Pew Research Poll: Anti-Incumbent Fever Could Hurt Republicans

First Posted: 12/15/2011 8:34 am Updated: 12/15/2011 12:17 pm

Results from a new national survey from the Pew Research Center should strike fear into the hearts of incumbents in Congress, especially those who are members of the Republican Party. A record number of respondents want to vote sitting lawmakers out of office, and Republicans take more of the blame than Democrats for perceptions of a do-nothing Congress.

According to the Pew Research report, two-thirds (67 percent) of registered voters nationwide say "most members of Congress" should be voted out of office in 2012, while only 20 percent want most members reelected. This desire to fire all incumbents marks a record level of discontent since the Pew Center started asking the question 18 years ago, far exceeding previous highs of 57 percent in 2010 and 56 percent in 1994.

The survey also finds that only 50 percent of voters want their own representative reelected, while the number who want their member replaced (33 percent) matches an all time high recorded in 2010 when, as their report notes, "fully 58 members of Congress lost reelection bids -- the most in any election since 1948."

The finding of record-high discontent with Congress is not unique to this latest Pew Research survey. Gallup recently found a record high number of voters saying that most members of Congress do not deserve reelection (76 percent) and rating the honesty and ethics of members of Congress as "low" or "very low" (64 percent). National surveys conducted in recent months by Gallup, CBS News/New York Times, ABC News/Washington Post, Fox News and AP/GfK all show approval ratings of Congress at or near record low levels.

The discontent stems partly from economic pessimism; nine out of ten adults in the new Pew Research survey say the economy is in only fair (38 percent) or poor (53) condition and only 28 percent expect it to get better. It is also linked to the perception of a do-nothing Congress. A record high 50 percent of voters say the current Congress has accomplished less than others in recent memory -- that's more than previous highs of 43 percent in 2006 and 2007.

The Pew Research poll finds that those who say Congress has done less lately are more likely to blame Republicans for the inaction (40 percent) than Democrats (23 percent). Majorities of all adults view the Republican Party as more extreme in its positions and less willing to work with the other side, and pluralities now view the Democrats as more honest and ethical and better able to manage the government.

Voters are critical of the leadership of both parties in Congress, but the Republican leaders receive lower job approval ratings (21 percent) than the Democratic leaders (31 percent). The report notes that "a good deal of this criticism is coming from within the GOP base." Nearly half of Republicans (44 percent) disapprove of the Republican leadership, and 70 percent of Republicans want to see most members of Congress replaced (compared to 60 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of independents).

The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press interviewed 1,521 randomly selected adults nationwide (including 1,211 registered voters) by telephone using live interviewers. The sample included both landline and mobile telephone numbers. The reported margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for both adults and registered voters.

My Wish List for what is left of America

1. Reinstate Glass Steagel, with stronger protections for people. Re-separate investment banking and commercial banking.

2. Reverse Citizens United. As established in the 13th Amendment, people can’t own people, therefore corporations, which people may own, are not people. The people who work in corporations have the right to free speech, assembly,  Read More...

Voters are ready to let democrats take back the House if they will STAY populist, pragmatic, and explain things. It's really not that complicated!

I don't know how that one will work if they are to win, but it's very doable. Right now, it looks like the public is just sick to death of inaction. We're heading for a second-term for Obama, and a potential Democrat-led House...it's time to move on from the conservative ideals. America has spoken that thus far.

How the Republican party ever co-opted the "conservative" moniker is one of the great mysteries of life. Most of the 15 TRILLION ntl debt was rung up under GOP presidents and the only thing they are "conservative " about is conserving and increasing the wealth of their benefactors

Let us ask what have the House Republicans done? We should vote against their block and do nothing attitude. Republicans need to wake up and vote Republicans out of office to save the party.

I have a good mind to vote republican in the next election just to watch all the conservatives get what they deserve!

. I think the tea party killed the republican party ,,Not all Republican are bad just Like Dems,But This party is mixed with a lot of hate they act more like Reticule than people who have no understanding what's best for America, People worry about the Rich paying more in taxes ,But Who really pays the taxes. If we keep giving the rich tax breaks all they do in turn around and create jobs overseas ,Taxes should breaks should be given only to people who create jobs in this country for people who live in America ,this needs to be more defined by republicans as a whole ,As far as any Republican for President goes ,People should start looking at Romney record in MA,his health Care Plan and the reckless spending on the Big Dig cost billions more ,Which in turn raised the rates on all fees, No matter how you look at it it's still a tax's increase .It took a hard 3 years for the citizens ob MA to make a come back and ha the lowest employment rate in the country
As I also blame the speaker of congress as well as the President ,I don't think any of these leaders should be reelected ,The Senate did their job thumbs up Even though Scott Brown wont be reelected this fall He has failed the people of this state and all polls show him down by 7 to 12 points

It has been a "do nothing" congress since the last midterm election. Yes there is the gridlock. Much better than what immediatly preceded. I am dissapointed that we are not progressing as the country should. All-in-all, 'doing nothing' has been a great change in direction as we certainly were headed in the wrong direction till the midterm election enabled the breaks to be put on. We still need changes like term limits, spending limits as the most important. Wish us luck in 2012 election.

I believe the top three contenders now will be Romney..Paul and Huntsman. Paul and Huntsman will go at it with Romney. I really expect a strong Huntsman surge..he's just sitting back but he's starting to show signs..it's still a long way to go.

With numbers like that, not only will Democrats take the House, They may well pick up a seat or two in the Senate. Even though Democrats have more seats up for grabs in the Senate. Of course, this could change by election day.

Since WHEN is this news? The sad part is that the gop/teapublicans/wingers could care less about what any polls say - even though it is the ONLY way for them to measure their job performances.

The gopers/teapublicans/wingers thinks that all they have to do is be well funded by BIG business and do their biddings. They've lost sight of the fact that now that those "little" Americans understands who ACTUALLY elects them in office, and who they openly fights for, that this gimmick will no longer work for them.

The day of reckoning is upon ALL ELECTED politicians - ACROSS THE BOARD - come election/re-elections times.... and it's NOT going to be a pretty sight.

And if that drop of rain is wholly imaginary and results simply from wishful thinking...what then? I really don't expect an answer...you guys are so convinced of the inevitability of your triumph you'll grasp at every straw to prove your point. The point will be proven on Nov. 2, 2012.

People talk a good game, but I have serious doubts about their frustrations and anger translating into votes against their incumbents. In the final analysis it seems that people fall back into the trap that the problems lay with other elected officials and not with theirs. However, since the only officials over which they have any influence are the ones that THEY vote for, their incumbents tend feel secure in their seats. In the past even when there is a turnover of control from one party to the other there is generally no earth shaking change where incumbents are voted out in large numbers.

We'll see if talk really is cheap.

I am a registered Republican (but not for long now). I will NEVER vote for another Republican. NEVER.

I don't have "anti-incumbent fever". I have palpable disdain & disgust for those who throw America under the bus in a blatant power grab time after time after time.

When the GOP began putting party first in from of country, ever since January of 2009, when Obama took office, I find it tough for them to call themselves, patriots.
I would hope more Republican voters begin to see what you see.
12:05 AM on 12/21/2011
The Dems have been doing a good job of putting party before country themselves. They also have been lining their pockets too. Voters of both parties have to take a long, hard look at there people and decide to keep thing s as is and watch the destruction of America , or stand up for this country and do the right thing..
