Marion Barry Taxes: IRS Files Federal Tax Lien Against Former Mayor

Marion Barry Is In Tax Trouble.. Again

WASHINGTON -- The Internal Revenue Service has filed a notice of a federal tax lien against District of Columbia Councilmember Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) for failure to pay $3,267.29 in taxes from 2010.

As The Washington Times reports:

The filing comes less than two years after federal tax collectors filed a separate lien notice against the Ward 8 Democrat and former mayor, citing more than $15,000 in unpaid taxes from 2005 to 2008.

Neither of those tax notices is related to a guilty plea by Mr. Barry in 2005 in a misdemeanor tax case that involved unpaid taxes on more than $500,000 in income from 1999 to 2004.

Over the course of Barry's tax drama, prosecutors have pressed U.S. District Magistrate Judge Deborah Robinson to jail the former mayor for probation violations related to his lack of tax compliance. Barry, however, has not faced any jail time. Instead, his three-year probation was extended in 2009 when he failed to file a tax returns for 2007.

As The Washington Post reports, "it appears Barry has failed to file a return or pay his income tax in full for nine of the past 12 tax years."

Barry is running for re-election next year to his Ward 8 seat on the D.C. Council. Then-Mayor Marion Barry served a six-month jail sentence after his 1990 arrest for use and possession of illegal drugs during a sting operation at a downtown D.C. hotel.
