Christopher Nolan: 'The Dark Knight Rises' & Batman's Age

Posted: 12/14/11 03:02 PM ET

Christopher Nolan has been planning this all along.

While the director's 2008 film "The Dark Knight" was heralded as a masterpiece by comic book lovers and general cinema lovers alike, it was just the first part of his plan. He reveals in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times that the ending of "The Dark Knight" set up the eight year gap in the storyline between that film and the new "Dark Knight Rises."

"It will make a lot more sense to people when they see the film. But it's not a great mystery -- it's the jumping-off point for the film -- but it's hard for me to articulate it," Nolan said. "I think the mood at the beginning of the film will make a lot of sense. If I had to express it thematically, I think what we're saying is that for Batman and Commissioner Gordon, there's a big sacrifice, a big compromise, at the end of the 'The Dark Knight' and for that to mean something, that sacrifice has to work and Gotham has to get better in a sense. They have to achieve something for the ending of that film -- and the feeling at the end of that film -- to have validity. Their sacrifice has to have meaning and it takes time to establish that and to show that, and that's the primary reason we did that."

That achievement is saving Gotham from The Joker and Harvey Dent; the sacrifice is taking much of the blame for what happened, mostly banishing Batman from the spotlight. This reflects the storyline of the Frank Miller-written "The Dark Knight Returns," the special comic arc that featured Batman returning after a long absence from the public eye.

The film also will take elements from Bane's origin story; the monstrous escaped criminal breaks a weakened Batman's back in an early-90s arc, which is alluded to in the new poster for the film, which carries the subtitle, "The Legend Ends."

They're going to have to stop releasing trailers and storylines because by the time the movie hits theaters everybody on the planet is going to know what the movie is all about, where's the fun in that. Speilberg did a great job with hiding all things related to his movie Super 8 and it worked. Just sayin.

Bane is supposed to be a super roided-up freak I hope there is some serious CGI going on in these fight scenes.

Since Nolan is helming the DC films at least he should consider "ideally" casting Gina Carano as Diana/Wonder Woman.

Compared to Dark Knight, this Batman is having many more spoilers, pictures behind the scenes. It kind of puts a damper on it. At least for me. Sure I dont have to look at them but they are out there, everywhere.

Why is Batman so important. Don't get me wrong, Batman Begins was amazing, and Christian Bale is a great actor, but it's the same thing over now. I didn't like the Dark Knight. So please tell me why this movie is so important?

Theres a lot of Nolan fanboyz out there who worship everything he does so they want it to be important.
I haven't thought any of his batman films are extraordinary and Bale with his stupid voice doesn't cut it as Batman.

You aren't very bright. What type of voice would you use to ensure your anonymity? Your own voice? A high, shrill voice?

It's mind-boggling to me that the voice gets criticized.

Batman is the only major superhero that anyone could actually be. Yes you'd need the money and a couple decades of training but in the end he is a normal human being going up against villains of every type and, overall, fighting to insure that no innocent ever suffers.

Is the plot of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ based on Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns (minus the part about Superman)?

But, did Batman Returns redeem Batman, forever?

Hopefully this film is even better than The Dark Knight so I can continue my admiration for the work of Christopher Nolan without second guessing every little piece of "Batman 3"
