In 2008, the original London location of Hakkasan was rated the 18th best restaurant in the world. Given this accolade, among many others, perhaps it comes as no surprise that the chain is expanding. Hakkasan plans to open locations in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas by the end of next year. This upscale Chinese food chain currently has locations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Mumbai and India, in addition to two locations in London.
Richard Vines of Bloomberg News explains the chain's concept and history:
Hakkasan is known for stylish restaurants, with staff members dressed in designer outfits serving mainly Asian-themed cocktails and Chinese dishes with fine ingredients and high price tags. It was founded by Alan Yau, who created Wagamama, and purchased four years ago by Abu Dhabi-based Tasameem group.
The Miami location of Hakkasan -- currently the only U.S. outpost -- is generally regarded as quite tasty but obscenely expensive. Hot & sour soup is priced at about $16 and Peking duck with osetra caviar will set you back almost $200.
Based on this semi-rapid expansion, Hakkasan's investors must hope that the recession really is over.
