a chinese person CHONG behind their back on a sales reciept! Let's find out who she is and drag her family into the spotlight and interogate them!!!

C'mon I think this story is overkill. How old was she- 17? We all did stupid idiotic stuff at 17. Definitely not worthy of national news or even regional news.

Misleading headline. It should read "...Lands Emplyee In Hot Water."
"Are you racist and/or ignorant?" isn't an interview question.
As someone who has had their fair share of being mistreated at restaurants, I just simply tell many people the stories and avoid those restaurants. In this case I just think people have it out for Chick-Fil-A so the story was blown up a little bit more. If nothing was done I could see a reason for the article but they handled it correctly so what's the big deal. Oh, I am asian and I would've had reacted in the same way.
01:31 PM on 12/14/2011
Dumb mistake, she was fired. Move on nothing to see.

If you don't like the restaurant's stance on other social issues make that the basis of your story not some random event that occurred outside the realm of the company's control. They can support anything they want even if you don't like it.

true that is dont eat there any more!

Apologists say:
"Get over it."
"What's the problem."
"It's blown out of proportion."
"Minorities do the same thing."

Folks who are racist are like the wealthy elite who angrily stamp and shout and rail against the poor who are on welfare, and then these same elite turn around and collect corporate welfare to the tune of 100s of billions.

Believers in racial superiority feel uncomfortable when their beliefs are confronted and denounced in public. They don't like that. They like the traditional way of practicing racism without any questions, calmly and civilly. Fortunately that tradition is now ending.

NextStopWonder made an excellent point and the comment was removed. WHY?
10:46 AM on 12/14/2011
If you went to a fast-food restaurant in China with your friend and they wrote "Joe" and "Jane" on your receipts, would you become offended and make a scene by getting the worker fired? People make these things out to be a much bigger deal than they really are. It's gotten to the point where I get feelings of guilt and anxiety when I refer to people from Mexico as being "Mexican."
12:02 PM on 12/14/2011
That's the legacy of America's racism. China does not have an equivalent history.
08:45 AM on 12/19/2011
You might want to review Chinese history, or the present rather. Have you ever heard of the weigers in Lanzhou?

According to this "Top News Story" account, this was an isolated incident by an employee who was immediately fired. As the complainant is quoted, "I realize Chik-Fil-A hasn't exactly had the best track record when it comes to issues of social justice, but I don't think the horrible mistake on the part of one individual is reason enough to launch a witch hunt. There's no way the person who hired this woman would have been able to know she'd do something so stupid." So, why isn't HP running stories of real importance, such as the new Playboy cover featuring Lindsay Lohan?
