'Monumental Interactive Smiley' Installation Projects City's Emotional State (VIDEO)

WATCH: Giant, Changing Emoticon Tells City's Mood

Are you constantly bombarded by unwanted emoticons in your texts and emails? Are you starting to think in terms of happy face versus sad face? Well, it looks like the worldwide takeover of the emoticon is just beginning, according to a new art installation of a monumental interactive smiley. The project, called the Stimmungsgasometer, is made by Richard Wilhelmer, Julius von Bismarck and Benjamin Maus to gauge and project the emotional state of an entire city.

The project consists of sophisticated software designed by the Fraunhofer Institut that processes random faces of city dwellers and categorizes them as happy, sad or indifferent. The current emotional state is then projected in real-time onto a giant smiley screen. Mechanical armatures then adjust the smiley accordingly (as smile, frown or blank.) The installation was first installed on top of a Berlin lighthouse but hopefully will be on the move soon!

This makes us very :).
