Light Saber Attack: Oregon Man David Canterbury Assaults Toys 'R' Us Shoppers With 'Star Wars' Sword

That's not how you use the force!

An Oregon man went Darth Vader on customers at Toys 'R' Us this week when he allegedly assaulted at least three people by wielding a toy light saber.

Police arrested 33-year-old David Allen Canterbury -- Jedi-in-training -- after a shopper at the Jantzen Beach store called 9-1-1 to report Canterbury's evil use of the force around 9:50 p.m., Wednesday night, The Oregonian reports.

The caller told authorities that the man inside the store, later identified as Canterbury, was swinging the "Star Wars" toy at customers, The Portland Tribune reports.

When police approached Canterbury in the parking lot, they attempted to subdue the suspect using Tasers, according to Fox-12. Canterbury, however, continued to swing the light saber, knocking away one of the Taser wires with the toy weapon.

Canterbury is charged with assault, disorderly conduct, theft, resisting arrest, and interfering with a police officer.

"Interfering with a police officer", I assume for stopping the tazer?! While this guy obviously needed to be arrested and taken to get mental help, it still annoys me that cops always have to give BS charges to people on top of the ones they earned. Even when the cops are in the right, they manage to be jerks by adding insult to injury.

Let me tell you, I know 1st hand how bad it sucks to have to take a plea agreement for charges I wasn't guilty of, just so I didn't get convicted of multiple made up crimes I wasn't guilty of, and it freaking sucks. Most cops are sociopaths. Who else would intentionally ruin hundreds of lives just to advance their career?

In Portland, it's par for the course
To see the policemen enforce
The lightsaber laws.
Transgression is cause
To take the offenders by Force.

Did this man really hurt anybody? or was he just playing and it went a little too far? He may have been trying to lighten the mood of some uptight shoppers that needed to laugh and he thought he was doing them a favor by trying to make them laugh. Or maybe he really had an issue, and needed help...maybe "the force" was calling him. My son loved Star Wars, even as an adult, I bet if he and his friends thought people wouldn't look at them funny they would go into a toys r us and play with the light sabers too. They have a lot more effects than they used to. What color was it? What side of the force was he on, and why are they so taser happy these days? I worked a psych floor and have watched people catch birds all night and put them in cages, work on cars that were under beds, talk to movie stars that were sitting in the corner, and if you talk to them instead of trying to demand they comply, they often times respond better. If I wasn't thinking straight and somebody was trying to shoot me with a taser, I'd probably hit them with a stick too...that would hurt. Oh well...guess we need to call Yoda!!! Have a great night everybody!!!

This is terrible. This man was probably just playing around at first and some uptight and humorless person made it escalade into what happened. Sad. Sometimes, people with the best intentions have the worst of luck.

Read the charges, Theft means he stole something. Everyone knows that you build your own lightsaber. Duh! Your first one may be a gift but a true Jedi will build the perfect one.
