Golden Globes 2012: Boomers Dominate Nominations

First Posted: 12/15/11 12:38 PM ET   Updated: 01/13/12 02:23 PM ET

While Hollywood tends to celebrate youth, the Golden Globe nominations announced today may signal a new era for older actors in film and television. The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards nominees were announced this morning in Los Angeles by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and the list is dominated by baby boomers.

Four of the five best actress nominees are in the boomer demographic, including Glenn Close for 'Albert Nobbs'; Viola Davis for 'The Help'; Meryl Streep for 'The Iron Lady'; and Tilda Swinton for 'We Need To Talk About Kevin.' In addition, Jodi Foster was nominated for best supporting actress in a comedy for 'Carnage.' While George Clooney was the only 50-year-old in the best actor category, four of the five best supporting actors are in the 50+ demo, including Kenneth Branagh for 'My Week With Marilyn'; Albert Brooks for 'Drive'; Viggo Mortensen for 'A Dangerous Method'; and Christopher Plummer for 'Beginners.'

Check out our slideshow and vote for your favorite Boomer actor. You can view the full list of nominees here.

Yes! This is exactly what I wrote about in RIPE: Rich, Rewarding Work After 50. In fact, one of my earliest pieces for HuffPost about RIPE was about how the Oscars are trending in the same direction. And it's not just for the rich and famous, kids! We can all ripen. Check out my HuffPost series, my site, and my book for more. Who knew it was gonna be cool to be over 50???

Both salubrious and lugubrious concurrently.

The author apparently doesn't know what a 'Boomer' is. The word refers to the baby boom that happened after the end of WWII. George Clooney is not a Baby Boomer. He missed by ten years. Tilda Swynton is only 51. Boomers have reached 65! Ironically, I just now spot above this story the headline to another story "So you think you're a baby boomer? Think again" which makes the same point as me.

I don't think Woody Allen and Christopher Plummer are technically baby boomers, but what the heck, I'm so glad they were nominated!

I like the actors that have been nominated and have enjoyed watching them in flicks this year. I'd like to point though that some of these actors/actresses are not Baby Boomers; they belong to Generation Jones.

The Hollywood Foreign Press has proven, once again, that all they want to do is nominate attractive people that they hope will 'go to disco' with them. It is a joke organization and should be given absolutely no credibility.

Buscemi is a great actor to be sure, but his character on BE is not at all dynamic. He has no range and remains as static as he was on the first day of the show. Nucky gets mad? Same expression. Nucky gets sad? Same expression. Nucky gets horny? Same expression. At least Tony Soprano could rise to the occasion and deliver some truly emotional moments. That's why they killed off Jimmy Darmody. He was overshadowing Buscemi and making him look wooden and uninspired. Now there's no reason to watch Boardwalk Empire.
